    that alone causes awe

  • why?

  • I think the basic idea with the "public option" is that first of all it would potentially be cheaper because the numbers of people covered by it could potentially give it enormous bargaining power.

The govt could say to doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, if you want our business we want low prices, much like the way Walmart for example can get the lowest prices from manufactures because of the quantity of product purchased.

In addition the public option would be cheaper because it wouldn't need to spend money on advertising, lobbyists, and it wouldn't be a for profit enterprise.

The money it saves would also allow it to offer subsidies for low income people, and cover people when they change jobs, and possibly (this is a contentious proposal) if they have pre-existing conditions, or are temporarily unemployed.

It is also expected that because the public option will be inexpensive that private sector insurance companies will need to lower their prices as well in order to compete.

The argument against it is the typical pro big business argument, which to be fair isn't entirely without merit. Prices paid for medical treatment could possibly be driven so low that the health care industry would spend less on R&D, and insurance companies could go out of business.

  • I like you worm. I was just trying to force my will on fakesagan just for a moment.
