@ishouldplayzelda no! the flint wheel is metal. the metal rod below it is ferrocium (flint). the spring below it adds pressure to the flint, and when you spin the wheel, the two scratch each other. and because of the friction, a tiny piece of the flint is sliced off and becomes the sparks

@mashimo712 what? i have a permanent match which has a piece of flint on the shaft which strikes a strip of steel which is on the outside of the case. i've used it a lot and the only things that have degraded are the wick and the steel strip (which now has a deep groove where the flint has been stricken. do you mean to tell me that when a zippo's metal wheel and it's suspiciously reflective "flint" rub together, the "flint" is degraded but the metal strip is what's degraded on my match? amazing

P.S. the rod isn't on the side of the match, it screws into the center and soaks up fuel. the (REFLECTIVE, not black) strip of steel is on the side of the outer casing that the rod goes in. the knurled piece of flint (which is infact black) is on the rod.

@ishouldplayzelda i own 3. they look like mini flasks which you fill with lighter fluid, isopropyl alcohol, etc.

on the side of the flask, there is a bar of ferrocium (flint) glued to the side. the rod has a small a bar on the end with a wick on it. at the end, there are threads and an o- ring to prevent the fluid from evaporating. to light, you simply unscrew the rod from the body and strike the metal rod and ferrocium together to create sparks and light the wick.
