I would like to add to my story one important observation. Klaus Nomi's mind and soul had an even larger spectrum than his voice. It was always such a treat to be with him. Witty, brilliantly smart, very understanding and above all equipped with an ultra dry humor that was highly contagious. I wish people would have had a chance to not only hear Klaus, but to feel him personally. :)
Unbelievable, but 35 years ago I was sitting with Klaus Nomi in the cellar room of my best friend in Bavaria. It was winter with two feet of snow outside, but nice and warm inside. We were sitting in pot-fog and it was as funny as can be. The more time passes, the more I cherish this most amazing evening. :)
(crying for the greatness of this performance) he just stands there in that kind of orinic scene and let his voice make all the rest to make us dream.
This work was originally written for bass vox in the 17th century. However, in respect for Klaus I have read than many perform this with contra-tenor as Nomi did.
I've never heard of him before. I came across him listening to the same song - performed by Andreas Scholl. What a difference! What a voice! What a performance! He comes pretty close to the heart of the piece - or might have hidden it... Great!
I weep when I see what passes for art or performance these days.
I look to the '70's and '80's, and although there was a lot of camp, low budget, and questionable experimenting, it was done with such professionalism and care., A certain je ne sais quoi that just puts it miles above what we have today.
I don`t give a F****,if you love or hate gay people! I am straight, but I have a huge respect for Mr Klaus! he was pure artist with style and honestly - hard to find similar figures these days in ugly, plastic and horrible MTV`s world! R.I.P Klaus Nomi - you truly deserve that!
@marcinwolski1976 I'm straight, and I love Klaus Nomi. I discovered him looking for the Cold Genius aria (this), and eventually found out that it was originally written for bass, so it's now a part of my repertoire.
@marcinwolski1976 i want to applaude you for your true words..........you understand something many narrowminded straight people will never understand............ have a good life.........and i know you will
to put it quite simply, there will never be another performer like this man. his talents and vocal range were extraordinary. we will never see a talent like this in our lifetime. rest in peace mr. nomi.
Once again, we're blessed with this high quality French TV clip. I don't know where Trylonperisphere gets them, but these are pure gold. Thanks for posting these!
C'est trop lourd ! Allez écouter ce que fait Nikoulaus Harnoncourt, le vieux pionnier du Baroque, notre génial maître à tous !! Incomparable, dérangeant, completement credible, sur youtube : Purcell: KING ARTHUR: What power art thou, who from below...
Whenever I listen to this particular song, for half a asecond, im not sure if this is real or not. Such an ethereal voice and stage presence. No one comes close. Your music will live forever Klaus Nomi.
I am just introduced to Nomi today. I have to genuinely ask myself the question, for the first time in many, many years, whether or not: "if a performer has revitalized interest in a performer or piece and done it great justice with great feeling, and people come to think of it as that performer's original work, do these fans and this performer deserve to be disillusioned of their fantasy?"
Purcell rules and made the chords and dissonants he is famous for, Nomi gave it a face so credit to both and both: rip, hope they meet in heaven somewhere and create more so I can later enjoy it as much as I do there cooperation here....
@gabrielapetrie This comment is a perfect example of Totally Not Getting It methinks.
