  • I was 11 in 1995 and Colin had both me and my mother completely hooked and drooling. Colin all the way, oh yes.

  • I think they are two very good adaptations of a book that is a work of art in itself. the 2005 movie was very good, even though some things made you almost expect a digital alarm clock to appear or some other anachronism of the sort. I find that by modernizing the aesthetics of the movie in general they made it more appealing for people who don't care or know about regency era.

Still, GREAT movie, has made a load of people want to know what P&P is all about...

  • 1995 version.......just not feeling it.

It was very poor acting in my opinion (from the lady who plays Elizabeth)

Colin Firth was all right, but there was just no emotion whatsoever.

Now, the 2005 version, was brilliant. I know it was missing parts of the book, but what do you expect from a 2 hour film? The 1995 version got it almost perfect because they had 6 hours! And the lake scene in the 1995 version? That wasn't even in the book!

All in all, two great films, but 2005 was the best! :)

  • I'm SO glad when I rented the videos back in the day (the 1995 version) I had NO idea what to expect w/ the story, plus I'm glad I saw the 1990's version because it was longer. Then I read the book and *barely* a thing is missing, it's nearly verbatim! With the Firth version you just get more! It goes on for days!

  • Colin Firth always has been and will always be THE Mr. Darcy. Accept no substitutes. I don't know what character MacFayden played, but it wasn't Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy. Maybe he got confused and thought he was playing Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights.

  • I think the 1995's Mr.darcy reminds me of a gorilla and the 2005's Mr.darcy reminds me of a gargoyle. Honestly not at all what I had pictured from the book, but then again nothing is. Atleast the movie of 2005 had better acting.

  • I totally aggree with you!!!

  • Oh, Mathew isn't all that bad. I mean, the movie was two hours, where the series was SIX. :/ there were obviously budget and time restrictions. This doesn't make 2005 worse, just less fortunate. And it was my first P&P, so it will always have a special place in my heart. <3

  • 2005 Darcy ftw! 1995 Elizabeth is so awful, look at her chin! Then again I read the book, and at the same time watched the 2005 version so Matthew was my Darcy from the start.

  • both darcys are awesome! they both a sparkle in their personality which defines them both :D

  • colin is the real mr darcy!!!!!!!! there's no argument on that XDLOLXD

  • I totally agree !!

Colin Firth will allways be my Mr Darcy...

    Thanks Freckles :)

  • The 1995 version is much better than 2005!!

    Pride and prejudice <333

  • I agree 100%!! :0)

  • @Freckles2185 i agree 200%

  • when i whached the real verision of the movie i died from over exposure to pure mark darcy. aka awsomeness

new one sucks. period. i think the poeple who thought it up fail at life and will be misreble crying in thier bed every night from putting into exsitance the most horroifing resemblance to a moive god ever had to endure. it is terrible and dosent have any bussiness being compared to anything that comes close to being thought of being compared to the real thing. thanks.

  • I have to admit, read the book first, but it didn't help that some of the pages was missing. Anyway, the first adaptation i saw was the 2005 and i watched at school. i fell in love with it by the end. Matthew's performance was heart stopping, but i was already a fan of Colin's after watching Bridget Jones. I wanted the P&P on dvd but couldn't make up my mind which one to have, but as my mum had seen the 1995 version and with my liking of Colin she persuaded me to choose the 1995 version...

  • ....I'm so glad i did. Colin stoll my heart and he still has it. Colin has spoilt me for other men cos i always compae them to him (or should i say Mr Darcy). It wasn't the wet shirt that did it for me (not that it didn't capture my attention), but it was all to do with his soulful eyes. You could just drown in so much intensity. He says so little while saying so much...that is what i admire in his acting skills and also a himself...and i can testify that as i've met him....

  • ....though not Darcy in character, he is still that, man. Oh and i loved the video you made...thumbs up all round.....read from my 1st comment or it wont make sense lol. Keep up the gd work.

  • well, i saw the 95' version first, then i read the book, and only later i watched the 2005 movie.

i guess it all depends on what you see/read first lol. :0)

  • same here, exactly. i ♥ COLIN FIRTH!!!!! The "fake" Mr. Darcy doesn't have the same air, class, or awesomeness at all as the REAL Mr. Darcy. :)

  • I don't see why you think that Firth is the original Mr. Darcy, they've been making versions of Pride and Prejudice since the 1930's. Anyway, I love both the 1995 and the 2005 versions. I think that Colin Firth is more likeable from the beging but Matthew McFadyen played Darcy more researved so you got to see him mature through the movie.

  • @ladyofeldar While opinions may differ, I seriously don't think McFayden's Darcy was "more reserved" at the beginning than Firth's Darcy. Firth's Darcy shows real depth, even under the arrogance and conceit that form his shell in the early parts. He is exactly as reserved as he is in the book.

While you are right that Firth is not the "original" Darcy (I know of at least one version that existed before the BBC one - with Laurence Olivier!), this does not preclude him from being the best!

  • I love Colin Firth and Matthew McFadyen equally... Firth because he showed the sexy side of a gentleman to me, and McFadyen because of his awkwardness, which I find incredibly cute.

  • Colin Firth IS Darcy. Matthew is plays too emotional and is too young-looking to be Darcy. He can't beat Firth in any way.

  • yeah! :) you are so right! im so glad i made this video - now i know im not the only one who thinks this!

  • @51stcenturygirl

    Mr Darcy is 28;elisabeth 21.

  • I like both Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen, for different reasons. i think that colin can play the gentleman and can still do the cold stare, which is key for the character. matthew i think shows a shyer side of mr darcy and also can portray his transition and growth throughout the story pretty well. i love them both. if i don't have a lot of time on my hands, the 2005 version works for me and i can really enjoy it. i only watch the other one if i have the time, but i enjoy it just as much :)

  • Would the real Mr. Darcy please stand up....that would be Colin Firth!! He's all man!

Little boys should not try to play a man's role! ummm that would be you, Mathew! haha

  • you got that right!! :0)

    lol

    thanks for the comment

  • I DEFINATELY prefer Colin Firth as Mr Darcy.

  • another Colin fan!!! yay!!!! :0)

  • First, the real man has never existed, and secondly, Mathew plays his role very well and I can also choose Colin as fake in 1995 because there are many more films have been past. I find him great and makes no sense that you Mathew immediately rejects Because I love him

  • Firstly, I absolutely adore your video. Colin didn't just portray Darcy he was Darcy in every sense of the word. After Colin there was nothing. Matthew spent most of the time brooding and looking emo. Squinting your eyes doesn't equal acting. It helped that Colin had someone who could act opposite him in the role of Lizzie. I see it's already been mentioned and I totally agree that Kiera plays the same role in every film she's in. A travesty to the Academy Awards that she was nominated.

  • YAY for the real Mr Darcy/ He is always Mr Darcy to me when I read the book. the 2005 version is some movie that shares it's name with the book, but actually is not based on the book, in my opinion. But it is not about looks. It is about style and charm too. Colin has that in spades.

  • thanks! i think your right about that :0) its nice to find more colin Firth/Mr Darcy fans -he always was and always will be the only Mr Darcy for me!

  • I thought Colin was wonderful as Mr. Darcy, but Matthew Macfadyen and the '05 P&P is by far my favorite. The '95 production had the luxury of time to tell the story but the '95 film told the story much more beautifully in my opinion.

  • I can't say I saw the remake remake remake of P&P, but I always loved Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, but no mention here of Lost In Austen's Version of Mr. Darcy................Elliot Cowan and dare I say, he is now my ultimate Darcy! Sorry Colin, Elliot was sexier and hotter than you! It's True! :o)

  • Although Colin Firth is the ultimate Darcy, in fact has ruinned me for any other Darcy, i wouldn't say that Mathew McFadyen is a fake Darcy.

Just another version. One maybe prefers Colin Firth to the role, yet MMF gave a decent portrayal, too.

  • The "fake Mr Darcy". Ha, ha, I love that! They're not worth being mentioned on the same day. The 2005 version is absolutely horrible, with a fake Liz Bennett and a fake Mr Darcy. They should've just let it be. The 1995 version is absolutely brilliant!!!

  • I know!!!

LOL - thanks i'm glad someone agrees with me :)

  • I have to agree, colin firth is mr darcy, I saw both versions and yeah there were time constraints so maybe not much development but colin is perfect in playing aloof and snooty and then his transformation is so pronounced, with matt I didn't feel like that came across in the movie, I felt he was just a bit broody, so I think colin is the best mr darcy ever, his eyes stole my heart!!

  • exactly my point! thank you! :)

glad you agree with me! :)

    thanks for your comment.

  • Seeing as we are not discussung the Elizabeth Bennet character, I can easily just let it slip that I can't stand Knightly in anything. As for Macfadyen...you cannot beat this man's impeccable acting talents and dangerously handsome good looks. Matthew has such subtle little moves, most you never notice right away, that make his acting ability un-friggin-touchable...especially by Firth. I like Firth, especially in WAGW (A. Bynes movie), but I can't think of anything else. At. All.

  • Ah - finally. I agree . . . Matthew's ability to portray raw emotion with such sublime subtlety is about the best I've ever seen. Watch Little Dorrit - a completely different character done just as expertly. I don't think Jane (A) would've objected in the least to his portrayal.

  • Glad you agree. I've seen Little Dorrit, and I love his character. Great show; I just couldn't stand L. Dorrit's siblings and father.

  • Mr. Darcy wasn't supposed to show emotion. For the first half you're supposed to think he's a jerk! I LOVE the 1995 version.

  • i actually like better the 2005 version in all aspects i loved McFayd as Mr. Darcy & keira knightley as elizabeth ...& yes i have read the book !! i my opinion "Fake" Mr Darcy stole my heart

  • i agree with you he is sooooooo yummy :D

but i like both they say that 2005 one not true to the book but they had to fit in the main bits in less time to the 95 one so they could put everything in if i made sense but i love both and whhhyyyyyy cant i have both darcys :D :D

  • I don't think the two should be compared as harshly as they are, the 2005 is very different because of the time constraints. And I think both Darcys are fantastic, just slightly different takes on him. Macfadyan's seems softer and sadder, but still with a bit of fire... (not to mention beautiful, soulful eyes), but Firth's had more time for character development. Difficult to compare, but both amazing actors! And to those who say one or the other can't act: you do better!!

  • totally agree

  • I think everything about 1995 version was good. Damn good really. Jennifer Ehle did an excellent job, she really portraits the elegant, witty and charming Elizabeth. And I am absolutely certain that Keira's acting is the same in every movie you see her in. I can even act better!!!!!

  • I saw the 2005 film first. Having never read the novel and seeing only that movie, I asked myself, "What's so great about Jane Austen? I don't get it." But I forced myself to read it anyway; as an aspiring writer I want to learn from the masters. I soon fell in love with Mr Darcy, and wanted to see the novel come to life. I heard the best adaptation was the 1995one. After seeing it, I was BLOWN AWAY by Firth's performance. It's even superior to the book. Colin Firth IS Mr Darcy. No competition.

  • I say Amen to that! :)

it's lovely to find other people who think like yourself...

    thanks for commenting

  • You are so right!...Colin's the best!!! :)

  • oops! That is supposed to say 95 not 15

  • I saw the 2005 before reading the book. When I was reading the book I just couldn't place McFadyen in the place of the Mr. Darcy I was reading. I watched the 1995 mid-book. After that everyone from the 15 version fit perfectly into the roles of the book.

    In my mind at least.

  • I agree that the 95 version's characters are perfect they are exactly how they are meant to be, but I thought Mcfadyen did it quite well. It was just keira that did a crap job in05 version, she really is the same in every film I see her in, her acting doesn't change even though the character does.

Great video though you showed all my favourite bits of 95 version (the better one by far!!!) Thanks for a fab video love Colin Firth!! :D

  • nothing against your video

    sorry about the gay thing

and mathew mcfadyen is a rugged beauty, not one of those pretty boys

  • Matthew McFadyen is to effeminate. I don't like those girly pretty boys!

I like manly men like Colin Firth!

  • you said it!!!!

  • youre gay!

the new mr darcy is way better

everytime i see colin firth, all i can think about is him in brigette jones diary!

mathew mcfadyen= the real mr. darcy

  • Ok i got it - you dont like my video....theres no need to insult me like that!

  • I remember seeing the version with colin firth and I think with respect to him and Matthew Mcfayden both acted well

  • personaly i think the new mr darcy is way better

  • I acknoweldge that Keyra was more passionate than Jennifer, on the other hand Colin Firth's Mr.Darcy is so much better than McFayden's.

Although as a whole I like better BBC's P&P than the 2005 version, because of it's 6 hrs is more complete, you can enjoy more of each character's story and also you slowly observe how Darcy&Lizzie fall in love.

  • couldn't agree with you more! :)

  • I agree, but when I read the book(and I read it before I saw either version) I think that Jennifer stays truer to the Actual Eliza Bennet then Kiera. I think they tride to hard to make the new version "apeal" to modern audiences. If it aint broke don't fix it! this story is not one that needs to be edited to apeal and The Colin Firth stayed true to the story and at the same time made one of my friends , who had never read the book, fall in love with the story!

  • I couldnt agree with you MORE! Colin Firth is the best Mr Darcy EVER, personally I believe he potrayed Darcy so much better than Matthew did!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I prefer the new Lizzy beater. i think that it would have been really good if Collin and Kiera worked together.

  • interesting idea - but i think Kiera as Lizzy looks too young for colin firth...

  • yeah I know. but it isn't keira that is to young she had Lizzy's age , it is Collin that is 10 years to old. I ment that the lizzy from 2005 with the Mr Darcy from 1995 would had been perfect together.

  • Mathew Mcfadyen is my favorite Darcy. So much more to his character.

  • even Laurence Olivier's Darcy was better than MacFayden's, he and Ms. Knightly where awful

Colin Firth is the best untill now

  • i don't see how you made your point at all, merely by showing clips. actually, your "fake" mr darcy part showed more of elizabeth than darcy. i think it's unfair to compare actor portrayals of a character. i love both actors (laurence olivier/greer garson version can be ignored - historical inaccuracy) because i think they were both able to display different aspects of the darcy character. anyway it really boils down to personal preference, which doesnt mean anything about an actors performance.

  • i DEF like the new mr.darcy and the new elizabeth bennett better. the old ones were ugly and bland. the new ones are MUCH better!

  • I almost feel bad for Matthew MacFayden. I felt like casting Kiera Knightly as Elizabeth was absolutely terrible. Maybe he would have done a better job if he had a better opposite? As is, I think the BBC 1995 is the best adaptation ever, and yes, Colin Firth *is* Mr. Darcy.

  • not sure if Knightly was the reason for MacFayden being a bad Darcy. but I'm right with you on the Collin Firth IS Mr Darcy comment :) and no other!

    thanks for posting Willoe :)

  • yea, you're probably right, I guess I was feeling a little optimistic.

Oh well, we'll just have to adore Colin Firth and hopefully just ignore the.. other. :)

  • I say Amen to that! :)

  • TECHNICALLY, Laurence Olivier was the original Darcy. And don't be so harsh on Matthew MacFayden; I think he did a really good job despite the fact that he will always be in Firth's shadow (and Keira Knightley in the shadow of Jennifer Ehle).

  • I agree with you about the shadows but...Laurence who??

  • you are joking right?

  • sorry, no...I have no idea who that is...is there somewhere on youtube i can see him?

  • Keira Knightley looks like her own shadow in this film. )))

  • YOU. ARE. AMAZING.

    I loved this! Totally agree

  • Thank you!! :)&hearts

  • you know in the new P&P in the scene when lizy is standing on the edge of the cliff i always have the idea that darcy is going to run past her and jump of the cliff shouting "im a real boy!"

  • LOL!!!!!

Now that would have been great to see!!! :)

  • I agree!! Colin Firth was much better!!!!

  • i absolutely agree! Colin was much better!

  • Colin Firth was a good Darcy, but I honestly liked Matthew better in P&P

  • this is so true! colin firth is a way better darcy! he just fits! matthew was crap at it! the whole new version was crap i think! plus, the first versions are always the best! great movie! you're 100% correct! :)

  • Thank you!!

I am happy to find more who share my opinion :)

    cheers! ♥

  • I like Matthew's Darcy. Colin is the cream of the crop, but Matthew did a good job.

  • LOL, I love how there's a short Matthew bit in the end but then it goes back to Colin Firth shots. XD XD XD Haha. But that's the way I like it. &hearts

  • Me too :)

by the way - how did you do the heart thing??

I would like to know how to do it too :)

thanks for your comment - and have a good day/night

  • Heh, there is a keyboard shortcut but I don't know it. I just type in & hearts without the space. :) &hearts

  • like this &hearts

  • yay! I did it!!!

    thanks!!! &hearts

  • I do admit Colin Firth was definatly the eye candy of the two movies and I'll never deny that but, Matthew did a really good job. You can hate me all you want but, I loved both versions of P&P

  • lol - I don't hate you :)

you're entitled to like whom ever you want...

  • I'd still agree with you. I'd choose Colin Firth anyday.

  • Colin Firth is amazing as Darcy! There can never be a better one.

  • I agree!!!!!

  • you can just see all the Mr Darcy fans if they ever got their hands on the person who cast that sap of a boy as darcy "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING"!!!! *bangs on his chest*

  • couldn't agree with you more!!!!

  • yea, and the music as well is sooo much better, its fun, its lively and very romantic

  • Those were my EXACT thoughts upon seeing the 2005 adaptation, FORGET McFadden FIRTH WILL NOT BE OVER RULED!!!!

  • I could not agree more with you!

  • 1995 version is soooooooo much better

  • If the two Darcys ever run for office, you should submit this for Firth's campaign. "Fitzwillian Darcy: Except no anemic pussy substitutes."

  • Great idea! thanks

  • I'm gald you liked it!

dont think ill do one of the two Lizzies, I only wanted to show the side of Mr Darcy, and how much better Colin Firth is as Mr darcy compared to the other one...so sorry about that...

  • I love it!! you should do one for the two Elizabeth's!
