The remastered ruined the snare drum, put vocals too much in front, the backing vocals sound like Fat Albert where in the original it sounds demonic. It just seems more organized on the original.
don't be so dramatic, remastered version is a lot powerful and close to today's standards. in 90's it was okay if some record's RMK peak level is below -11dBs or smt, but it's not the same today.
If they had released a mastered version of this album first then you guys would not be bitching about it... you would still think it was fucking awesome!
I would say that the remastered version is better quality and that it is awesome to listen to if you are a guitarist cus you can connect with how fucking cool the solos and riffs are :)
@xXHeavyMetalDudeXx You make it sound like the solos weren't cool before the remastering. When an album is remastered, it shouldn't sound completely different from the original. Plus the backing vocals on the remaster are a joke. But of course, I do respect your opinion and I can kind of see what your point is.
@TheDestroyerofStuff Oh right, sorry but what i meant was that in the remastered version the solos are louder and well just.... remarsted Thanks 4 correcting me.
Rust in peace was also my introduction to megadeth and i'm happy to have bought the remastered/remixed version. I had never heard the original version so its not like i knew what slight differences there were. I'd much rather have the better mix and sound quality than some slightly different vocal styles.
Many positives in the remasters. Especially the added bass prominence. Don't get some of the complaints. Some I can understand though, like the Five Magics stuff, and the drums do sound very processed at times. Though a few songs the drums seem to retain that organic feel, like on Tornado of Souls.
I think a majority of nagging comes from metalhipster faggots who think it isn't cool if it doesn't sound like it's from 80-90, though.
the 2004 version fucking sucks. fake sounding drums, terrible replacement vocals on some of the tracks, and the audio is fucking compressed and brickwalled. original handsdown.
The drums sound great (especially the snare) and the overall mix is clearer.
It does have its flaws, yes.
I do agree that the original vocals for Take No Prisoners, Five Magics and Lucretia are better but it wasn't Dave's fault. I doubt he'd have have re-recorded/used different takes if he still had the originals... and yes, the "obese guy" vocals on the Five Magics remaster do suck.
So they changed up the snare drum a bit, had to rerecord a few vocal tracks and up the volume. I don't think it necessarily sucks...it's just different. To be honest, I enjoy the remaster more.
One of my fav things about rust in peace down through the years was the sound of the snare drum. It was dry and technical and suited the album. For the remixed version Mustaine replaced it with a more standard snare sound which sounds like shit compared to the other one. Also, according to wikipedia the vocal tracks for some songs were missing so Mustaine had to re-record them. I prefer the originals.
Good video. Now I think it's obvious that the vocal tracks used for the remastered versions of Five Magics and Lucretia were not the original ones.
Rust In Peace was the first Megadeth album I bought. I had never listened to Megadeth before and I was unfortunate to buy the remastered version. I remember that I didn't like Five Magics much at first. After listening to the original version a few times, it became one of my favourite songs.
@metalrules13 Also, the backing vocals in Five Magics are different. On the original, it sounds booming, as if Satan himself was singing.... on the remaster it sounds like some obese guy.
@HolyDeth Exactly. Same thing with the backing vocals on Take No Prisoners.
Btw, have you seen Five Magics performed live? It's Ellefson who does the backing vocals live, and it kinda sounds like an evil robot or something! It's on their new "Rust In Peace Live" DVD.
It would be easier to hear the difference if this the volume was levelled correctly.

The main problem I have with the remastered versions is the drum sound. They sound artificial and crap in the remastered versions.
Also the original version of Youthanasia is miles better than remastered.

The original sounds so much better. This remaster sounds totally compressed and the drums have that overly fake processed sound to them.
