This song really takes me back...to middle school. My friends and I would sit around after school and listen to records, and this was one of out favorites. Thanks for posting this.
This song is actually said to be an ode to Mary Ellis. Mary Ellis was a woman who fell in love with a sailer in the late 1700s. The sailor went to sea and promised to Mary her when he got back. For fourteen years Mary Ellis waited for him to return but he never did. She died and was burried in new Brunswick. The looking glass is a band from new Brunswick. You can still see the grave of Mary ellis today.
I just love this song. Every time i hear it hear it i drop everything and just dance. Believe it or not i joined the navy in 1986 because i loved this song so much. I enjoyed the Navy for 13 wonderful years along with a handsome sailor i have been married too for 20 plus years. sailorgirl forever!!! Thank you Looking Glass-Awesome song!!!
I LOVE this song! I have 2 neices named after it. One was named Brandy in the early 80's and the other was named in the 90'sThis was both of their moms' favorite songs. Both women are different as night n day, but perfect music is perfect music. Also, because of this song, I've always loved silver wayyyy more then gold. It seems to cleaner, purer and wilder, in a spiritual way. I love that he brings her a braided chain from the North of spain. :)
I think it's one of the great songs ever in the European folk song tradition. The lyrics are timeless. They're first class but there's a spooky habit of the major words of the lyrics landing on musical notes that have an especially appropriate feel for them. I've played Celtic trad all my life where melody is king, and I've always rated this as good as our best. It helps that I was a sailor and dating when it was a hit.
one hit wonder. They had a number of hits in Australia before. Suggest you listen to boys in town, science fiction or pleasure and pain as more indicative of their career than I touch myself

this song reminds me of that King of Queens episode. Kevin James is hilarious

This song was supposed to be about a guy, but the record company wouldn't produce it unless it was straight. Kind of rocks your world doesn't it?

Wonder how many girls were named Brandy because of this song?
Still one of my very faves from this era.
One smooth voice....

It all depends on your opinion, though. I like the songs you listed as 'sucking'. Well, at least some of them.
So, yeah, it all depends on your taste.
