Well in an historical point of view Islam prohibits idolatry because it inherits a lot of the Judaic culture (as Christianity also does btw), where idolatry is also prohibited. Another example is the prohibition of pork, but there are more. Getting offended is one thing, threatening to kill people is a another. Here in Europe, freedom of speech and religion don't mix, if Muslims don't like it, that's their problem. Religion is to be kept separated from law and law assures freedom of speech.
