Having just discovered this version of The Messiah this year, I'll say that it's the standard by which I'll compare all future performances . . . just magnificent, both in the music and the bringing of the story to life.
This is just surreal to me. The musical performance is stunningly good, but I can't understand what the visuals are trying to accomplish. Maybe if I sat down and watched the whole thing I might figure it out, though I suspect I might not like what the makers were trying for. Oh, well.
The presentation of this Messiah performance is quite secular it's adaptation, but the performance of the music was truly spiritual and angelic. The best performance of the Messiah I have ever encountered.
The context is strange and would be good, interesting idea. It is correct... until "THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND"... Yet I would say that the joy for the Messiah is lost into sadness and grey
Can Someone EXPLAIN what is going on? What is the context for this???? This is so weird! Sounds GREAT though...very balanced, you can hear each part/section very well, no one overpowers the other.
amazon dot com-the producer was deliberately trying to remind his audience that all music is always contemporaneous -it applies to the world we actually have before us; so he puts a 21st century appearance on it. The play acting is done very effectively in my opinion especially with 'the people that once walked in darkness"
Very beautifoul, but why harpsichordist still can play like this? What is that, not a regular or beautiful voice leading at all, nor articulation, late, only few cheep"effects" like a bad secco recitative.. very god all, and very bad the harpsichord (shame on the continuo player...)
Perfect choir, wonderful expression and dynamics, I found the DVD on amazon.

This must be the "staging" I read about in Opera News. Very bizarre.

Need to stop ogling cute altos, too.

Actors today feel they are underpaid, so you'll see this type of uncooperative behavior more and more. Deal with it.
