Was given this 37 years ago and still sounds as fresh as the 1st time I heard it. This music transcends to another level. I was extremely fortunate to have caught The Who live in the 70's, untouchable. I saw Zep, Floyd, Sabbath and many more who were brilliant, however, for sheer power to lift the audience out of their seats, The Who were an unstoppable force with Moonie & Entwhistle at the helm. Check the Hull version too on the Live at Leeds 40th aniversary issue. Absolutely blinding!
I swapped Live at Leeds on vinyl for the some other record (I forget which), donkeys years ago. Best deal I ever made. I've got all the re-issued CDs with Tommy etc but I want the original vinyl with me in my coffin when they bury me. Best rock record ever made. On the vinyl, just before they launch in to 'My Generation' you can hear Pete say "And now for a long, drawn out guitar solo". It was cut on all the CD reissues for some reason.
THEE definitive 10 minutes of rock music...Not intricate, fluid or whatever else high artistic expression is supposed to be. Just raw heel kick in the face hard rock angst incarnate! The fortunate few who were there must have left that place like a fighter who just got his ass kicked inside out...and thanked heaven for the purest experience of their lives....
When THE WHO toured the US on the TOMMY TOUR I was up front right by the speakers (when wheelchair guys could still get away with Sh*t). I tripped thru CACTUS and "Then" saw THE WHO do "TOMMY" all the way through without stopping. Daltrey hit John's bass with his mike and they were in each other's faces pissed as HELL, but never missed a beat. JIMI, WHO, TULL are my fav 3, but like children, I can't chose. They were ALL my boys with a different way to get it out.
@SamthePetrolhead I have heard him describe how he approaches his solos as following a sound....I don't think he percieves what he's doing in scales. I remeber him descibing a sort of creative visual scene that he sees himself floating in through space.....and that the sound changes the landscape of those visual scenes in his mind. He claims that abandonement is the key to playing well. Not so much in thinking about what note that is being played but the feeling behind the note.
During the '67 to '71 era, they always played an an extended jam after My Generation, which was a reprise of the rythyms from Tommy(for the most part). It was different every time because Pete would look at Moon when he wanted to change and the OX would always be watching both of them... it's called chemistry. Good bands have that.
I've heard this song so many times and wished I was playing it. The are no bands around today that can touch these guys. They were the best. I was fortunate to see them in their hey day including the last time the four of them played at MSG(3/11/76). My kids and their friends just don't get it. There really is something to be said for teenage wasteland
92% of teenagers have turned to hip-hop and pop, if ur part of the 8%, copy this message and paste it to an other video. DONT LET THE SPIRIT OF ROCK DIE!!!!
@constp1 Wrong!!! The solos suck because Pete Townsend can't solo worth a damn. Therefore this is NOT the best Live rock album, far from it, any Live Led Zeppelin record demolishes this. The Rolling Stones Get yer Ya- Yas Out is better than this too, because Mick Taylor's solo's worked well with Keith Richards terrific rythm playing.
@espdemon Wrong! Live At Leeds *** IS *** the greatest live rock album ever. And I prefer Zep / Bonzo to Who / Moonie. But they are both awesome bands and this album rules - The Who / Pete at their peak and as good as any Zep live. Stones - cripe they have 2 guitarists and stil can't play their way out of a phone booth. Great rock band also, but sloppy as all hell. In terms of musicianship - both Who and Zep are miles above The Stones. So Get Yer Ya-Yas out of here if you don't like it.
very similar to the naked eye some of the same eliments in here has well, i like this, always play the LP on deck, good loud, pisses my wife right off ha ha lol.
the live song is actully in 4 or 5 parts 1st my generation 2nd dont remember and 3rd is more or less an replica of the solo from naked eye so thats why it sound like it they also used the solo after my generation on woodstock
Keith`s drum part on Amazing Journey kills me to this day. It is a lead part as a drummer. Unheard of and unmatched. It literally attacks you from the speakers. Tremendous live album...
I first heard this album when I was in high school, way back in the day. This kid I used to hang out with, Adam Meltzer turned me on to this album. I think I listened to it for 2 years straight on my then, new Sony Walkman. Eben when I listen to it now; shit, I still think it is the rockinest live album ever made.
Fuckalmighty! This is serious shit for grown ups. Show me another band that had the sheer audacity to change their tune, mid career, quite like this lot of delinquents
When The Who toured in 1989 Pete wanted to save his hearing. Rog said, "Just have John turn down his bass and it'll be no problem". Pete said "No, it will be a problem, because it will leave too many holes in the music" That's why they went out that tour with the brass section and extra guitar and whatnot. BTW, those aren't exact quotes or anything. Just the general gist.
so, he layed down the groundwork to most of their songs. His playing is immortalized on all of their records and he is one of the best bassists in rock who ever lived if not THE best.
They did a jam like this after My Generation at Isle of Wight 1970, also at Amsterdam 1969, Fillmore East 1968 ( very sycodelic by the way ) and at Tanglewood 1970 that I remember
They did play extended jams on other versions of My Generation live. Check out the DVD The Who at Kilburn 1977. It has a bonus disc of their 1969 London Coliseum show. They do a jam after My Generation that is very similar to this one.
I've uploaded a MUCH higher quality and longer video of the My Generation Live Medley at the Coliseum, title "Proof That The Who Are the Best Band of All Time".
The entire tours of 1969 and 1970 this was standard fair. Some pretty good coverage of this by some intense fans on Youtube. But this was an extraordinary performance and the recording is perfect. 1968 tour had long jams, too...but more psychedelic or acid as said in the post by luksmr88
No... The Beatles are the most OVERRATED abnd of all time. I really love them, bey they are too overrated, especially in my country since McCartney performed here, and it sucks that nobody knows The Who in my place :(
They are not overrated. 27 number one songs. And who knows how many songs in the top ten. I remember when three of the top ten songs would be beatles songs.
They are really good, they are on my 5 top bands, but they are a bit overated... Some people thing they made everything, and they didn't. People remember them cause they did it better the most of the bands, that's why EVERYBODY knows John Lennon, but not lots of people who's Pete Townshend. But hey, if you don't believe me I love them, let me tell you something. I payed all my money just to see Paul McCartney live, and I don't think I'll pay to much to see Roger Daltrey live. :)
The Beatles are distinctly different. Both bands are great, but the Who rocked it harder and heavier, and with more attitude. They also sounded more musically distinctive.
its really amazing to watch Keith Moon drum, he looks like he was just having way to much fun, and he never looked tired or at least not that i could see.
hey tommy movie didnt butcher it, i think the only bad songs in it were christmas when those damn kids are on the trumpets, and how they changed the plot a little but other than that the finally was amazing and i nearley cried the first time because i didnt know about the who ot tommy and i saw the see me feel me part and that was when it all made sense, to me of course
Awesome

The entire "Live at Leeds" album is a masterpiece. Many people prefer the original, single vinyl record, and it is just stunning.
I prefer the two CD release of the entire show that came out in 2001 or 2002. Tommy was butchered in the movie, butchered on Broadway.
Only The Who could reveal its brilliance, and at Leeds, every note is on that second CD, one of the last times it was be performed in it entirety.
Pete was the first musician to figure how to use volume for more than being loud.
