  • I love Glass's music but all I hear & feel here is a cacophony of drum strikes. The orchestra seems mostly irrelevant.

  • Nothing compared to john mackeys piece it calls for you to use drumsticks on your timpani with a warning that you'll damage your heads haha and maybe your timpani. I think its the second part of groove I can't recall right now.

  • @paradiddlepedro Hahahahaha yeah I remember reading that somewhere. I literally laughed out loud when I read it hahaha.

  • Oh my gosh. My soul died a little bit when he did a buzz roll on a timpani at 3:25ish. I almost cried. Both of these guys create a terrible sound. This is NOT how a timpani should be played...and should sound.

  • timpani are super expensive i wonder how much those cost all together!!!!!

  • @loho174 ikr! just sticks are $45 XD XD XD

  • @victoriatoma I KNOWW!!!! CRAZY.

  • What group is playing this?

  • @btsears It's the Greenwich Village Orchestra at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, NYU. Philip Glass was in the audience for this performance and thought it was one of the best interpretations of his piece.

  • Fucking Great!!!!

  • The timpanist to the right of the conductor is my teacher!

  • too fast..

  • The part calls for hard mallets. Yes, the tone suffers, especially on the larger timps; but with them there would be no articulation. Despite the hard mallets, this recording is quite muddy. The soloists are too far apart and their sound is not unified. It is difficult to record timpani with a "room" mic, as the tone goes straight up. With the soloists on the front of the stage, they don't get the projection of the orchestra shell. So the tone dissipates quickly.

  • sorry. should have read "without" hard mallets there would be no articulation.

  • btw, why are they using such hard mallets? too much attack.

  • The conductor is a woman, and it wasn't a very good interpretation. It may be the acoustics of the room, but the violins sounded like they weren't in tune with eachother, and the timpanis were a tad out of tune..too tight on the skins, I'd say.

  • Why does the fact that the conductor is a woman matter?

  • @MattM2011 Philip Glass was in the audience for this performance and thought it was one of the best interpretations of his piece. The conductor is Barbara Yahr who is by far an outstanding conductor and gives a lot of the other young conductors a run for their money. She was also assistant conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony under Maazel. So she knows what she's doing. BTW, the strings sound a little out of tune because it's a community orchestra.

  • uh

they shouldnt use such hard mallets

it would give the music more um....

    whats the word...

    feel?

    oomph?(not rly a word)

    uh

    i cant think of it

  • depth

  • YES!

    thanx

    XD

  • violins are out of tune, the conductor is way over his head, and the timpanist from left has no skills. terrible interpretation of such a beautiful piece of music.

    listen to evelyn glennie

  • Maybe the concerto must be played like this ha,I've heard a concerto for typewritter and orchestra and the concert is 16th all the time

  • wow I've never so so many timpani. That looks like a very strange way to set them up but that is because I am only used to 4 at a time

  • More post-modern drivel! Disgusting!!!

  • that is so cool!!!

  • that was truly incredible, i really want to learn to play that. how many timpani did you use?

  • looks like 8 stage left and 7 stage right

  • i wish timps didnt sound like crap when theyre recorded, they sound total different when you play them :/

  • yeah. why is that.. they're so awesome "live" but any time somebody records them they sound like.. crap =|

  • I really can't hear the low end strings over the drums, shame. Not knockin' the boys on timpani, but the low strings just don't cut through.

  • i think it means philip glass, the composer

  • when you say glass, what exactly do you mean by that?

  • ...

  • timpani is the BEST percussion instrument these guys are on FIRE!

  • You're an imbecile

  • Mission Impossible! :)

  • a 10 inch timpani? lol

  • You kiddin'? The smallest one's well over a foot.

  • for normal timpani, yes, but custom ones can be much smaller than the 20in. ones they are using

  • I was only refering to the smallest in this video; in reply to P3rcuss10n's comment...still, 10 inch seems crazy, am I wrong?

  • i have not seen it but ive been told of them, its custom ond only for cases where you realy need to go that high, but thats quite rare, i dont know of anyone who makes them.

  • i saw this in concert and it was unbeleavable

  • Great job Gordanius!!.

Please, reload Mov.2 to complete this concert!!.

    Thanks

    FJ

  • you missed my favourite bit - around 05:10 - the timpanist sitting down had a little solo bit... listen to the BBC version at about 4:55 and you'll see what I mean.

  • oops its at about 2:45 in this vid.

  • I am quite sure there is no "10 inch" timpano. The smallest timpani size in production (both here and in europe) is about 20 inches.

  • what orchestra is this? and who are the soloists?

  • timpani drum

  • Good, not great though. The orchestra was really off on some parts. I think that any orchestra with the means to get 14 timpani should be able to pull this off a little tighter.

  • sorry for my bad grammar...I* MUSIC*..:d..if u don't like how's timpani sounds u can listen the violins or somethin' else

  • like a professional?i play trumpet to, but a like everythig about music, with muzic.:)

  • what a boring bunch of nonsense

  • if u don't like don't watch...

  • I´m sorry I did. Being a professional, I like to know what´s out there. But as the saying goes, curiosity killed the cat

  • A professional what?

  • timpanist, with the Philharmoniker Hamburg in Germany

  • and a cute one too, from what I recall.

    <- says ex girlfriend.

  • Uh, do I know you? I have an idea who you MIGHT be, but I won´t get my hopes up yet...

  • I'm pretty sure you know me, unless I have you completely confused with another timpanist I knew 10 or so years ago. ;)

It is interesting to see you again at this horrible youtube concerto. This recording sounds like garbage cans. I know you're much better than this. I should bring the family to Germany someday for a show.

  • Gotcha!! You ABSOLUTELY should come over, and bring all the umpteen little ones!! Germany ain´t the best place to live (because of the people), but I have a great job, and for now, it´s enough.

You can find me on Facebook if you wanna chat some more:)

  • Seven drums apiece.

  • awesome...each timpanist must have about 8 timpani...
