Fifth Gear ABS, TC, ESP Full version

So it went uphill with TC on, but that was with a front wheel drive car. Would the car be able to make it up an ice hill with NO TC, but all wheel drive? Also.... who drives on massive ice plates at 70MPH? Although this was interesting, I would have loved to see a more realistic test as well... such as a 30MPH-60MPH ESP test, both with and without all wheel drive.

So yeah, my main question is, does all wheel drive or 4WD make any difference in these situations?

Thats Bulshit, when he has esp off, you can see he makes no attempt to turn counter clockwise to avoid it until its too late to recover, where as when he puts esp on he is less vicious with the wheel as before and turns counter clockwise much earlier, same with the hill start. he makes it seem you can drive straight up with no problem. Fake Test.

most drivers don't even know the basics of car control(that's where esp comes in) i am sure that tiff, in the situation, could maintain the vehicle and prevent an accident without esp.

This is what I liked about Fifth Gear, it provided useful information. People spent too much time trying to compare it with Top Gear. It was never meant to compete, at least not directly. Fifth gear was intended to be more educational, due to being more informative. On the other hand, Top Gear is aimed at providing more of an entertainment value.

I dont agree with the react better than a human can, I have never had ABS, traction Control or ESP on any vehicle and yet I manage to stay in control no matter the weather. I say it depends on the driver, with how violently he was turning while driving on ice then yes you will go into a skid, its called pay attention and know how you vehicle behaves in a given situation. practice practice practice.

it's just a camera effect, when the car comes up u can hear the enginge getting moure trouble, and when it comes off the slope, you can see it better. what they do to cheat, they make the car come with a considerable speed, in which you don't even need to accelerate.

These are all good things to have, but they should be optional on low priced cars. They should also have defeat switches. Here in the USA, GM put cheap ABS on the J-cars (Cavalier) in the early '90s and it wasn't good. Friends of mine complained that the car would never quite stop on an icy hill. I've ALWAYS been impressed with the Bosch systems, and they tend to cost more.

I can tell you ABS and the newer electronic systems have saved thousands of lives.

Its about being able to control the car in extreme (and always) surprising situations.

All this proves is that ABS takes LONGER to stop you! How can people be to stupid as to only see one side of things?! Watch from 4:18 to 4:21. The car takes 3 seconds to stop without abs. But if you watch from 4:30 to 4:35, it takes 2 seconds LONGER to stop with ABS! And this is meant to mean it's better simply because it is more controlled?! You can gain that control yourself simply from using stratejic and well timed stomps on the brakes (the cadence braking technique as it is known)

LOL - You are funny. Speak for yourself, but FYI, I have almost 100,000 miles driving experience, have driven on every single one of the 68 motorways in GB, have driven my own vehicle at a speed of 156mph, have even driven abroad, and just 2 weeks ago drove half the distance from the UK to the USA in a single road trip! So i think i am a lot more qualified than you to know what i am talking about! ;-). That aside, the laws of physics, common sense and the blindingly obvious speak for themselves!

100,000 miles = experienced driver ? I didn't mean to offend you, but those qualifications do not make you an expert. All electronic systems are to help. ESP and ABS are annoying on the track, but in winter or rain it gives more comfort to a driver.

Ps. I've got a pro dirver's license and rally lic. , I don't claim you're a bad driver, but with small experience of extreme road situations

by the way - this test of ESP is biased - driver's reaction while ESP off is much slower than at second attemp with ESP on. As I said - all systems are suppose to help less experienced drivers, but no electronic device can save retarded driver...

ESP, VSC, and Traction Control works great in certain circumstances. However if your in snow and trying to go up a hill that system will actually stop you from moving as it applies the brakes and cuts power you won't go anywhere.
