I saw this production at the Met. Ramey is my GOD! I've seen him in several Met productions and as far as I'm concerned, all take a back seat to him.
@Vildachaiya Ramey has always been the perfect Don Giovanni, with his silken voice, charisma, and stage presence. As you say, all of the other Giovanni's are sitting in the back seat while Ramey occupies the front seat all alone.
I saw this when it was live - I was 13 and completely in love with both Ramey and Upshaw, and Levine was my hero. I have yet to see a better production. I think my mum has the VHS somewhere. Thanks for posting in such good quality!
Damn this is the absolute best production I have ever seen of Don Giovanni. Everything was perfect. The casting was the best EVER. Greatness on one stage. Moll, Ramey, Furlanetto, Upshaw. God why can't we get a dvd of this. They should have released it just for the fact that moll was in it. The Karajan was good but compared to this..It doesnt really stand a chance. I want a DVD. We should make a petition and send it to the metropolitan opera. Or stand outside levine's house and demand it LOL
@LifeJuice90 I am SO MUCH with you on this one ;-) I did write to the Met 2 days ago, asking them if they planned a relase soon of this spectacular and beautiful production. They answered it wasn't planned (sic) but that my " thoughts about a DVD release of this production" would be forwarded to the "appropriate department for review".
So let's write !!! They might hear us, one of these days !
Basses and Bass-baritones like Ramey, Pinza, Siepi, London, etc. always make for the best Don Giovannis. It's the depth and sauve of the bass / bass-baritone voice that best suite the role of the seductive Don.
This is wonderful. Two favorites. I have Ramey's Giovanni but he may be in even better voice here--is that possible? So rich. Thanks for such a great upload--sound quality couldn't be better!
Yes, this production needs to be on a DVD. I remember I recorded it on a VHS. When I played it back, something happened electronically.:-) Just as Donna Elvira (Carol Vaness) jumped in to spoil Don Giovanni's little "adventure", the video went static and I couldn't watch the rest of my video. I believe the late, great Jerry Hadley was in this one, too. 4 of my favorites - Upshaw, Hadley, Ramey, Vaness, I've met Dawn - what a great and courageous lady.I hope to meet some of the others someday.
Some felt that Ramey's Don was somewhat lacking in character. I'm not so sure. I think he was very well suited for the role. Certainly charismatic and charming, and I don't think anyone can dispute his terrific voice.
@raigekimaru I'm a lyric tenor, once in a rehearsal for Sonnambula I decided to mark an octave down in the middle of Prendi, my soprano immediately got all swoony causing the on lookers to explode into light laughter. There is just something sexy about a guy singin low.... damn Bass-Baritones! =D
Wonderful selection Onegin, I thank you warmly to post it. One is almost reluctant to say, but one has to: This is truly one of the best sung duet I've heard, not least because the soprano is also superb. Those two voices melt into each other, just the way Mozart imagined it.
One of the best singers ever lived!!!!! Technique, voice color, diction, range, acting, flexibility in switching between roles, composers, eras, languages.... PERFECT!!!!!!!
RAMEY =PERFETTO DON GIOVANNI!!!!! Voce, interpretazione, aspetto ,lo rendono un Don giovanni INEGUAGLIABILE!!!!!

I like this version with Upshaw even better than Ramey and Battle in the DVD conducted by Karajan.

he doesn't pull his Ds back in his throat like other singers do with this piece. power is much more seductive than breathiness.

It's just perfect. And so full of life! Good Lord, they MUST make a DVD of it, they can't leave us posterity with a VHS tape only!!!

Beautiful and powerful voice by this Giovanni, but as lover, he's "wooden" enough - too serious...
I think he's better to be listened than to be seen :)

Depends on the taste. He wouldn't have to ask ME twice! ;)

Well, Don G. was pretty serious about his lovemaking.
