Well, what seperates the Joker from every other villain is how over the top crazy he is. Instead, the Joker in TDK was mostly depicted as a methodical mobster. The comics Joker has a mobster aspect to him, but he is hardly methodical. Instead he's nuts and does things on a whim, which is why he's so unpredictable. Once you stray away from that, the character is no longer an accurate depiction of the real thing.

As a comics fan, I wanted to see the Joker from the comics come to life instead of molding certain traits of the character into a more real life person (I go to movies to get away from real life characters which are all around us every day). Heath hardly laughed as the Joker, whereas Molnar not only laughed a lot, but the style of his laugh mirrors the crazy laugh of the Joker when he killed Jason Todd & did all his other crazy schemes in the comics.

He did hit pretty much all the elements of the Joker, but the thing is they were not in balance when you compare his Joker to the source material. TDK's Joker had too much emphasis on his mobster traits & also portrayed him at times to be someone who calculates his plans & hints them (like he did to those mobsters when he 1st mentioned killing Batman). He wasn't as whimsical (doing things on the fly w/ no hint of his next move) as the real Joker from the comics.

The crazy laugh was also lacking for a lot of the movie. And even though it's less important than the performance, TDK's Joker really doesn't look like the actual Joker in terms of his face/makeup, the long hair (which he's not supposed to have), and even the shape of his face (Joker's supposed to have a long face & pointy chin).

I still love Heath's Joker, but when compared to the source material, Paul Molnar's Joker is the most accurate I've seen so far.

@wtcvidman What you don't seem to understand is that Nolan was attempting to set the character of the joker in a real world scenario, as oppossed to what you see in the comics and graphic novels. Hence the lack of long face, and pointy chin.And yeah. Heath Ledger's portrayal of the joker is original, chilling, and utterly amazing.

I understand that, but based on what you said, we can't really compare him to the source material and say he's the best since Hollywood has never attempted to portray that Joker. With that said, I would definitely say that he is the best Hollywood rendition of the character and I like the way they took characteristics of the source material & put some spins on him. But I still prefer the source material over any other rendition of the Joker.

Best portrayal of the joker in any series of media entertainment, period.

Nothing expresses the Joker's pure and unnoticed madness (as his 'scar' story differs every time) as well as this movie.

But at the same time, the Joker expresses deep connection with the Batman as Joker is a mirror opposite image (what Wayne would have turned out if he ended up killing Joe Chill from the first movie), expressing a borderline affection toward the Batman.
