  • What headphones is he using

  • I love this tutorial!! The only thing I'd like to add is what if a song is in 8/8 instead of 4/4 like bass head? It's counted differently and the beats don't match well with much anything else!! Help please???

  • 1:36 Hahahaa, one of the best parts of this video

  • Hey, it's Davy Crockett xD

  • hahahahah! dude said skeleton people!

  • wtf i think either someone is really really high or just naturally funny lol thanks a lot dj master

  • whats teh song you made mixed?

  • You are the yoda of djs. Your life is djing...........and that is purely awesome!

  • lemons?

  • what CDJ deck is that?

  • @SuperDjFoo CDJ 2000

  • like.. if you conunt on He's voice ^_^

  • Lemons, professional dj equipment

  • Oh snap..

    Thanks for the vid man..

  • when life gives you lemons... you mix dubstep.

  • Sometimes I wonder if John just wakes and bakes and then makes a tutorial? That would be awesome!

  • How you key match these different songs?

  • @AfiqHatta mixed in key!

  • dont know a thing bout dj but freakishly know what hes talkin bout

  • I want that equipment Q.Q but me go not moneys :(

  • I absolutely fucking love when goes completely off piest.

  • Floppy Doggy hat <3

  • lemon mousse?

  • that offbeat juggling was sick. definitely gna try that. Ellaskins keep it up. Any chance of you posting a Dubstep->Drumstep mix? Been trying to figure out how to do that. Thanks brada!

  • The audio bullies song is the Jakwob remix if anyone is wondering :)

  • Dubstep = 70 BPM (Auto-Sync) for the worst DJs with no money to get a software auto sync solution.

  • @cgountanis dubstep is 140 bpm. most softwares you can fix the BPM problem. in traktor just hit "x2" in the grid option underneath the deck

  • @nughaga Dubstep is generally at 140, obviously there is variations like 70BPM and 130-150 BPM

  • @bassline0121 70 BPM and 140 BPM are the same. when DJing and mixing, dubstep is ALWAYS considered 140 (or a few bpm's higher or lower, but not twice as slow) because of reasons like being more precise and being able to transition dubstep with another genre. go on beatport, and there will not be ANY dubstep at 70 bpm

  • @nughaga I'm sure I have a track somewhere that's 70BPM and it's very much dubstep... I'll let you know if i find it

  • @bassline0121 70 and 140 are the exact same to the ear. but for DJing purposes it's always set to 140 bpm. but because of the half-time drums, the auto detect used in programs read that drums hit 70 times a minute, therefore thinking it's 70 bpm, but its always supposed to be 140 for mixing purposes

  • @CDriveOfficial dont know how i missed that, thanks

  • i wanna be your student bro .. how can i do that? :D

  • I as a dubstep deejay only want to mention that knowing the structure of standard dubstep tracks is half the mixing (makes the whole thing smoother and fluent). I recommend dodge & fuski's youtube production tutorial on dubstep structure for that. It's actually quite hard to explain dubstep mixing to others but i think you did well in deliverin the message ;)

    greetz Starrsh

  • Ever since i started to dj about 2 and a half years ago, i have the strange habit of counting music all the time. People look at me weird sometimes but they just don't understand >.>

    Thanks as always J

  • death by beat counting????

  • Great tutorial, love them all.

  • Track names?

  • @MegaBedooo Read the description.

  • 2 CDJ 2000 + DJM 2000 = a lot of money :)

  • @giovaShock im guessing its his profession so its understandable

  • @giovaShock It's cool, cause with the CDJ2000s and the DJM2000 you could turn them into the most expensive digital dj controller/soundcard ever with just a few USB cables. Versatile pieces of equipment, they are..

  • Is it wrong to have the two songs on the same beat, but the counting is messed up??? Also, how do I prevent what i'm playing from sounding like one big cluster ****?

  • Mojito Time maybe!!!!!

  • great

  • maybe you should re act the Chad Jackson 1988 DMC world finals where he scratches with an American Football, except you should do it with a Lemon!

  • Would love if you could do a tutorial for some DJ Yoda style mixing <3

  • He is right, I learned to count perfectly in only 1 day. To be honest I was counting bars on a beegees track my mom was playing. After you get really used to counting you can sometimes feel it coming without counting. At least sometimes I do

  • THANK U THIS WILL HELP SOOOOO MUCH

  • ive been counting music for aslong as i can remember... before i even started dj'ing :')

  • merry Christmas john

  • Cool video, once again. You are the best, and all the stuff I know today, I think I've learned from you, j. I got my first mixer and CD players for this Xmas, and damn it's so fun to be able to always drag a mix.

Like the counting tip you give ;) It actually works, been doing this for quite a while.

  • EAT BREATHE LIVE DIE AND SH!T DJ... lol :) merry xmas

  • dude, tuto killer , but install good camera pliz .m crismaz!!

  • Thanks J.

  • Welcome to the ellaskins tutorial on dubstep production

Typically a tempo of 140 beats per minute is selected

  • nice mix songs from you

  • What is your setup here man?

  • nice pioneer ;)

  • why is there hairspray and lemons on your turntables.....

  • its only man (jakwob remix)

  • i am a DJ myself and I got the counting part right away, however.

it is really anoying when I go out with my friends as I can hear every tiny little detail / mistake the DJ does / makes. (I am not saying they're bad DJs).

It has almost gotten so far that I cannot "enjoy" the music anymore as I am hearing every detail in every song.

My friends say: Just don't think about it, just enjoy the music.

Which is easier said than done because it goes automaticaly, just like he says.

    Any tips? :P

  • @WNxRadeon get shitfaced? nah, but i know exactly how it feels, it's really annoying..

  • @WNxRadeon ....go deaf

  • @WNxRadeon ixes with no mistakes sound to robotish for me. imo it needs to be balanced so that ppl hear you are good and also hear u are obi not auto syncing. u know when u have two tracks synced and just let them play, and 1 will slightly start to roll off. spinning isn't about skill. its about style and the music u play. just enjoy the trax being played and don't over analyze it. of course thats unless the dj is a total wanker and cn't even count to 4

  • @vladimir4200 I agree that a mix should not be perfect and I don't mind little mistakes,

but sometimes for example I ask my friends "did you hear that click?" (amplifier for example).

And they didn't because they have not developed an ear for little details in music.

It's not only the clicks but also other things. I don't know how to explain it.

  • J ive always wondered whats on that slipmatt with NB on it, ive seen them in loadsa videos and you had em, since the early 90ies

  • Probaly noone gonna read or care about this,

But if only get 1 person to read it i feel it's worth it.

I'm trying to be a Dj like a million else...

I'm maybe no diffrent yet, but it would mean the world to me to get a decent following on youtube and know that i can entertain alot of people out? there.

If you ever read this, please give me a "THUMBS UP" so other people can see this message too.

it's so simple to maybe make my dream come true. :)) thank you very much

  • @ellaskins ok thanks for the advice

  • dubstep allday! happy holidays

  • what are the tunes? I mean what remixes, cant really find them

  • Haha whats with the random 3 lemons?lmao.

  • You would think because he is from the UK he would actually be playing the Sub bass driven stuff not this American Bro stuff.

  • nice vid,

the old ''wakky'' style off vids are amazing!

  • how do you aford all this pioneer gear? r u sponsored?

  • Merry Christmas Jon!

  • Wow thats how i started mixing dubstep

  • That sounds like the jakwob remix of only man ;)

  • Wonderful!!!! Thanks for sharing. Regards from brazil !

  • love it j merry xmas to you all

  • Thanks for sharing, need to point that out. Youre awesome!

  • Woahhh! Thanks, Mate! Merry Christmas!!!

  • keep in mind, using the breakdowns of most dubstep songs will allow you to introduce another track and have a good transition. in a mix its not about playing the full song, but sort of telling a story :]

  • nice lemons :)

  • yayy this is what i've been waiting for from @ellaskins :D

  • *dubstep

  • what are your cue points?

  • im a drummer so counting is fucking easy for me

  • Practical man thnx

  • "Well...

    I'm not gonna answer that."

    Win.

  • I've played drums for 8 years, so counting is pretty easy for me. Whenever my friends ask me what genre a track is, and they can't decide if it's dubstep or drum and bass, I can't understand how they don't just instantly know.

My friend even confuses electro house with dubstep. I can't understand how that's possible.

  • @xSonsofNerox Same man, some of my friends are like that too, playing drums makes mixing soooo easy. You know pretty much every beat of every measure at all times haha

  • Since most Dubstep is at 140 BPM theres not much worrying about beatmatching at all, In my opinion most important, when mixing Dubstep is watching the Structure of the Tunes. Dubstep is like the most structured Electronic Dance music, and it is rather easy to distinguish between the different parts. So when Mixing Dubstep Try counting the Phrases and structure your Mixes together with the Tunes, it makes it really easy to learn stuff like double drops for example :)

    Cheers! Practice and Enjoy :)

  • @LPHarbinger dance music is the same way. 128-130 bpm is so easy to count

  • @wwiilljohnson You're right , however in Dubstep itsnore liek an unwritten law to have 140 BPM, whearas in for example House, it can really vary from 122 up to like 132.

  • @LPHarbinger exactly sir! It seems like within the dubstep genre there are so many different flavors of drops, its more important to get dubstep songs that match the same style of drop. kinda like the differences between chill hip-hop/rap and dirty south hip-hop/rap :]

  • @LPHarbinger i most of the time just gidemyself with the soundwaves shape :A

  • @LPHarbinger Yea, best thing to do is to be simple with mixing it too but at the same time just dont cut straight in or fade straight out. plan it out, build up drop, then keep doing that for the remainder of the evening throwing some breakdowns if your crowd isnt responsive

  • Merry Christmas Jonathan! I was going to ask you to make a tutorial about dubstep! You are reading my mind! hahah!

  • Thanks for all your great tutorials, i really like them and find them VERY usefull and easy to learn from.

    Merry Christmas

  • Awesome video, merry xmas bro.

  • I love your husky hat!

  • he's extreamly right

i dont have to count now it automaticlly coming out

  • dubstep is all one word lol

  • I have the same hat !!

  • I do the same thing with my Dubstep mix but not really bringing the next track in at the Outro. Sort of during the break, after the chorus (drop).

    Have a listen:

    soundcloud (dot) com/kelvinyap9/dubstep-mix-1/

  • How can you tell which beat is "1" or "2" etc. I can count but i can't tell which beat to start on

  • @bishbashboshjt find a point in the music with a change.... then count from there.... it will come to you very naturaly in time, merry Christmas :)

    j

  • @bishbashboshjt almost all sorts of electronic music start the beat with a low kick

  • @bishbashboshjt Usually the first beat is a kick, and the second beat is a snare.

    1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4

    is sort of like

    kick-snare-kick-snare, kick-snare-kick-snare

...with some bits and pieces in between them (like hi-hats etc.)

  • @bishbashboshjt also, with dubstep, beat 1 is pretty much always a kick. That should help.

  • @bishbashboshjt learn basics in musical theory )

  • great tut,thanks allot!

  • lol why do u have lemons on ur deck? i really want to know XD!

  • you were far too high when you recorded this lol

  • 3:30 haha

  • my sister has that hat :D

  • could you do a video on headphones?

  • Already made it a habit to count whatever song I hear LOL

I personally count Dubstep in half time :)

  • thanks! merry christmas!

  • f yeah!

  • Nice one, Merry Christmass all :D

  • 8th

  • This is extremely helpful to me! Thanks Johnathan! Also, I don't know if you have used it but what is your opinion on the Hercules DJ Console RMX. I'm looking to get it as my first set of turntables.

  • i'm 6th

  • Nice :D

  • Im the first one to enjoy this tutorial :D
