@98SAS4runner the stock engine drives the front wheels, the turbine drives the rear wheels through a custom drive setup. There's no thrust from the exhaust. Check the other video or go to National Geographic's Mad Scientist, thye have video of the van doing a nice burnout on their site somewhere.

I found a guy on the net who built a small shaft turbine from a car turbo and then made his own output shaft turbine and housing. It was very nicely done and he put it on a golf cart like unit he built himself too. It showed him on one of the desert playas somewhere having a ball.

That thing has pretty good acceleration (Its 1/8 mile time is a bit better than the Ford GT). This would be a great idea on a sports car (if you can get around the size issue).

@BlackAstonMartin the transmission lasted 130,000 miles. When the turbine is running the transmission has less work to do. The new transmission should last well past 130,000 miles. The turbine does not drive through the transmission.

Shaft horsepower is what cars use to drive the wheels........ A few shafts, sprockets and a chain and guess what? 136 front wheel horsepower, 575 rear wheel horsepower. 21mpg great on long trips
@markmp3z Actually it sets a new standard for fuel economy. It was specifically built with this in mind. A typical jet dragster/funny car uses 50 gallons of fuel on a run. I use about 8.

@jojsdfsdfsd Jet engines don't have torque acceleration like dragsters, they need to spool up, but they can surely go very fast very fast once they get going!

@EasternMerchant This thing actually makes about 2500 ftlb torque at 0 rpm. it's a free turbine, they make loads of torque. it's also a pretty small jet engine but the free turbine makes it efficient. My friend has a pickup with a thrust jet engine with afterburner, mine is wheel powered. We race, I beat him using only about 3 gallons of fuel to his 30

Remember those rotor blades that hold the helicopter up in the sky? they need lots of SHAFT HORSEPOWER to turn them to hold them up in the air. Shaft horsepower is what cars use to drive the wheels........ A few shafts, sprockets and a chain and guess what? 136 front wheel horsepower, 575 rear wheel horsepower. 21mpg great on long trips

@markmp3z Actually it sets a new standard for fuel economy. It was specifically built with this in mind. A typical jet dragster/funny car uses 50 gallons of fuel on a run. I use about 8.
