Nightmares and such are what german morbide romanticism is all about, so it's really OK to look like one.. ;) Insanity, despair, longing, illness, short moments of luck and finally death and peace. If you listen with your heart, you will hear all of that in Liszt's or Reubke's music. :)
@JPBerger71 I believe Beethoven started to make Romantic Piano Sonatas close to the end of his life. Because he was born during the Classical Period and died during the early years of the Romantic Period. His later piano sonatas are Romantic.
Reubke sometimes reminds of Rachmaninov (melody organization, harmony), but, surely, 80 % of this marvellous 'gemme aux multiples facettes' feels Liszt's influence.
I wonder if Liszt's pupils tried to establish contact with genial Alkan to confer on rich chords, trans-octave leaps and the usage of cross-hand mid-voice polyphony..?
Reubke wrote also a very famous Organ Sonata which is also very difficult and a total masterpiece, one of the most beautiful pieces in organ repertoire. What a genious..

Definitely a big virtuoso piece, but it has very little melodic invention. So to speak, it is more for the pianist. A music lover can't gain much from it.
it's incredible, what an amazing piece...I read in a web that this sonate was composed inspired by the liszt sonate in B minor, but definitely this is much deeper and difficult...I can't believe that I had never heard nothing about this composer! Thanks for posting magnificents pieces like this
I am glad that someone else shares my same opinion. This piece is absolutely beautiful and I had never heard of it until today. This is a much "deeper" work than Liszt Sonata. I like a lot of works by Liszt but Liszt is boring to me at times. I can hear the influencs of Liszt but there is a fresh originality to this sonata. This needs to be included in the standard reportoire.
Who is the pianist?

He had quite a Melodic gift, some people don't hear it, but he definitely had it, and its quite original.

He Out-Brahms, Brahms,
Johannes never wrote this good or imaginative; too much time at brothels in Hamburg

Reubke had great potential, too bad God decided it was his time when he was so young.

Almost scriabinian by moments ! I thought it was composed around 1890 when I realized that Reubke died almost 40 years before ...

My favorite part of this piece is the octave theme at the Presto (tritones are LEGENDARY!) as well as this composer. Thank you Hexameron!

Too bad he died before we could have gotten a piano concerto out of him. I bet it would have been a monster to play! :-)

Just fantastic, I love this piece. Thanks for posting it. I'm always interested to hear music by students of Liszt.

Magnificent. It's fustrating that Reubke died so young.
Many thanks for all your posts of these less well known composers.
