  • It's strange seeing these two together after Berlin insulted Wooten's bass camp. Thank you Victor for being the bigger man and forgiving Berlin.

  • Jeff looks like he spends most his time playing World of Warcraft then practicing his bass, but what a talent he is!

  • These are two of my favorite bassists - some of their recordings are great listens which much to enjoy and learn from - i attended jeff's one week intensive and he's really advanced in note relationships and many aspects of music - however i dont like this jam very much... as a musician it holds my interest somewhat, but as a listener it wasnt a good experience - i think we should forget this jam and move on to these guys prime material - IN MY OPINION

  • wonderful playing!

  • Vic plays "licks" and "riffs" in a couple of positions. Jeff plays fluid horn like solo lines, and he uses the entire fretboard. Jeff's playing is far more musical, and worlds ahead of Wooten.

  • Vic Woo's accompaniment was groovier! Both great bassists though. Vic Woo's solo also had more spacr and breathed more.

  • Love them both but...Berlin had the tastier licks.

  • Berling owns Wooten a lil bit in this one!

  • both are better!!

  • victor lost it when jeff busted into some latiny jazz awesomeness!!!

  • What's frightening is Jeff doesn't look at his bass, even during large jumps, that's how well he knows his fretboard. Had a lesson with him once, nice guy.

  • What truly wonderful musicians. Both obviously show their well deserved fame for technical chops, but i am most blown away by their ability to listen and respond to one-another. Just one thing... Is Jeff really big or is Vic really small???

  • @greatballsofbass Jeff is a tall huge man!!!

  • @greatballsofbass Combination of both.

  • They play together... GOD and... GOD!

  • talkin' bass

  • both are amazing... end of discussion...

  • 6 people just binned their instrument ...

  • 3:15 the camera man messed his pants

  • This is the concept of heaven for me:D

  • A Love Supreme for all musicians, not just bassists.

  • Were they getting married afterwards? Cheesy decoration! Lmao!!

  • I met and studied with Jeff Berlin. He is a "once in a lifetime" master of this instrument. His knowledge of theory transcends just "bass playing theory". He's like the Andre Segovia, Arthur Rubinstein, Pat Martino or Ted Greene of this generation. He's the master bassist, and that's just that. He's at the top, alone.

  • @TheSteveSteele You, my friend are 1000% correct, and one of the few that understand that. Jeff's playing is unparalleled and worlds ahead of Wooten.

  • I love what JB did in the beginning. Vic is sick but I find him to be less musical than I like, most times.

  • @baudilus I'm glad that you can quantify musicality so concretely and then post that definition as fact. I think Wooten is at a level of musicality where, along with many other great musicians, it cannot be used as a scale of comparison.

  • great performance - a pity about all the usual youtube yawn yawn " so and so is better than so and so" comments.

  • AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! What a 'Nasty' line at 3.35!!!!

    LOVE IT!!!

  • Wooten = Groove = much feelings in his melodies .. Wooten = Humility = Peace = no competition .. Wooten has a lot of technique, lots of groove and that makes him a master of the instrument. Not equate to another bassist.

    Greetings from Uruguay

  • @ismabass1

    I totally agree

  • Comment removed

  • @delitemyheart - I reckon you're being a bit harsh on JB - I reckon what you're seeing is to different personalities meeting on common ground - VW is a naturally shy bloke and JB likes a bit of eye contact.. no big deal.. Try listening to this wihout watching the clip - I think they compliment each other very well.

  • @royism i think your right. I have repented from what i said in my comment..so i removed it now. Thanx for pointing that out man!

  • @delitemyheart - cheers mate :)

  • @royism indeed they sorta do

  • Is a bass UFC like a chicken KFC? Does KFC kinda contain the word F*CK? Guess you'll not have time to read this with your packed programme, but comparing masterful musicians like it's a sport is a sport! Your comment is a bore, and popular, like Kenny G.

  • Saw John Pattituchi live with Chic Corea in Minneapolis back in 1991, and he blows both these guys away.

  • @richiebeegood You are so funny I tell yo what. You go ask John Pattituchi What he thinks of Jeff the legend Berlin and of The rhythms master Victor wooten

  • YOU GUYS ARE CONFUSED WITH WHAT CAN DO AND WITH WHAT HE LIKES TO PLAY. I'VE TRAVELED WITH HIM AND HE CAN MIMIC ANYONES STYLE TO A T. THEN HE'LL COMBINE THEM. LOL. I HEARD JEFF ADMIT THAT VIC WAS ALL AROUND BETTER.

  • 3.09 !!!!!

  • Jeff Berlin does have some killer technique, even though its not as flashy or as apparent as Wootens. Listen to his redention of 'tears in heaven' on his 'taking notes' album. He plays bass alot like a classical guitarist. The way he will let some notes ring out while playing others & other subtle things in his playing are very difficult. I'm kind of bad at describing it, but just listen to it for yourself. I feel it's more of a challenge then the double thumb technique that Victor is known for.

  • this is bass player history

  • jeff is better than wooten

  • @TheMezak Victor can do everything Jeff can do, but Jeff can't do half the things, Victor can, on a bass. so in other words, Jeff can't touch Victor. Sometime what Victor does is hold back, because he knows if he wants, he would blow away most bass players.

  • @noinwe Sadly no one hold up victor in the same light as Jaco pastorius as Jeff is. In terms of having an effect on modern bass playing Jeff, Jaco and Stan Clarke are the shining lights and anyone else who reaches greatness in bass playing today does it on their shoulders - they have the cumulative effect on bass playing style and technique akin to a nuclear weapon...no one and I mean NO ONE else comes close...except John Pattitucci

  • @bakerj02 In terms of revolutionizing the electric bass as we know it, so did Jamerson, totally different style, but they're all great players. Awesome to see two amazing players jam out.

  • @noinwe

Jeff can do stuff victor can´t and Victor can do stuff Jeff can´t. Nuff said.

  • @SevenCircles Victor can do what Jeff does, in his sleep. Jeff Berlin is not even close to Victor Wooten. Jeff is good bass player though, he's just no where near Wooten!!!!

  • @noinwe

Victor is a great groover and has a lot of flashy technique, but Berlin's knowledge of music is VAST.

  • @ZappaFan101 You obviously don't know much about Wooten.

  • @noinwe

Don't get me wrong - Vic is an amazing bassist. I am quite familar with his work. I got a couple of his solo albums and a lot of bela fleck. I just feel alot of his music does come off more technical than musical. Jeff's knowledge of music is just mindblowing. He's got an amazing talent when it comes to phrasing. He can play something so advanced and complicated, but he makes it sound so effortless at the same time. That to me is much greater than technical playing, that's all...

  • @TheMezak oh c'mon already... you are a baby musician and/or human

  • lord of the bass victor wooten

  • Got two words for you: FOUR STRINGS.

  • @lizpan1 If 4 strings are good enough for these guys and Carol Kaye, James Jamerson, Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Flea, Stu Hamm, and Billy Sheehan (and more), well, it's enough for me!

  • Saw Wooten with Bela Fleck and Jeff with Bill Bruford. This is a nice little jam but is only a small taste of what they can do.

  • nice.......

  • Jeff Berlin is certainly the man, but the way he's standing and looking at Victor makes me laugh. I can't even listen to the music if I don't minimize the page

  • I acknowledge that they are great musicians but i've grown tired of hearing endless modern jazz fusion bass offs or jams... Honestly, this stuff has really started to bore me. which is sad because they are great players... I just can't take this style anymore. I'm just no longer entertained by prog play. Impressive? I suppose so, but I think wooten shines best in my eyes when he plays the simple things. Same goes for Berlin. This stuff has no emotional association for me.

  • @MST3Killa I think you have very little understanding musically of what is going on if you can't appreciate the fact that this is more than just a show of technique.

  • @DrVinkBlowJob I think you don't understand my comment. I know it's more than a show of technique... but as I said, I've lost my taste for their style... When they play the simple stuff, it triggers more with me emotionally. When it's more complex, It looses some of it's character for me. These are my opinions based on my emotional responses... If you can't understand that, then you have absolutely no understanding of what music is and why people feel what they feel as a result.

  • Not only does these guys hit ALL the right notes, but they make all the wrong ones sound beautiful. Really starts to groove around 3:55.

  • jeff berlin champions con scott henderson y neal schon, victor con steve smitt bestial

  • This is music

  • Just can't help but wonder why they didn't up as guitarists instead since they love playing so melodically and in the upper registers ;-0

  • @Lorbeer321 Probably because basses are just so much cooler.

    :P

  • I'd have to say Jeff has got Victor by a small margin...his solo's are a bit more interesting. Good shit !

  • @BiorythmicDrifter absolutely, I'd say jeff's a BIT more interesting!

  • im sorry, but i think victor's facial expressions are hilarious!

  • All those notes and musicality between the both of them, and guess what?......they are both using 4string bass guitars!

Just goes to show how much you can do on 4strings!!!

  • i'd prefer the melodic parts of their solo's..

  • Jeff the BEST and Wotten PLEASE GO TO STUDY.

  • @cx7at you too .

  • this brings a clear picture of what david and goliath looked like, love both of em.

  • Jeff is f***ing great...

  • the first note of victor's solo. the first note of victor's solo........ bad. mother. fucker.

  • bravo!

  • both of them make me feel like pure disgusting shit

  • 2 Awesome bassits. I have to say if I had to pick one, Berlin would be the one. Victor's technique is over the top awesomeness and he has great groove. However, Berlin knows his bass in and out, and is VERY educated in the theory of music. I am not saying Victor doesn't have a great understanding of his bass, but Vic even admitted his knowledge of theory isn't that great. Berlin's ideas of harmony are just jaw dropping. None the less, both of these guys are just amazing.

  • markbass for life victor and jeff are inspiring

  • Both are good listeners too.

  • Vic is a beast! Jeff is nice too...got his own style. V just has more structure & soul & tempo to what he laid.

  • hahahaha Jeffberlinlookssofunny

  • different of this two masters

jeff berlin has a really mellow sound obviously an amazing technique

and wooten has a lot of groove !! .. both cant play anything that you ask for

theres no limits for this two bass masters

  • Nice!!!

  • I really dont think you know what you're talking about!

  • Wooten the hamster ;)

I prefer by far Berlin, he has a more fluid touch, and more class

  • Jeff berlin is an excellent bass player. you have to realise that this is a spontaneous jam, and both players have different tastes and styles. Therefore, the notes and speed that they play at any given moment will vary. You can tell they both enjoy what they are doing, so there is no need to say that one thinks less of the other.

  • Victor is just like, 'What is this white guy doing? He has no soul!'

  • lol agreed. thats wuts kool bout victor hes got pocket and chops

  • if thats what you think he tbelieves.. you havent understand what victor is about yet.

  • @Harbec

Oh, please, there are plenty of 'white' bass players that have soul. The only thing that Jeff has EVER concentrated on is his technique. People like Vic, Jaco, Marcus, Stanley, and others have something 'special' that we should all strive to work towards, not the technique that Jeff has focused on. We should focus on being musicians instead of being 'bass players'. I'm pretty sure that Vic agrees with me.

  • I love Jeff Berlin's touch on the instrument

  • Ya Vic and his brother Reg will make you shit your pants.. Every Wednesday night at the 12th & Porter club Nashville Tn USA

  • orgasmico!

  • If Victor was gonna bust a nut in your moms eye, that's what his face would look like. LOL

  • It's called guitar face. It's an uncontrollable side effect from playing a stringed instrument. So much focus is on the muscle movements of the arms and hands your brain sends mixed signals to the muscles in you face and forces you to make an orgasm face... If you played guitar (or bass) you would understand.

  • two of the creepiest bass players in the buisness. But of course they are excellent players.

  • what u mean?i dont get it..

  • What? How?

  • :? creepiest

  • awsum jam...

  • nice little jean pierre diddy!

  • love how both change rythm at 4:50

  • these dudes are really vibing hard! total focus and comradery.

  • yeah i know but the sound of the notes you play above the 12 fret isn´t the same like you play the note on an lower fret on the guitar.

    know what i mean?

  • hey i heard that song in an elevator or call waiting on the phone someday good playing guys

  • The successful person ( like Victor and Jeff ) has the habit of doing the things other people don't like to do. Jeff & Victor don't like doing them necessarily either, but their disliking is subordinated to the strenth of their purpose.

  • Both those guys are smoking. Berlin's got a legato thing going on his solo's that u don't hear a lot on bass

It makes it flow. Might of got that from his years playing with Allan Holdsworth.

  • Bass doesn't sound that good soloing in the lower end with another player playing the bass part.

  • Because he's primarily a soloist in much of his personally-done music. It's his style on the instrument he loves most.

  • looks like these two are playing at a wedding hall

  • They are. It's a place called "the Kapok". It's what the trailer park set consider a classy place to get hitched.

  • LOL!! Right...I'm like where are they at...the vestibul of a Romanic wedding hall??

  • must be someones wedding cause they need a gig, lol.

  • Wooten is way better keeping the groove and comp together.

  • i was too busy enjoying the music to distinguish the better player, don't know about you assholes. John Entwistle was in the Who, that's why he is viewed as better.

  • Both players are good respectively....but Jeff Berlin had more feel than Vicky out of that bass!

  • for solo Jeff Berlin is away better.

  • wooten is good, but berlin is THE MASTER

  • Are you kidding! Berlin sounds like the stuff you learn in class. Wooten flows more natural.

  • I strongly feel that all these fucking morons who say entwistle was better than guys like Jaco, Wooten, Clarke, and Miller, are severly retared, Entwistle was good no doubt, maybe bass player of the milenium, but what the fuck does that even mean, in a pure head cuttin duel between Entwistle and Jaco, or Wooten, Mr. Entwistle would surely lose without a doubt, and if there is a bass player in the world who disagrees, than switch instruments, because you are fucking retarded!

  • WTF, Is this some kind of Bass UFC?!!!!? Usually folks that sit around trolling youtube comparing masterful musicians like it's a "sport" can't hang in the real world of music themselves. Besides, there's probably some Joe Blow in shit kick middle America that can make all these guys bow their heads! Every guy is good in his element. Jeff or Victor might sound good with band A and suck with Band B. That would include every great player!

  • bahahaha veery well said

  • VERY well worded!!! FINALLY some sense on youtube!!! :)

  • @Misterantinoodle

except for VINNIE COLAIUTA!!!!!! who can play every kind of music with upmost grace and style.

  • @Rambonbon

He's an amazing sight reader. Did you ever hear Steve Vai's story of Vinnie when he auditioned for Zappa's group? He was given a piece of music titled "Mo 'N Herb's Vacation" to play.

You may have already heard about it. If you haven't, I don't wanna spoil it for you. Steve Vai's quote is in the 'Vinnie Colaiuta" article on wikipedia in the 'career' section.

  • @Misterantinoodle Great comment you are one true musician thank you for the truth

we have way to many youtube idiots on here. comparing musicians.

  • @Misterantinoodle yeaaaaaaah, I gotta disagree. Look up Victor Wooten, The man has been bass player of the year many times. And yeaaaaaah, Victor Wooten...probably one of the best Bassists ever lived, up there with Jaco.

  • It's amazing how great you become....after you die!

  • John who?? Too bad those polls are mostly popularity contests by fans. Jaco was a bass god long before he died. Entwhistle was good but his main contribution was being part of one of the loudest bands in the world.

  • Entwistle has won thousands of polls for the last 5 decades, nothing new there. BASSIST OF THE MILLENIUM was not a popularity contest. The people who voted were other professional bass players and musicians. John who? Look up Bass Player Of The Millenium thats who! cheers

  • Like I said. A contest of popularity more than talent. I know exactly who he is and I've heard plenty of his playing but he doesn't even touch any of these guys in versatility. He gets voted in by other rock bassists who aren't as talented mostly as an influence on their early development of their sound.

  • since when did polls ever tell the truth?

  • since polls were conducted by other musicians and bass players thats when they tell the truth. Also Osama Obama won the election, votes count.

  • doesn't mean they're right, not everyone is "well" informed. What the fuck does Obama have to do with it anyway, all politicians lie for a living.

  • you are pathetic

  • Love the swaying 0.02 - 0.11

  • who won?

  • Us!

  • I think 'jams' like this are cool to see if you know what they're doing, or at least know that they are doing something you can't yet. But I think this is will always be more satisfying to the people playing it, not to the audience. That said, I completely disagree with sciMG, the electric bass is incredibly melodically and percussionally expressive, and I think it's the most dynamic instrument in a band, including this music that he says "people want to see". He must play in a cover band.

  • I think theyre in the here and now but mabye theyre ahead of their time someday when lead bass is not a minority youll understand

  • Oh my bad I'm really arnbassbaritone, but I'm on my dad's account. Sorry

  • Guys just let SciMaster think the way he does. Like I said earlier he won't get far thinking the way he does. People like me and others who will try to follow the revolution of guys like victor, jeff, jaco, etc will be the ones who will push the bass to new heights.

  • lead bass is the way of the future maaannnnnn

  • the way of the future the way of the furute the way of the future the way of the future

  • Hahaha why the hell always so hysterical man, just calm down people.

Lead bass or not, in things music, the mind sets the limit.

Take it easy, bass is a wonderful instrument for multiple purposes.

  • Scimaster you are a ho ass bitch they can play bass however they're feelin. Your a horrible person saying people can't do anything mother fucka. you dont like this, okay you cant change shit because your a BITCH

  • I'm a horrible person because I don't like this shit? You called me a ho ass bitch!! Who talks like that? You are an idiot.

  • Two amazing bassists... I am so glad I found this... These two are a big part of why I play the bass, and it is just so beautiful...

  • That was Sensational!!!

  • SciMaster, if you're really that good, my hat's off to you, but I'd like to see the videos to prove it. And a lot of people listen to Fleck and Vox Humana!

  • I think you just don't understand why people are better than you. If they have the talent, why would they not use it. I don't think you are bass player, because you would you ever want to put limitations on the it if you really played it.

  • First of all an instrument can be whatever you make of it. Second of all there plenty of tuba solos out there. You will never get anywhere thinking the way you do.

  • Comment removed

  • SciMaster, widen your horizons a bit! If you truly believe it's just not that interesting, perhaps you should play something you DO find interesting. Then you might not make such ridiculous comments when faced with virtuosity.

  • I love playing bass more than anything, I face virtuosity every time I pick up the bass . But what good is it, I play bass like one should when making good music that people will want to listen to! How many people listen to Fleck or Vox Humana, not many!

  • "How many people listen to Fleck or Vox Humana, not many!"

That's an odd point to make, I think.

No, not extremely many, but some do... They make a living playing and have listeners, you know. Should we always aim for the larger crowds?

"good music that people will want to listen to!"

Define "good". Define "people". Do you mean music that will earn you a lot of money since a large crowd listens to it? I don't really understand your reasoning.

  • Lead bass sucks?....WHAT??? WHAT??? you dont understand why people would play the instrument like this???

    WHAT???

Just listen to the two of em. They are making music. Two bass players make music. This is music..so creative n so damn fine. They have the percussive side of it coverered..they have the Bass side of it covered..the have the Melody covered. I mean, this is what music is all about. And they Are doing it with only Two bass guitars!!! How awesome is that???

    But Saddly..you dont GET IT!

  • Music CONSTANTLY changes. You have to accept that. Victor Wooten has made some of the most beautiful and original music I've ever heard in my life. Its because he sometimes treats the bass as a lead that his solos become so interesting, with so much range and possibility. I personally think the bass is a beautiful sound, and should be featured. arnbassbaritone is right, you won't get far at all thinking the way you do. And you want to see a tuba solo? Look up "Tuba Solo Carnival in Venice."

  • instruments aren't meant to be played any certain way. its all about the person expressing them self. and to be honest, playing bass just to keep time or have a deeper voice in the music is just a waste of an instrument. explore life more and you might just understand what true music is about.

  • dude what are you saying, gotta keep the low end solid and then cut loose when the time is right. just ask jeff, victor, or pino.

  • by saying that the bass has to keep the low end is just putting restrictions on the instrument. yes it usually does keep the low end. but it doesnt mean that that has to be what it does always.

  • Sounds like Victor's been hanging out with Stanley Clarke--there's some very distinctive phrasing and melodic passages there. (yes I know he has...no need to give the news)

  • Two masters of the electric bass. An honor to get to hear this clip. Thanks to jazzsoulgroovy for posting.

  • They know how to sound awesome but at times theyre dissonant as shit on purpose

  • It's like I've just climbed up mount olympus and beheld the gods themselves "jamming righteously" before being struck from the mountain by a mighty thunderbolt.
