WOW i really liked this pass done it for years but never thought about how they crossed their legs and how you can break the ankles apart like this. This video is great Thanks!!
When I open the guard the opponent is often bending the leg I am grabbing and putting his foot on the floor to escape his hips and kill my pass or attempt an attack. What am I doing wrong? Am I not putting enough weight on his thigh? FYI, this pass is my "move to do" this month while rolling.
ive been working on this pass and have had mixed results. with the bigger guys, they tend to get my back more often. is it cause i am not killing the hips?
btw, i love your teaching style, very detailed and step by step.
Marcelo Garcia does a similar pass on one of his instructionals, but he wraps the underhook arm under and around his opponent's hips. I have tried the Marcelo pass during sparring and was never caught by any subs, but I always had problems opening the legs so I gave up on the pass. What you show to solve that problem is pure genius. I'll definitely be giving this pass a go. Thanks for posting.
Marcelo sits out in the middle of his opponents guard if i remember correctly... rather than trying to "kill the hips" and force the guard to open he puts himself in what seems a bad spot and draws the triangle attempt. Its more a feint than a guard break.
The MMA question is beyond my scope but on the BJJ questions I can say that with the hips trapped he won't be taking your back, or gi choking you. Not while you're sitting through in that odd angle. As long as you keep the weight down he';s not doing anything. If I were on bottom i would stitch to open guard as soon as my hips were trapped that way, but this is a pass to pass a closed guard which can be stubborn depending on the opp.
i see someone taking alot of punches if they use this pass for MMA. Not saying it wouldn't work, but with the underhook and ankle grab, hes got two free hands and you've got none.
i don't see any danger from an omoplata here , if you keep control of his right leg all the time he can't rotate his hips all the way to an omoplata position , and even if he holds his left leg in a rubber guard position , you still have his right leg controled and can put it down and finish the pass .
great vid and i appreciate the level of detail and the very comprehensible teaching style. all that said, i would be very concerned about giving up a great rubber guard position or a direct to omo plata position. given that you mention in the description never giving the omo up because of this pass, how do you counteract it ?
I'm hesitant to criticize this, but as some other people have noted it just seems to leave the passer wide open for an omoplata or what Bravo calls the "carni". Even when I have my hips killed, I'm flexible enough to swing my free leg over and stick my shin in the passer's throat. Am I missing something?
If you stay high enough on his chest (deep underhook), keep your head low enough and your hips heavy enough, getting the omoplata will be very difficult.
Nope not at all. You have to move fast when doing it. If the threat of an omoplata appears, you give up and start over. It basically also says that in the description.
@chimchimgarcia GEEEEEEEZ two videos for this pass!!!!!! Spit it out already, damn. But for real, a good Rubber guard guy, or a Ryan Hall kinda guy and they are gonna kill you for that tryin that pass.
its the schools mascot.. you can only get the shirt from the school. We are based in the bronx,ny and yonkers, ny. There are a few other jungle gym affiliated schools but i'm not sure of the locations.
seems like you relieve some weight and make space when you pop up to the knee and work the hook over? i've been trying to do it wallid style where you keep the hips down and tight and slide walk the legs toward north south. great stuff. thanks. very detailed. the leg break info was sweet.
The control you acquire with your grip of his leg more than compensates for the elevation of your hips. The Wallid version you're referring to has many holes in a no-gi/mma scenario, but who am I to argue with his success using it with the gi!?
Man, I am absolutely loving this pass. Thanks. One thing though. The higher belts, after being passed once, start using their free arm (the one thats not underhooked) to push my head and clear my weight from my chest. Any advice for that counter?
Bob, I'd say the biggest obstacle folks have in the beginning is bailing on the pass when the "waters get rough". As with any tech, there will always be a counter, but with two legit techniques, it's the one with the better execution that usually wins over. You'll notice that in the description I mention that I've never been oma plata'd, mostly due to me resetting when necessary, and accelerating throught the pass when able.

I'll try this for sure. Thanks for the small details especially. I know a couple of guard wizards who will hate this pass (hopefully).

The guy down has two free hands. With his right hand he can punch your face at will, if it's MMA.
If it's Bjj with gi, he will try to choke U with Ur own gi. I also think he can turn to get Ur back.

the hardest strikes a guy from the bottom can deliver would land on the back of the head , so if it's mma that would be illegal .
