Ugh, the ancient warriors (Hwa Rang) of Silla would weep if they saw how far martial arts has degenerated toward becoming so focused on beauty rather than practicality.
The founder of TAEKWON-DO, Gen Choi Hong Hi, trained TAEKYON and Shotokan Karate, and Taekwon-do was born under the influence of these two arts (among some other martial arts, like Subak). There are in fact a lot of Karate influence on traditional Taekwon-do.
The belt system of TaeKwonDo we know today was created in 1973 with the formation of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). Prior to this, each style would have different ways of indicating rank. This is an example of a traditional style of Taekwondo.
@firebat71 This belt system was created by General Choi Hong Hi of the Oh Do Kwan, and became a standard on foundation of the Korae TaeKwon-do Association in 1961, with Gen Choi as president. He fouded ITF in 1966 and this belt system became official on all countries were TaeKwon-do was practiced. WTF was formed 6 years later and adopted ITF's belt system.
It is Taekwondo, predating the Taegeuk and even the Palgwe poomsae or Kukkiwon. This form and many others were taught at the Chung Do Kwan before the word "Tae Kwon Do came to be. These forms were taught by Grandmaster Duk Sung Son, former kwan jang of the Chung Do Kwan.
@jsstevens Yes, this proves the heavy Karate influence on TaeKwon-Do. Gen Choi got this form out of the ITF because he wanted the new martial art to be as Korean as possible.
This form is truly a traditional taekwondoform. It is almost identical to the Karate Kata Tekki\naihanchi and as we all know before the other pattern sets like WTF Taegeuk\palgwe\chang hon (ITF) etc were invented they used Karate Kata.
true. more people need to realize that too. but also reckognize that the korean arts also have their own heritage which was added to, and blended with japanese karate do. and have since evolved into something very korean. be it tang soo do (soo bahk do) or taekwondo

how you wear your belt has nothing to do with how you train.

se nota mucho la influencia del karate japones en esta forma. esta es la forma coreana del kata tekki (karate shotokan) o naihanchi. interesante.

@jsstevens
What?
This is an old Okinawan kata Takki 3. GM Won Kuk Lee trained in Okinawa as most of the great Koreans did.
