@ApocalypseNow2011 I wouldn't go that far, but it's good. I'd say that he intros to Taxi Driver, Vertigo, Psycho, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut are some of the best ever. This one is good, but it's not great. The modern looking red text really kills it for me, considering that the rest of the film is done in the style of 1940's and 50's films.
My great uncle Brian is having this played when he's just about to be cremated, Gonna miss him so much and he loved this movie and I couldn't think of a better song. Rest in piece uncle.
I don't remember how I found out, but recently I noticed that the ring ropes look exactly like the sheets we use to write down music. It blew my mind. So perfect.
You know, I'm writing from Italy and today I turn 49.. Exactly 31 yrs ago, on the day I turned 18, a friend of my family took at my home Jake La Motta, yes, himself in person, Who was traveling at that time in his country of heritage.. We had wine and italian treats for the whole evening and this wonderful fighter told us a number of his nice jokes in an amusing hybrid ita-american language.. What a great evening I will never forget.. Thanks Jake for being that great, and for making my 18th bir
Jake la Motta was an interesting personality. The perfect one for de niro to act as. I really hope a movie as great as this one would one day be made of mike tyson which is able to capture his emotions and psyche just as how de niro captures la motta's in Raging Bull
If there was a God, and he was a genius in every aspect, and he decided to create a film, and he used raw epicness and power to create the opening sequence, it still wouldn't be as good as this.

Perhaps the most beautiful opening sequence in cinematic history. My wife chose this music to be played while we signed the register at our wedding (I'd agreed to it without really listening to her!) - it was the most amazing surprise and still makes me smile (ok, cry......just a bit).
Great scene from a great movie and i have to say that no 1 comes close to scorseses directing skills... directors now a days need big budgets and cgi to make a hit. Apart from clint eastwood i dont see any other great directors :(
Jake La Motta is as obnoxious a man as you could find: foul mouthed, ignorant, violent, mysognistic, self-destructive...yet when he is a bloated, broken has-been beating the walls of his cell, you feel his pain as yours. Acting is too mild a word to describe what De Niro does here.
this opening scene is just one example of why de niro/scorcese are the greatest actor/director combination in cinematic history....probably greatest opening to a movie ever....beautiful stuff...
@jasper2008ify BRO YOUR AWESOME AS FUCK, ya i geuss i was too pessimistic, PTA is a master director, and if u watch the movie closely he is just like scorsese, the camera is ALWAYS moving the tracking shot when daniel is drawing the machine is like the one in Aviator, and the characterizations are SO BOLD in both their movies, and pta has said that Taxi driver is his most favorite film of all time, it makes sense that he is the new martin scorsese. REALLY YOU SHOUOLD TALK TO ME AOBUT FILMS I ENJ
@jasper2008ify ya man i am happy to find a person who agrees with me cause its been really bothering me that a movies like avatar are being nominated for oscars and stupid shit like thaat. like its really just been bugging me. You know there is one director who i believe is the martin scorsese of our time, paul thomas anderson, there will be blood is a pure masterpeice, but other than paul thoms anderson and maybe todd field, we are fucked. if you like good movies, check out these directors.
@jasper2008ify ya i mean even spielberg who made ET, which to be honest is really great, not too much CGI, but i am just saying how can you hope when there is practically no chance, look at oscar winners of the past 2 years, slumdog millionaire, hurt locker, which are good movies, but come on...... WE had taxi driver godfather in the same decade, and this decade we haven't seen one movie be as good as that, i mean for some fucked up reason dark knight is being hailed as a masterpeices. No chance
@jasper2008ify martin scorsese was forced to cast dicaprio in the role just so that the studio would finance the project and the movie sucked cause the studio edited the whole fucking thing, and scorsese fought it, but you know how it is. HOLYWOOD studio vs the guy who loves to make movies. FUCK. DONT YOU GET IT? THERE WILL NEVER EVER EVER NEVER BE A GODFATHER AGIAN, and there will probly never be a scorsese either, cause the audiences are dum muther fuckers these days. JUST SAYING LOl. truth.
@jasper2008ify YOUR TOO OPTEMISTIC LOL. ok lets think about this for a second, avatar just made 2.7 billion dollars, with a shitty storyline, shitty script and a lot of CGI. Transformers made 900 mllion dollars, with one of the shitteist directors on the planet, megan fox and robots. Raging bull made 40 million dollars on a 25 million dollar budget. YUP HOLLYWOOD WILL LOVE TO MAKE ANOTHER RAGING bull. BY the way the reason scorsese worked with dicaprio is cause thats the only way GONY get mone
@malows1234 Yeah Michael Bay is the worst director in the world. This piece of shit never filmed art and is content about it. Wow what a laugh that this asshole has the right to judge Scorsese.
@Ada1613 totally man it made my blood boil, and he was commenting how if scorsese films were better they would make more money than his films, and that people pay to watch what they like. SIGH i really wish scorsese got more money than fagits like BAY, it just breaks my heart to see such hard working talent unrewarded. Am i alone on that or SHOULD HOLLYWOOD FUCK ITSELF
No techno-wizardry here. That's what the greats like Scorsese can do and people like Michael Bay can't. They can shoot the simplest most uncluttered scene ever and make it beautiful, transcendent, emotive, powerful, sonorous and ultimately compelling. Filmmaking at its very best.
@wat870 man martin scorsese is the best, u should look on youtube michael bay said in a interview that he thinks martin scorsese makes boring films, and that taxi driver was boring and that scorsese uses vulgar language to get his point across... its on youtube you guys should check it out.
You know it just amazes me how everybody knows Rocky, but nobody knows Raging Bull. And don't get me wrong Rocky is a great film but Raging bull is a master piece
This opening illustrates how when we all have to battle our inner demons, its like a boxing ring.: only two of us, no one else. and if we don't emerge victoriously, what's the point in living? and i love how we don't actually see its De Niro. so it the figure alone represents everyone in the world so to show how at one point in out lives, we have to battle our inner demons. whether they're easy or hard.
As great a syntesis between the moving image and music as you are likely to find. Says everything about Jake LaMotta without much at all: passionate, elegant, yet almost vulgar and cheap. Perfect.
@PPSH41callofduty i think they filmed it that way because in the book, la motta said early on that he always remembered his life as an old black and white film
how ironic that such peaceful and nice instrumental music be for such a violent film.
if you wanna see real boxing then watch this, not that rubbish from rocky!!! watch the scene where he punches oneof his opponenents and the spit flys towards the screen almost as if it is going to hit the tv audience!!!
fucking brilliant story and lesson of one mans own self destruction!!
@nicky29031977 yes, it was deliberately done. Like Nino Rota's theme for The Godfather...very beautiful, what you would not expect for a violent gangster movie.
@10sDog raging bull, the godfather, taxi driver, clockwork orange( singing in the rain ). all very violent films with contradictory sounding music and yet they all work so well for films which are classics!
@williamrafe1 fair enough, but when i said rubbish from rocky i was on about that it's too fairy tale and sentimental and nothing to do with realism and everyday life which raging bull is!!!
@nicky29031977 u know, i never thought rocky was like u said, fairy tale until i read raging bull, but u also have to see that rocky is a movie, and in movies things arent realistic. this is real shit, u know?
@PPSH41callofduty he did beat up his women, well known fact, read Deniros book by J.Baxtor, or Boxing history Books, They had to cut a lot of domestic violence from the film.
I think youtube deleted the 13,000,000 views this used to have so it wouldn't go mainstream.

The Black and white film is a masterpice because it represents when Jake Lamotta was really in the League.
PPSH41callofduty 1 year ago
@PPSH41callofduty i think they filmed it that way because in the book, la motta said early on that he always remembered his life as an old black and white film
williamrafe1 1 year ago
how ironic that such peaceful and nice instrumental music be for such a violent film.
if you wanna see real boxing then watch this, not that rubbish from rocky!!! watch the scene where he punches oneof his opponenents and the spit flys towards the screen almost as if it is going to hit the tv audience!!!
fucking brilliant story and lesson of one mans own self destruction!!
nicky29031977 1 year ago
@nicky29031977 yes, it was deliberately done. Like Nino Rota's theme for The Godfather...very beautiful, what you would not expect for a violent gangster movie.
10sDog 1 year ago
@10sDog raging bull, the godfather, taxi driver, clockwork orange( singing in the rain ). all very violent films with contradictory sounding music and yet they all work so well for films which are classics!
nicky29031977 1 year ago
@nicky29031977 its funny cuz it was made by the same people as rocky (the producers, not scoresese)
williamrafe1 1 year ago
@williamrafe1 fair enough, but when i said rubbish from rocky i was on about that it's too fairy tale and sentimental and nothing to do with realism and everyday life which raging bull is!!!
nicky29031977 1 year ago
@nicky29031977 u know, i never thought rocky was like u said, fairy tale until i read raging bull, but u also have to see that rocky is a movie, and in movies things arent realistic. this is real shit, u know?

Love how the camera is a little panned to the left instead of centred, allowing DeNiro to have move up and down as well as sideways.
Brilliant scene.

@kizugrey Michael Chapman: Mutt American
And for my money, he's the real star of this shot.

De Niro was a mutt, he wasn't a real Italian. His Father was Irish and Italian, and his mother was German, French, and Dutch.

@WALLY1234556 everything except the wife beater part was completely accurate!
PPSH41callofduty 1 year ago
@PPSH41callofduty he did beat up his women, well known fact, read Deniros book by J.Baxtor, or Boxing history Books, They had to cut a lot of domestic violence from the film.
WALLY1234556 1 year ago
@WALLY1234556 Oh I didn't know that they had to cut it out of the movie thanks.
