Goth is about questioning and seeing the faultiness of modern society. This may seem very pesimistic to others who aren't goth, but gothic people want to tear loose from all things that bind normal people to their society to the greatest extent possible. It is actually also a very beautiful thing. When people see goths having their food or a festival on the graveyard, it is not because we want to be closer to the dead, but because we want to learn more about the history of a place. yeah theres plenty of new goth bands or old bands still touring i live in the la area and there are actual goth clubs that play nothing but 80's goth, darkwave and electro goth/ebm none of this metal bs. some examples of new bands are autumns grey solace(they have two videos on youtube check em out) ashbury heights, svenia, emily autumn

hi, i am a TOTAL outsider to goth culture. i literally looked up goth videos out of curiosity. i have a hobby of investigating different aspects of world culture and i really want to understand more about the goth lifestyle. my last interest was paganism and wiccan religion earlier, and although i learned alot, i know these two things are only thinly related. if anyone would like to help me understand what goth is all about, please comment or message me. i want to learn about all i can.
Wiccan religion and Paganism have absolutely nothing to do with goth, for a start lets make it clear that goth has no preference for any religion, it's all about music and attitude.
It started in the 80's and opposed to what most people think goth isn't about being depressed, it's about having fun and being a little bit crazy, very few have the attitude and preferences that link goth people together, no one can teach you how to be a goth, you just are and that's it.

Learn about the attitude that originated from the 80's goth music, then you will understand what goth is, it's about being different and not caring, it's about being feminine too, it's about being a little bit twisted too, it was about being loud and fun, we have a different way of thinking, fashion is of utmost importance too.
I think it was once about music, but it has grown into something more. It orignated from punk, but has expanded itself over the years. Goth is about art, style, self expression, a way of thinking, as much as it is about the music. Every culture and subculture changes or grows over time, it is natural and sometimes we should embrace it and sometimes we shouldn't, but it seems ignorant or naive to remain blind to it... We are each to our own belief, but I am not the only one that feels this way.
The bands playing are not strictly gothic bands, but who cares. The dialogue is great. Only a punter would be overly concerned with the music choice over a lifestyle choice.
It is not a any point about being strictly goth. None of theses bands are even loosely related to goth music.
And the goth movement is a musical movement. Those who says it is a lifestyle choice are usually poseurs that listen to metal and don't know anything about post-punk, coldwave, death-rock, ...

gothic metal was formed from a combination of classical music and death metal, the vision of a monster tormenting a maiden is very common in opera so they just took that and applied it.

No, actually it got it's name from some fab reporter who decided the music was based on the literature. Early, first wave, actual goth music has little to do with gothic literature. Most of it, similar to the punk genre it had just blossomed from, was political, some a commontary on religion, and others tounge-in-cheek style horror
i think Type O Negative or Paradise Lost will be better than Lacuna Coil or Evanescence, as a Gothic example...

Well, the gothic ideology is about as varied as punk, but there are commonalities, Nhilism, Neoromantisim, introspection, skepicsim, cynicism, individualism (some interests are morbid but thats not a nessacary requirement), seeing things for the way they are and not being afraid to say it, and being yourself no matter what. you dont have to be interested in the macabre, but the message is that its okay so long as its your interest, like punk its about pure authenticity. yeah theres plenty of new goth bands or old bands still touring i live in the la area and there are actual goth clubs that play nothing but 80's goth, darkwave and electro goth/ebm none of this metal bs. some examples of new bands are autumns grey solace(they have two videos on youtube check em out) ashbury heights, svenia, emily autumn

I think it was once about music, but it has grown into something more. It orignated from punk, but has expanded itself over the years. Goth is about art, style, self expression, a way of thinking, as much as it is about the music. Every culture and subculture changes or grows over time, it is natural and sometimes we should embrace it and sometimes we shouldn't, but it seems ignorant or naive to remain blind to it... We are each to our own belief, but I am not the only one that feels this way.

The Gothic Metal genre is a mix of death/doom metal and opera and symphonic elements
the "beauty and the beast" style is directly taken from opera, not GOTH.
goth is an offshoot of post-punk
starting with bands like Joy Division Bauhaus and SOM.
it sounds totally different: The "Goth" in Gothic Metal is just a term. It doesnt denote any relation, just like Death Metal has no relation to Deathrock.
i dont use the term Gothic Metal instead i call it Symphonic Metal. Too avoid confusion.

gothic metal was formed from a combination of classical music and death metal, the vision of a monster tormenting a maiden is very common in opera so they just took that and applied it.

No, actually it got it's name from some fab reporter who decided the music was based on the literature. Early, first wave, actual goth music has little to do with gothic literature. Most of it, similar to the punk genre it had just blossomed from, was political, some a commontary on religion, and others tounge-in-cheek style horror

Well, the gothic ideology is about as varied as punk, but there are commonalities, Nhilism, Neoromantisim, introspection, skepicsim, cynicism, individualism (some interests are morbid but thats not a nessacary requirement), seeing things for the way they are and not being afraid to say it, and being yourself no matter what. you dont have to be interested in the macabre, but the message is that its okay so long as its your interest, like punk its about pure authenticity. i am a goth, and would prefer that peopel made documentaries that helped peopel understand us and not turn against ys. we are only humans like everyone eltse.
btw... goth doesnt stand for gothis music at all, that is just one part of what makes us who we are.
