@ellidan Don't forget the spanish, we had our own architecture and culture, destroyed by spanish, then left for massive insult to injury by the americans and japanese.
@ellidan although it was the Americans and Japanese who brought physical destruction to the Philippines, it was also the Filipinos who lacked the determination to revive a culture so beautiful. Other countries and cities heavily damaged during the war rebuilt themselves because of the determination of their respective people. The Philippines won their independence but lost themselves in regards to maintaing culture.
the american soldiers' hard push to drive away japs out of manila resulted in much more damage and destruction of manila and surrounding cities. their continued bombing and shelling of building, churches was a way to really scare the japs and filipinos who are japanese collaborators.
@ramraker - It was the only way to eliminate the Japanese from Manila. We cannot blame our Filipino-American soldiers who had to bomb the whole walled city of Intramuros and the churches inside the city. God bless the souls of these brave soldiers without whom. we would have remained under the yoke of Japanese rule.
Everything from Atomic Bomb's aim which they simply just wanted to test nuclear and chose Japan, The pearl harbor incident never happened, they made bunch of lie story of Japan History, Japan is now just being silent of every noises from brainwashed Koreans and Chinese. look "Secret history of Atomic Bomb" for reference.
The 9-11 tragedy is set up by US Govt'.
Setup for an opportunity to invade Afghanistan, and now they're also doing the same style to Iraq.
What you are saying is all based on conspiracy theories, which have no relation to reality. Japan was bombed twice to hasten their surrender during their World War II. 9/11 happened because of American complacency and lax security. Afghanistan was under a crazy theocracy, which is a breeding ground for future terrorists, while Iraq's Saddam Hussein was under a malevolent dictator who killed thousands of Shia Muslims and Kurds. As for Russia, it is not her destiny to lead or rule the world.
More than the historical artifacts and the architecture of the old city that were destroyed during the Battle of Manila, our greatest loss was the thousands of the country's best and brightest young men and women who were supposed to be the next generation of leaders and citizens. Many of them were killed by the Japanese as they went house-to-house and bayoneted even women and children to death in their defense of the southern part of the city.
Two excellent books on the Battle of Manila: "By Sword and Fire" by Alfonso Aluit and "The Battle for Manila" by Richard Connaughton, John Pimlott and Duncan Anderson.

well,...don't loose all hope, knowing the fact that manila and all together her precious jewels were blazed by the japs,....why not look on museums in europe like in madrid, paris or italy, i've seen old philippine pictures and artifacts preserved in there,...or in the US national liibrary of congress,...i've seen archival videos that have been captured in manila during the american regime, instead of moping o manghinayang, why not ask help to other countries that were involve, spain, US jap ;)
Below the standard of Tokyo.
God bless your country and you will be in my heart and my grand father was in the war at that time and i was in iraq twice and we both love your country mary mother bless you......
@suckthismotherfucker No i think i disagree. The Americans gave us a ton of war reparations. Its just that most of the money were stolen by corrupt rich Filipino families after the war to fuel political campaigns and rebuild what thy lost in the war. What the regular Filipinos lost the rich reaped.
ang maynila ay nabuhay noong panahon ng 1960's...kaya nga binansagan na "SECOND RICHEST ASIAN CITY right next to tokyo", ibig sabihin kahelira nya ang tokyo, paris, madrid and new york....but during the turn of the 1970's mr. ferdie marcus declared martial law...and the next thing you knew....the neglection (kapabayaan) in the city that is manila...punta ka sa quiapo maraming lumang bahay doon, kaya nga lang nasusunog o naagnas lang...
despite the total destruction of our beloved manila, i think we should be thankful to our American liberators specially Gen McArthur who debated with Pres. Roosevelt and Admiral Nimitz to land 1st and liberate our country rather than bypass it and invade Formosa (Taiwan) first which is being proposed by Admiral Nimitz. He really wanted our country back and fulfill his promise to return. In 1942 when he fled to Australia on the orders of Pres. Roosevelt, he felt he betrayed his army and the Phils
When the Americans landed on Oct 20, 1944 at Leyte, they are 2 months ahead of schedule. that's how eager Gen MacArthur wants to liberate our counrty which for him is his second home.
MacArthur initially ordered not to use air or artillery bombardment to prevent the destruction of the city when notified that the jap navy men are not gonna give up the city easily. His men followed his orders but the fanatical resistance of the japs obliged them to use artillery to blast jap strongpoints and minimize casualties because of the suicidal tactics of the japs.
They also used artillery to speed up the defeat of the japanese because they knew that each day that passes by meant more and more civilians dying in the hands of the japanese.
my father who is a 7 year old boy during the liberation always say to me that if not for the Americans, millions more of Filipinos could have been massacred by the japs (remember Nanking?)
yes but Americans are also the one that provoked peaceful Japan and Japan then attack US bases across the Pacific...so... the Yanks also holds the blame for the destruction of MANILLE
just look at their artillery weapons and oversentimental attitude, it had cost more damages than those of japan...
i agree with you at some points....Americans does introduce us democracy and Western culture, and then Japan came over uninvitingly and the next thing you know....CHAOS AND BETRAYAL!
It was the japanese who started the systematic killing of civilians, burning and demolition of manila when the Americans are closing in on the city. by the time the Americans have reached the city on Feb 4, 1945, the city was already burning.
Manila could have been spared from horrors and destruction of war if the Japanese Navy men followed the orders of Gen. Yamashita to retreat to the mountains and abandon the city which he considers not worth defending.
BOTH ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF MANILA
yes i know that It was the japanese who started the systematic killing of civilians, burning and demolition of manila
in fact they bombed numerous historic bridges like jones bridge, so that americans wouldn't be able to cross to the other side, were the japs has fled
It seems the focus here is not who started the war in the Pacific, but which country was responsible for demolishing Manila. I doubt either army worried about the physical structures while engaged in battle. Both sides fought with a vengeance. They fought for life not architural beauty. Survival could only be achieved if the opponent was inilated. To reach the enemy who would never quit...or to stop the US and the heavy artillery assault meant "whatever it takes". And it took a city.
the september eleven was nothing compared to this kind of tragedy of 1945!
so americans stop being some lazy old faggots who didn't do anything but being redundant and desperate for attention!...you are also the one that has caused this catastrophe in the philippines!!!!
first of all thank you very much! the battle of manila should always be remembered by everyone! especially mga pinoy sa maynila, second....you have a good eye and a great memory about the history!...1:34 is really the mendiola massacre!....i purposely use that in this video so as to add the emotions and historical background!.....Pareho rin naman sya eh!....tulad ng world war 2 ang mendiola massacre ay marami rin nabiktima sa maynila kaya dapat pahalagahan din ito!....:-)
Its a pity that the once pearl of the orient became a battle ground of two imperialist countries. So sad to see Manila in ruins and its very sad state now.
yes! its really depressing to see our beloved like that!....all the world class hotels, shops,universities,...and the most beautiful homes of different cultural styles,.....the best establishments, and all the sentimental treasures and infinite wealth....ALL laid to ruins.....virtually wiped out!....the true "Pearl Of the Orient"....is in total devastation!.....
Some survivors are left: The Bayview Hotel, the Museo Pambata, DLSU's La Salle Hall (though successive renovations have bastardized the interior of the structure), Rizal Memorial Coliseum, the Metropolitan Theatre... but we should take better care of these buildings, like what Singapore did to the Fullerton building (former Central Post Office). Imagine our post office turned into a grand hotel, with lights radiating down Taft Avenue...
you're right!!!...there are still survivors that still tell their stories like the luneta hotel, the rizal shrine, the san sebastian church, the san agustin church, old houses of intramuros, rizal theater, the quiapo church, ocampo pagoda (medyo pumanget lang ), the national museum, antonio luna's house, bridge of spain, hidalgo house, paterno house agrifina circle marami parin pala eh!....but i hope they can still make it for another decade!....tama ka! dapat ang post office gawin narin hotel!.

well,...don't loose all hope, knowing the fact that manila and all together her precious jewels were blazed by the japs,....why not look on museums in europe like in madrid, paris or italy, i've seen old philippine pictures and artifacts preserved in there,...or in the US national liibrary of congress,...i've seen archival videos that have been captured in manila during the american regime, instead of moping o manghinayang, why not ask help to other countries that were involve, spain, US jap ;)

Below the standard of Tokyo.
fernandosmyng 2 years ago
hindi ba ang martial law was also considered as the dark years of philippine history,....kaya naghirap ang mga tao noon, corruption by the military coups and etchos, kaya naghihirap ang pinas,...naregain nga lang nung panahon ni tita cory, pero na bagsak nung panahon ni fidel, tapos nagkaroon pa ng collapse ng asian stock market, dagdagan mo pa si erap at si tita glo kaya hayun!, wawa naman pinas

american leave us shit and kill alot filipinos.
suckthismotherfucker 2 years ago
@suckthismotherfucker No i think i disagree. The Americans gave us a ton of war reparations. Its just that most of the money were stolen by corrupt rich Filipino families after the war to fuel political campaigns and rebuild what thy lost in the war. What the regular Filipinos lost the rich reaped.

ang maynila ay nabuhay noong panahon ng 1960's...kaya nga binansagan na "SECOND RICHEST ASIAN CITY right next to tokyo", ibig sabihin kahelira nya ang tokyo, paris, madrid and new york....but during the turn of the 1970's mr. ferdie marcus declared martial law...and the next thing you knew....the neglection (kapabayaan) in the city that is manila...punta ka sa quiapo maraming lumang bahay doon, kaya nga lang nasusunog o naagnas lang...
thanks for the comment!
kevin080592 2 years ago

despite the total destruction of our beloved manila, i think we should be thankful to our American liberators specially Gen McArthur who debated with Pres. Roosevelt, he felt he betrayed his army and the Phils
lennonian316 2 years ago
When the Americans landed on Oct 20, 1944 at Leyte, they are 2 months ahead of schedule. that's how eager Gen MacArthur wants to liberate our counrty which for him is his second home.
lennonian316 2 years ago
MacArthur initially ordered not to use air or artillery bombardment to prevent the destruction of the city when notified that the jap navy men are not gonna give up the city easily. His men followed his orders but the fanatical resistance of the japs obliged them to use artillery to blast jap strongpoints and minimize casualties because of the suicidal tactics of the japs.
lennonian316 2 years ago
They also used artillery to speed up the defeat of the japanese because they knew that each day that passes by meant more and more civilians dying in the hands of the japanese.
lennonian316 2 years ago
my father who is a 7 year old boy during the liberation always say to me that if not for the Americans, millions more of Filipinos could have been massacred by the japs (remember Nanking?)
lennonian316 2 years ago
yes but Americans are also the one that provoked peaceful Japan and Japan then attack US bases across the Pacific...so... the Yanks also holds the blame for the destruction of MANILLE
just look at their artillery weapons and oversentimental attitude, it had cost more damages than those of japan...
i agree with you at some points....Americans does introduce us democracy and Western culture, and then Japan came over uninvitingly and the next thing you know....CHAOS AND BETRAYAL!

Yamashita to retreat to the mountains and abandon the city which he considers not worth defending.
lennonian316 2 years ago
BOTH ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF MANILA
yes i know that It was the japanese who started the systematic killing of civilians, burning and demolition of manila
in fact they bombed numerous historic bridges like jones bridge, so that americans wouldn't be able to cross to the other side, were the japs has fled
kevin080592 2 years ago
It seems the focus here is not who started the war in the Pacific, but which country was responsible for demolishing Manila. I doubt either army worried about the physical structures while engaged in battle. Both sides fought with a vengeance. They fought for life not architural beauty. Survival could only be achieved if the opponent was inilated. To reach the enemy who would never quit...or to stop the US and the heavy artillery assault meant "whatever it takes". And it took a city.

the september eleven was nothing compared to this kind of tragedy of 1945!
so americans stop being some lazy old faggots who didn't do anything but being redundant and desperate for attention!...you are also the one that has caused this catastrophe in the philippines!!!!

kidyo99 3 years ago
first of all thank you very much! the battle of manila should always be remembered by everyone! especially mga pinoy sa maynila, second....you have a good eye and a great memory about the history!...1:34 is really the mendiola massacre!....i purposely use that in this video so as to add the emotions and historical background!.....Pareho rin naman sya eh!....tulad ng world war 2 ang mendiola massacre ay marami rin nabiktima sa maynila kaya dapat pahalagahan din ito!....:-)

noted :) btw we share the same feelings about what happened to manila and our country.

Its a pity that the once pearl of the orient became a battle ground of two imperialist countries. So sad to see Manila in ruins and its very sad state now.

Its so sad to see the city of our affections in ruins... and more so knowing that its destruction was forgotten.
When will a good leader arise to rebuild our fair city once more?
kevinpunz 3 years ago
yes! its really depressing to see our beloved like that!....all the world class hotels, shops,universities,...and the most beautiful homes of different cultural styles,.....the best establishments, and all the sentimental treasures and infinite wealth....ALL laid to ruins.....virtually wiped out!....the true "Pearl Of the Orient"....is in total devastation!.....

Imagine our post office turned into a grand hotel, with lights radiating down Taft Avenue...
kevinpunz 3 years ago
you're right!!!...there are still survivors that still tell their stories like the luneta hotel, the rizal shrine, the san sebastian church, the san agustin church, old houses of intramuros, rizal theater, the quiapo church, ocampo pagoda (medyo pumanget lang ), the national museum, antonio luna's house, bridge of spain, hidalgo house, paterno house agrifina circle marami parin pala eh!....but i hope they can still make it for another decade!....tama ka! dapat ang post office gawin narin hotel!.
kevin080592 3 years ago
continuation....
