The lyrics of both versions do almost nothing for me, a few pretty lines aside.
But the tune! Oh, the tune! The tune alone brings tears to my eyes! No matter what lyrics you put to it, the outdated "we bow to Britain" lyrics OR the the wimpy PC tripe (that could fit almost ANY country it is so vague and "unoffensive") the tune alone is so beautiful it still fills my heart with love and pride! And THAT is why it is superior to "O Canada", whose music AND lyrics are bland, generic, and heartless.
This is the old version. I like the later version sung by Michael Buble at the closing of the 2010 Winter Olympics. See Wikepedia "Maple Leaf For Ever" entry for the lyrics which have less "political baggage", and are more appropriate and meaningful for modern Canada.
I am an American but agree that this should be Canada's national anthem. O Canada is to generic and with a word change here or there could be used or apply to other countries. The Maple Leaf Forever is truly Canadian and only Canadian. It make the hair on neck stand up when I hear it. It is rousing and patriotic. Embrace your history Canada and be proud of it. You see in America what happens when you do not and it is not pretty.

The place where the song was written now belongs to the Historic people. The place where it was written is near where I live. On a side wall at a resturant near a park a couple of blocks away from my place it has the lyrics to this song painted on and has the orignal artists name written on it as well. Along with a big Maple Tree and a Maple Leaf.
This song was never written for Quebec, which had it's own songs. It as well as O Canada were sung by Canadian soldiers during the first world war. God save the Queen was still officially the national anthem at that time as we where still part of the British Empire. The battle record of those men who were refured to as Storm Troops by German military intelligence and used as assault troops by the British high command was a driving force for an independent Canadian government.
Sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, eh? From Utah, USA? They did a good rendition. But has Canada's all-enveloping, stifling, "politically correct" government banned any Canadian ensemble from performing it for public consumption?
I'm sorry if you can't handle opinions other than your own. maybe if you open your mind and realize that there's other people in this world besides you, you would realize what an asshole you are.
lol, what an ass hole I am? no, no, no i think youre mistaken. "For those who want the immigrants to take over our country and culture, move to a third world hellhole and see what you'll eventually turn canada into if you let those people in by the bucketfulls." im afraid you sir, are the asshole
you sir tell the turth I know we let other people in but there are almost to many. The other religions are slowly but surly cutting out what canada is.
I heard that once this middle easterns wanted a remeberance day cross taken down beacuse it was a cross. MAN ALIVE IT WAS A GRAVE MARKER!
-harsh, considering they were here before us and we conquered them. Get a book, Canadian history for dummies, second edition, and educate yourself before you make rants. The US comment, that was made by those who fought to reform our nation many years ago.
@wilkes85 ... im a memeber of 2nd Queens Own Rifles of Canada Airborne regiment... i love my Queen and would DIE for my Country ive been over seas and back 3 times, i spent 24 months in that shit hole they call Afghanistan, Fuckin love my job
@wilkes85 ... yeah and all you Canadians who say " fuck the commonwealth" guess what.. leaving the commonwealth is not up to us.... And the queen has said her self MANY times Canada is and allways will be the left waving hand of the Common wealth, Thee most sacred land in the Commonwealth... Oh yeah and by the way we leave the common wealth say good bye to our free health and well funded schooling, also say good bye to the defense of the Empire 53 countries most of whom are battle ready
@wilkes85 We have exactly the same issue here in Australia. Hordes of people coming both leagally and illeagally and staking their claim on our island. It's maddening. A people shouldn't try to change the place they move to in order to make it just like home. Appreciate it for what it was when you moved there.
@wilkes85 What an ignorant, hateful diatribe! 34 thumbs up? Do you people not think? What is it to be Canadian, not that! You sound like you live in a bucket!
Those people?! Fuck you, sir, I am of an immigrant family myself. My people came here in boatloads, to the sharp objection of some of the locals. But we were patriots. And we FLEW at the opportunity to defend OUR HOMELAND in 1940.
As, I am sure, are you. Unless you forgot to mention your own background, which is rare for a native.
If ever an American citizen were to believe that they were inferior to their Canadian cousins, I would recommend them come here, and see that they could not be any more mistaken.
There are many NICE Quebecers.. To whoever called quebec separatist fools... HOWEVER, it does seem (if you're a moron and just follow the news/etc) that most of you do wish to leave (why?, so many negative factors compared to just staying)... But I agree, this song is MUCH more inspiring. I'm 25, and I even get choked up when I listen to this song. O' Canada is SO LAME! I love this song... Throws everything on the table... Genius song!!! GO CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOO!!!!!!!!!!
It is a shame that this is not our national anthem. But to true Canadians, ones who are glad that Wolfe liberated Canada from those priest-ridden cock-lickers, it is the national anthem. Oh Canada is for the politically correct liberal idiots. The Maple Leaf Forever is for Canadians who had granfathers die at Vimy or in Normandy. True Canadians, not frogs who are doomed to live off the wealth of the rest of Canada and to forever be the poorer, intellectually retarded members of Canada.
@SRGW HAHAHAHA Canada was liberated you said ? There was no english ass in Canada before Wolfe just to mention. It was a conquest not a liberation. And maybe frogs would not have been so poor if the roastbeefs had not burned half of their country and taken up the continent they had discovered up to the rockies. Also, true Canadians are precisely quebecers, not only because they colonised Canada 150 years before the English, but also because Canada has been Quebec's name till 1840.
its sad that more Canadians dont know this song, imagine singing this in Vancouver when we win gold, or at Sabres games where half the people there are leafs fans
I know... I'm personally a french-speaking quebecer but seriously, the maple leaf forever is just more "Canadian". Oh Canada is more of a synthetic pop ballad than an anthem.
'Oh Canada' is a piece of sh*t that was penned in less than half an hour out of lack of a real anthem at a national conference set to a piece of poetry from much earlier. And it SUCKS as a march, rendering us empty-handed at parades. Not to mention how it sounds like a Christian prayer at parts, representing a anthem for people of many religions.

@theallcanadian I like how to seem likeable a quebecer has to say he isn't a separatist. Otherwise, after all, we know he would get insulted or people (read: canadians) would just not acknowledge his presence/discourse. That's a great thing, because, it clearly doesn't exemplify why there are separatists, no, of course not. Canadians are so open minded they can accept someone who doesn't share the same political views, right? Anyways, keep rocking the I-hate-myself spirit, bro!
@theallcanadian I remember a francophone friend of mine telling me that the seperatist folks are basically like the southern states in the US. :P that having been said the Maple Leaf forever is a good God Bless America, a secondary anthem that's more high class sounding but not the official.
@theallcanadian I like the maple leaf forever It holds what canada was to hold for me comming as a child o canada has nothing to what I saw canada being but the maple leaf forever is what I prefer to think earlier today I'd never herd of this.
A GREAT SONG thank you for posting this. I wish I had each and every email address of any Canadian vet or vets family that has ever served this great country. As I would pass this on to the millions of related family members that remember the importance this anthem had had and carried so many men and women to give their final all.
CSFBC, I am taking Canadian politics in College right now, and just for some of the lyrics of this song (about the Irish, Scottish and English flowers), that is the reason that the Quebecois hate this song, and thats why it is not a song of Canada (not much anymore anyways)..

what a retograde video and song. There are no visuals of average canadian folks, everyone is white and Anglo. Natives should have been integrated. All images relate to white politicians and soldiers... and yes, the queen. This in not my Canada - non merci.
It is a British song, about English, Scottish and Irish Canadians. When Chinese and Native people want to start writing songs about how great Canada is and how they contributed so much to it then I'm all ears.
The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples identified the use and control of land as the source of " the most intense conflicts between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people." The commission called on the government to change its approach to Aboriginal land claims.

(re:-jdog43) France created a trading post, Britain created Canada, but it takes the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to sing this song because Canadians have no voice for it. Canada is a land of blithering, brainless, cross-eyed, grinning-idiot, pot-smoking, ex-hippie zombies who like to talk out of their behinds. The only thing which keeps it alive is artificial life support from the great American economy next door. God Bless America and the Stars and Stripes Forever!!!
hey num nust your calleing are nation brain less, we have the 7th best education sysem in the world, check where the US is, pot is not legal and are economy is in better shape and if canada cut off all the natural gas oil and hydeo power half of the US would be in darkenss blithering, brainless, cross-eyed, grinning-idiot
bigcaper862: I've seen lots of rants on YouTube with appalling spelling and clueless grammar, but I must say, your post takes the cake. You do Canada no favor at all; you embarrass it. Did you read your comment before you submitted it? Honest-to-god, you're posting for the universe to read. Don't you care even a moose-turd?
sorry if my SPELLING bothers you but to be far it is not the worst, i have Asperger syndrome which makes it hard to write spell, and do math. I was also more involved in the fact that whats his face called us brainless so that made me mad. SO i do care about my spelling but the big thing is do you go around looking for bad spelling
Psi am from the east sowhat do you think iam to spell like
So many history specialists here, amazing. It doesn't really matter who founded the country, just be proud to be a Canadian and pass it on. Any racist comments just don't belong. Keep Canada Canadian, and enjoy the vastness and the beauty of it all!!!!!!!
Modern Canada celebrates mass ethenic imegration. I am one of the few True Canadians in my circle of friends, and I am proud of that fact. There are soo many diverse cultures in my own backyard.
And Without our ties to the British Monarchy, we would be State 51.
And the French established this land from nothing and started many of the Canadian traditions, and also gave us a bilingual identy to be proud of.
CylonAndrew: Pardon me, Mr. kumbayah, but what is "ethenic imegration?" I tried, but couldn't find those words in any dictionary. Couldn't find "indenty" either. Maybe my mistake was consulting an English dictionary, not a "guess at it" dictionary as taught in publik edukayshun.
Can your circle of diverse cultures kindly help with a translation? Apparently, the English language doesn't count in Canada nowadays. Insaalah.
It was not the French who made the Dominion of Canada a Bilingual Country but the British. The British shown tollerance to the French Canadians by giving them rights to use there Language (French), attend there Church (Catholicism) and even kept there Laws (French Civil Law- For Privage Matters). However we all know that the Province of Quebec is not bilingual because the Quebecois removed English as an Official Language and made French the Sole-Official Language of the Province by Bill 101.
Northgrant I hope you realize that Canada did not start out 'white' Canada was 'brown' Native 'brown' my 'brown' maternal ancestors welcomed my 'white' paternal ancestors to this land the same way 'white' people should welcome others now. So please keep you ignorant, racist comments to yourself
All blessings on our (USA) neighbor Canada. Please elect pro-freedom, limited government candidates, and show the way. USA is in the grip of state socialists. Pray that we recover.
Ill-fated? Yeah, we've had troops in Afghanistan almost since 9/11. You do remember 9/11 don't you? Nationals from more then 90 different countries were killed that day, including Canadians. Yeah, we are in Afghanistan. It was not just an attack on the U.S. It was an attack on western industrialized nations, by international terrorists. And yeah, our family has been involved with the Canadian military since the War of 1812, and the 4th Lincoln Militia. The whole video is great. Proud!
France is not a mother country of Canada. The only mother country of Canada is Great Britain. France was the mother country of New France but the British beat them for New France and New France became the Dominion of Canada which was a British Colony and not a French Colony. If the Quebecois don't like Canada being a British Nation and not like having Great Britian being the mother country and having the Queen as our head of state, they can leave Canada at once.
Congrats for refering to the 'Dominion of Canada' not often heard in modern -politcally carrect- disscourse. You also make a good point I am sure many people who lived beneath the yoke of the french empire would have jumped at the chance of sharing Quebec's fate! Moreover of all the international statemen/women of the english-speaking world HM is renown for excellent command of the french Language, contrast that with the likes of Degaull when he visit Canada or the UK
New France did not become the Dominion of Canada, it became apart of the province of Canada, the Dominion was formed in 1867, and no the dominion of Canada is no longer our official name , it ended in 1931 with the statue of Westminster. I do have to agree with you guys on keeping the Queen as our head of state, it is so important to keep our heritage and not become a republic like America. Just beause we have her as the head of state does not mean we are not independent.

i wish people would stop saying god save the queen, WE ARE CANADIAN not british, fuck the queen, long live The Canadian people and ARE motherland Canada
bigcaper862: Study your history. Where did Canada come from? What is Canada? Sorry, but you're inextricably linked to the UK, and France, and the USA. Be a man, suck it up. "The Canadian people and ARE motherland..." Did you mean OUR? Bad, naughty Canadian publik educashun.
What bigcaper was probably trying to say was that the Queen is a foreign head of state and therefore should not represent Canada symbolically or not. She is not and never will be Canadian. The governor general position is an expensive and meaningless figurehead position and should be abolished along with Canada's final link with its archaic colonial past. We are a diverse, strong and independant nation and should be represented as such by our official head of state.
Don't say Fuck Quebec. Remeber Quebec is a Province, a Province in fact created by the British in 1763. You can say fuck the Quebecois and France. Don't throw the baby (Quebec) with the dirty bath water (Quebecois). The best thing that should happen to Quebec is that the Quebecois should be assimiliated and the Province Anglicised. English should be the only Language in Quebec. Its time for Canada to impose English on the Quebecois and see how they feel. Give them a taste of their own medicine.
do you both realise that the british ended french america? look up the seven year's war, britain took all of frances land in north america (everything from quebec to buffalo, NY and more) and canada should be proud that the quebecois and the other canadians get along so well after such horrible fighting, why would you want to disrupt that?
The French did not care about North America. They were given a choice in the Treaty of Paris of 1763 to retain either New France of the French West Indies, the chose the French West Indies and ceaded New France to the British Empire. Francois Voltaire called New France "A Few Acres of Snow" showing his contempt about the value of New France to France. The British cared and did more for Canada then the French cared and did for New France.
With every squirrel, chipmunk, Muslim & immigrant claiming discrimination and demanding Canadian taxpayer redress for phony ills, I'm amazed Canada would allow such a politically incorrect anthem to be posted -- let alone letting it be so perfectly recorded within its boundaries (chorus, orchestra, etc.).
This is my Bluenose (look that up, O Clueless Ones) immigrant grandmother's "national anthem," political correctness be damned. I'm USA, thanks-for-coming. God bless Canada. USA thanx U.
I am suprised that you only found our this song existed yesterday! When were you born. We sang this song at school throughout the 50's and 60's in Canada.
You are right it is powerful but the words should be changed to reflect all within our nation!
My grandparents on my dad's side both came from Holland, and although they still are proud to be Dutch(sometimes I wonder why), they still accepted Canada as their new country, and didn't pretend like all the laws should be like they were in Holland and stuff like that. That's what new immigrants should do today, instead of classifying themselves as something other than Canadian even though they live in Canada. You should be proud to be Canadian, I sure am!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to have to argue the difference between accepting the culture and being part of it - I live in USA and I'm Polish, I am NOT American and NEVER WILL BE AMERICAN. I accept the culture as I live here and respect it, unlike some other people. But yeah, accept the culture and everythign since you're the guest if you're an immigrant
Thanks and also really, Plains of Abraham was really the last huge battle for the war against the French and English...officially lol. I mean I don't really think that the 1922 emblem was that great because who could draw it by memory. At least the 1946 proposal was better, the union jack with the red background and a golden maple leaf. Shows our culture and the maple leaf. And Andrew Muir is french decent so he clearly didn't find it offensive. What's done is done and shouldn't be changed.
The phrase "the thistle, shamrock , rose entwine", stands for Scotland, Ireland, and England. We never hear this tune in public because there will always be some bleeding heart crying RACISM . The biggest threat to our heritage is political correctness.
Agreed. If immigrants can't accept our culture then go somewhere else. What are we suppose to say? "Oh yea the Europeans didn't make and find Canada, everyone did. YAY!" If we were in India or whatever and mass amounts of europeans or Canadians came, they wouldn't even think of politically correcting themselves.
I'm Canadian and I'm pissed about almost everything they did to cut our ties to the U.K. and all that. I mean the french separatists wanted to get rid of Maple Leaf Forever because it honours the English Victory. Well boo hoo, what are we supposed to say? We all had tea time in Quebec? No, Plains of Abraham was the battle that determined who owned Canada. French would make an anthem just like this. THAT'S WHAT PISSES ME OFF ABOUT CANADA. WE TREAT SEPARATIST BASTARDS LIKE KINGS.
As far as I'm concerned, Canada is our greatest ally, our loyalest friend.
Canada has always been there, from the trenches of Ypres, to the skies of Southern England, long before America decided to join in.
From Britain, thank you Canada!

But I agree, this song is MUCH more inspiring. I'm 25, and I even get choked up when I listen to this song. O' Canada is SO LAME! I love this song... Throws everything on the table... Genius song!!!
SRGW 2 years ago 4
@SRGW HAHAHAHA Canada was liberated you said ? There was no english ass in Canada before Wolfe just to mention. It was a conquest not a liberation. And maybe frogs would not have been so poor if the roastbeefs had not burned half of their country and taken up the continent they had discovered up to the rockies. Also, true Canadians are precisely quebecers, not only because they colonised Canada 150 years before the English, but also because Canada has been Quebec's name till 1840.

Anyways, keep rocking the I-hate-myself spirit, bro!
kalossimitar 1 year ago
@theallcanadian I remember a francophone friend of mine telling me that the seperatist folks are basically like the southern states in the US. :P that having been said the Maple Leaf forever is a good God Bless America, a secondary anthem that's more high class sounding but not the official.

When it came to the Aboriginal peoples of Canada, they were
not always as welcoming to each other, never mind the Europeans ( getting away from the just White idea).
Your maternal ancestors fought over territory with other
tribes, they attacked at dawn killing women, children, old
just as Europeans did.
The competition against each other drew them into alliances
with the Europeans. Champlain had musket, he demonstrated
against Iroquois, Iroqouis allied with the English enemies of
the French.

Canada rocks!
CylonAndrew 2 years ago 2

UnitedEmpireLoyalist 2 years ago 5
When it comes to the sentiments of statements on the tolerance of the British, I have to admit mixed feelings.
The British as a whole discriminated against themselves, the
laws denying Gallic or Galege language to Scots and Irish.
Tolerance for Quebec was to win over French support in case
of American uprising which happened, with the Catholic church influence. French did participate in Confederation
However today there is a feeling of too much APPEASEMENT
Where do you draw a line without fear.

BTW Quebec is a part of Canada.

Congrats for refering to the 'Dominion of Canada' not often heard in modern -politcally carrect- disscourse.

UnitedEmpireLoyalist 2 years ago 4
do you both realise that the british ended french america? look up the seven year's war, britain took all of frances land in north america (everything from quebec to buffalo, NY and more) and canada should be proud that the quebecois and the other canadians get along so well after such horrible fighting, why would you want to disrupt that?
buffalosabres4thecup 2 years ago
The French did not care about North America. They were given a choice in the Treaty of Paris of 1763 to retain either New France of the French West Indies, the chose the French West Indies and ceaded New France to the British Empire. Francois Voltaire called New France "A Few Acres of Snow" showing his contempt about the value of New France to France. The British cared and did more for Canada then the French cared and did for New France.

Agreed. If immigrants can't accept our culture then go somewhere else. What are we suppose to say? "Oh yea the Europeans didn't make and find Canada, everyone did. YAY!"
