  • What a sad and yet beautiful song!

  • Oh. My. God.

  • nice

  • 5 gay fucks

  • My favorite poem, beautiful

  • roy west

  • Luke Kelly's version is much better

  • Poetry in lyrical voice, verses, story and music. Magical!

  • great song, i'd love to hear joanna newsom do a version of this one

  • There a poem called "unquiet grave" and the author is unknown but it was written in the 15th century, i believe this song was inspired by the poem. it is one of my favorites. "i crave on kiss from your cold clay lips" it is a beautiful and haunting poem.

  • Haunting.

  • It's the soft northern accent-so sick of hearing fake Oirish in folk tunes.

    Keep it real Kate.

This fine old English song goes back to the 1400's.I have read it is connected with the Black Death hence the lips being deadly.

  • @seaxwielder

Honestly, I find this too pretty and too slow for a ballad about death and mourning. After about three minutes I have completely lost the meaning of the words.

On your other topic, who is singing fake Irish accents in English ballads?

  • So beautiful it made me cry

  • Awesome

  • This is a breathtaking version. Kate's voice is so distinctive that comparison with other versions is meaningless.

  • ween - cold blows the wind

  • This is absolutely beautiful. For a more traditional, breathtaking-in-its-purity version, check out Joan Baez. From an early concert. Stunning in focus and clarity, it shows the reason she became, well, ... "Joan Baez".

  • 10 ot of 10 to Kate Rusby for her beautiful modern rendition of this old English folk song. She makes it live again

  • What can I say ?

I like Luke Kelly's version, but the female voice brings a whole different dimension to this. Pity you can't see that.

To understand, look at the video response put up by IvoniceAstird.

    You might learn something.

  • Luke Kelly did this by far the best - IMO

  • @blumenthol

Well, go to Luke Kelly s' version and tell 'em!

  • this is by far the most tragically romantic version i've heard.

  • What a beautiful song!

  • This version is quite different to Luke Kelly's - more sad than ardent!

  • I think she sings this excactly right - the slighly weary almost laconic sadness leaves room for the lyric to work. Wonderful arrangement too.

    Top stuff.

  • this song just uproots all memories of loved ones i have lost.its good in a way to visit those memories too.

  • Beautiful! This is a folk circuit staple, but I've never heard such a heartrendingly powerful arrangement. She sings on the Show of Hands version of High Germany, and I recommend that for the same reason.

  • I just happened upon Kate Rusby here, and I would pay to listen to her sing scales. Kate's voice is so lovely, as beautiful as June Tabor's in her own way. There's no artifice or imitation, she sings just as if she were dong dishes or dusting.

What stands out here is Kate's interpretation. She perfectly evokes the emotions without overdoing it. "Just one kiss of your lily white lips" and "if you weren't my own true love, as I know you well to be" are just amazing and heart-wrenching.

  • It was meant as one, she sounds totally artless and effortless when she sings, although she has a great deal of impressive technique behind that sound.

Is what I meant to say. :)

  • She's wonderful, isn't she? Have you heard 'Elfin Knight' yet? That, and 'Little Jack Frost' are my favourite songs :P

  • She does the jolliest "Elfin Knight" Ever! :)

I love Polly, and her Sweet William's Ghost is awesome too.

I read a review where some critic was snarking about her doing too many covers. Um, dude, trad music consists of mostly, er, COVERS! *sigh*

  • This song brings tears to your eyes. I lost someone before... he was the only person who understood me. If he listens to me still, despite being gone, I hope that this song reaches him. My brother, I love you.

  • My brother died when he was 19, and he was the only one who understood me in my family. He was declared braindead in my 21st birthday. :(

This song, in all it's variations, always makes me think of him. And want to cry. ((((Aurora)))) He CAN hear you, somehow.

  • Thank you. With combining hopes in similar cases, maybe our wishes will be reached.

  • The most heartbreaking version of this song...

  • How pleasant is the wind tonight I feel some drops of rain I never had but one true love In greenwood he lies slain I'll do so much for my true love As any young girl may I'll sit and mourn all on your grave For twelve months and a day The twelve months and a day being up The ghost began to speak Why sit you here and mourn for me And you will not let me sleep What do you want of me sweetheart Oh what is it you crave Just one kiss of your lily white lips And that is all I crave
  • Oh don't you see the fire sweetheart The fire that burns so blue Where my poor soul tormented is All for the love of you And if you weren't my own sweetheart As I know you well to be I'd rend you up in pieces small As leaves upon a tree Mourn not for me my dearest dear Mourn not for me I crave I must leave you and all the world And turn into my grave
  • her voice is actually heartbreaking beautiful x

  • the chords for the guitar are EM,D,C,D G,C,D

  • i bought it ages ago!

  • Kate is lovely - I have seen her!!!!!!

We don't have to WIN the human race ... just SAVE it ...
