Sorry this is an incomplete description - yes aim a little laterally (to the side) rather than to the midline of the septum, but you fail to mention the spray needs to be directed backwards, rather than vertically up against underside of nostril (things pass back through the nose space not "up" as we tend describe in everyday speech). As well as tipping the head forward, the spray also needs to be pointed backwards aiming for just above the ear, i.e. spray backwards through the nasal space.
