I think technology makes it easier for us to talk one another, but I think you're wrong to say that we're really communicating because of it. This is all just chatter, Ian. Real communication and connection takes place face to face, not through a webcam. In that sense, YouTube is just one more step backwards. My guess is that you don't even know your neighbours names. Time spent with parents and time spent talking to people on webcams are very different. I'm taking Japanese IV in college right now. It's pretty hard learning a language 3 hours a week from a native Japanese speaker/prof. The idea sounds better coming from a stoned psuedo-messiah than in actual practice.
Its a retarded idea, you don't learn new languages just by hearing a foreigner speaking it while being lost in translation all the way, you'll need a common language like english but even that isn't enough.

You have good ideas, i know it can be hard to put these things into words. Read some books on Zen Buddhism, they have good ideas on no self, it might help you understand more. I dont think internet alone will solve all of this. I think what you want to create is a global community, but this will take more then just communication. It requires action and change. Actions create change.

I think technology makes it easier for us to talk one another, but I think you're wrong to say that we're really communicating because of it. This is all just chatter, Ian. Real communication and connection takes place face to face, not through a webcam. In that sense, YouTube is just one more step backwards. My guess is that you don't even know your neighbours names. Go talk to them first and worry about Obama later.

Time spent with parents and time spent talking to people on webcams are very different. I'm taking Japanese IV in college right now. It's pretty hard learning a language 3 hours a week from a native Japanese speaker/prof. The idea sounds better coming from a stoned psuedo-messiah than in actual practice.

You have good ideas, i know it can be hard to put these things into words. Read some books on Zen Buddhism, they have good ideas on no self, it might help you understand more. I dont think internet alone will solve all of this. I think what you want to create is a global community, but this will take more then just communication. It requires action and change. Actions create change.

Here's the difference. I'm 52. Ian's 27. When I was 27, 90% of the time people waited for people at the "top"-i.e. political,religious,and cultural leaders to give them information and direction. I think getting cams in as many areas as possible is a plan already in place by other entities, the internet age as its going will do that with almost no overhead... you are right in all you say this type of access will open up, but theres always the evil few out there, im not sure if the positives will outweigh the risks, if it does, youre right, the possibilities are endless

Yes this technology has infinite uses. Put this in schools; yes. Put this in homeless shelters.. no... Put this in public libraries YES!
