Purgatory, the real men murder story! What is really ment by this is that Christianity is upside down, just like 999 is 666 upside down, there is a reason why 999 is chosen, theres a reason why the obelisk in U.S is 666feet under ground, Religion is bullshit, Christianity is really Satanic. Now, come forth my sons of sinners, cus i shall now quench my thirst by eating your soul.
The only way you end in purgatory is if you were not saved by the blood of Jesus. When you leave this life and are not saved you will remain in spirit with demons for your keeper. You have a certain time to be cast to hell, you do not automatically go there. You will wonder the earth until that time. Then and only then will you be put there. Your next stop is the lake of pain at the Great White Throne Judgement Seat.. This is the truth Satan does not want you to know.
good point on that. What this guy has done was reject the MISunderstanding of the teaching of purgatory that says "God is getting even with us or that we have not been forgiven through JC." Instead he's clarifying that purgatory is taught as an afterlife existence in which we Christians realize God's justice. We are not subjected to fire as punishment but for purification. Even after we are forgiven by God - when we ask with a sincere, contrite heart - we are not perfect for heaven.
And why doesn't Dr. Boyd give the actual CONTEXT of 1Cor.3? The context of this passage is that it is speaking about ELDERS in the ministry of the Word. Therefore, v.13 is referring to the TEACHINGS those Elders have promulgated to believers.
In essence, then, believers should take heed to what they are being taught by their Elders (Pastors), and check every teaching with the light of God's Word ;)
Dr. Boyd: "We'll be rewarded and/or punished based on our faithfulness".
This is patently FALSE! The apostle says, "blessed is the man to whom God will not impute sin" (Rom.4:8). Therefore, the ones punished are punished because of their sin. Those not punished, are not punished because their punishment has already been executed upon the Messiah on the cross.
Justification= our sin imputed to Christ; His righteousness imputed to His people.
Ro: 8:6: For to be (flesh) carnally minded is DEATH; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Ro: 8:9: But ye are NOT in the FLESH, but in the SPIRIT, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man has not the SPIRIT of Christ, he is none of his. Ro: 8:13: For IF YE LIVE after the flesh, ye shall DIE: but if ye through the Spirit do MORTIFY the deeds of the body, ye shall live. NOW IS THE TIME OF SALVATION,
YOUR PROBLEM IS THE IMORTAL SOUL IT’S A LIE. Like purgatory.
The doctrine of Purgatory is a false Gospel, which presumes that prayers PURCHASED from the church by the living, can somehow balance the "merits" (good works) of long dead "saints" against the sins of the unforgiven dead, to atone for them! This iniquitous invention of the Devil, offers a deliverance from the penalty of sin, which is not based on true repentance and which is not taught anywhere in the Bible.
Purgatory is a man-made money-making thing invented by the unbiblical rcc.Heb1:3 "When He had by Himself PURGED OUR SINS.".Rom8:1 "There is therefor now NO CONDEMNATION to them that are in Christ Jesus.". Psalms49:7 "None of them can redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.".Dont forget Prov10:12 which never mentions purgatory. Acts4:12"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Bless you for being wise enough to know about temporal punishment. Please come to the original church of Peter.. the one, true holy Roman Catholic Church.
Listen, we are PURGED OF OUR SINS ( not some, ALL ) by the blood of Jesus Christ. Heb1:3,Rom8:1 and John5:24. Remember "there is no more condemnation when Jesus passed over our sins and paid the ultimate penalty for us." Why didnt the apostles ever discuss purgatory? 2Cor5:8There is no mention of pur. here. In Luke16:19-31, Jesus reveals there is a great gulf between hell and paradise that ...
To those who say Greg is denying and then affirming purgatory, I simply say that he is denying what he describes as the common belief that purgatory was a mini hell. I don't know what the Pope may have said recently, but that is not what Greg seems to be arguing. Not trying to offend, just trying to clarify my understanding of what Greg is saying. :)
I would also like to mention, that most protestants understand that there is a place before heaven. Paradise for those that await the moment of heavens readiness, and Hades for those who await hell. As Jesus told the thief on the cross "today you will be with me in paradise" Not heaven, not purgatory, but paradise.
All this speculation about post-life existence ... it's sad. There are at least three vastly different versions of post-life existence, acquired from different interpretations of the Bible: Catholic, Protestant & LDS.
Bottom Line: these are the opinions of MEN, not god.
@Xenophile665 Yes perfect lets help people right now, follow Christ and be Christ like :) Lets stop worring about the afterlife we know barely anything about!
Sorry, Greg, but you are as September Catholic has stated, giving the mose clear and concise definition on Catholic purpgatory I have ever heard. It goes right along with the most recent definition as given by Pope John-Paul in 2000 when he denied the age-old belief in a purgatory of hellfire and brimstone, but rather one in which the believer, stained with sin is merely purified and sactified in perhaps a moment by the love of Christ. I am a former Lutheran, now Catholic.
I find it funny that he claims he is not defending purgatory, but then goes on to give one of the best explanations of purgatory I have ever heard. We have to call a duck a duck, guys. He is defending purgatory, as reluctant as he is to admit it.
However, I enjoyed it very much because it gives me hope that Protestants and Catholics can come to agreement here. And for the record, the indulgence abuses were condemned by the Church and later a pope retracted all pseudo-indulgences sold.

This is nuts I can't believe you guys believe in Purgatory. Purgatory implies that the blood of Christ was not sufficient to cover the sins of man and cleanse them. I hope you all think for a long time about what you are buying into before you agree with the notion of Purgatory.
then you heard Boyd deny he's advocating a belief in Purgatory, only to state that he's advocating a belief in purgatory. What do you call that, if not "paying attention".
And how, too, do you explain the detailed scriptures Boyd cites, that appear to describe a refining?
And how do you explain 3/4 of Church history that contained that teaching? Where Jesus said the gates of hell would not prevail against it?
I'm not ready to believe in Purgatory, either, but these scriptures disturb me...
I didn't use to believe in purgatory, but I can kinda feel where Greg is coming from, the more I prayed and read Scripture and looked at church history, it seemed quite obvious that there must be some sort of purification for the elect before they enter heaven, if need be. However because I could handle being told that I had been deceived by "romanism" I didn't do anything about it.
If you listen to what he's saying in the clip, you will understand better what he is trying to teach. He specifically says, " I am in NO WAY reintroducing the concept of purgatory" The teaching of purgatory as we think of it, is not Biblical, however, much of our ideas in the American Christian church regarding heaven and hell are based on very Greek/Hellenistic ideas that are also not Biblical.
I don't know if I agree, I think in one sense he is affirming purgatory but in the other sense he is denying it, as he seems to know that he could get accused of being too Catholic in his thinking.
@reformedjames I think he has not forgotten his Roman Catholic background and is gravely mistaken. The reason the Reformers threw the out the doctrine of Purgatory is because of their correct understanding of the atonement. Christ's atonement stands complete in that there is nothing left to be done here in this world or in the world to come. Boyd's theology has undoubtedly its roots in Roman Catholicism and its faulty understanding of atonement.
lamfreeryou Catholics don't have a monopoly on things like purgatory. Many Protestants for example believe contraception is evil, but it doesn't make them Catholic. I don't think we should get caught up on the name purgatory, as even Greek Orthodox seem to believe in some similar concept without using the term 'purgatory'. I think there must be some sort of purging that must take place before the elect face a Holy God.
@reformedjames I don't believe the purging would take that long. I'm not well-learned in theology, but somewhere in the New Testament there is a passage describing an apostle meeting God in a vision. He said (and I paraphrase) "Woe is me for I have seen the Holy God in unclean form!" an angel then came and pressed a hot ember to his lips and said (paraphrase) "You have been purged of your iniquities." I'm not sure whether this ember is purging our character or a symbol of Christ redeeming us
There are lots of verses that speak of punishment for saved people: like being beaten with "many" or "few blows" (Luke 12:47-48).
2 Corinthians 5:9-11:
(9) So we make it our goal to please him...
(10) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
(11) Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men.
I think he is right in certain respects too...If you compare some of things he is saying they are very similar to what the Catholic Church teaches. I think Protestant pastors do a great disservice when they teach us that Christ doesn't punish the "saved". I think there must be must be a middle state so to speak between heaven and hell, where a Holy God purifies his elect bound for heaven to see Him face to face.
