One of my favorite songs from my favorite album ever. And yet I've never heard it played on a radio station. It's a shame because two generations have never heard it and probably never will unless they buy the CD. (or find it by chance here on Youtube)
There's just simply too many great songs on one album here ,.... Overture, Amazing Journey (Sparks), The Hawker, Acid Queen, Christmas, Cousin Kevin, Sensation, etc,..oh yeah,..and this one - Whole album is epic classic -
Saw Roger perform this a few weeks ago. First time I'd ever seen any of them live. This song in particular is so awesome because as great as it is you just can't wait for "listening to you..." to kick in.
@jethrotull420 ohh, my god, one of my old nurses from work told me about how she used to spend many a mornings from dusk to dawn with the bird chirpin and The Who playing
@TomFromJersey No, not at all. I love this song too. Sometimes the best songs are the ones there were not released as singles or get almost no airplay.
I see a lot of folks commenting "This is my fav part of the LP" I almost agree, how ever I like the refrain at the very end of the lp where they repeat the "Listening to you" part over and over till it fades... greatest ending to ANY rock and roll LP... ever.
The songs on this album are arranged so much better than the ones in the movie. This song is just ridiculous in the movie, like a joke. I love Pete Townshend, but to me the film just wasn't much of anything, this is the true Tommy and forever will be.
The movie would have been better if they used the original recordings. This song (and most of the others) are so much better on the original album than on the soundtrack.
Having said that, I love Elton's version of Pinball Wizard.
@GoblinGirl Elton's version of Pinball Wizard was great, so was Tina Turner's version of Acid Queen. Other than that I agree, the album versions were worlds better than the movie versions.
There is a scene in GaGa's Bad Romance video where she's got a black outfit and black blind-people glasses on and she's looking at herself in the mirror and some articles said that she was referencing this movie. I can't find any scenes on Youtube that show Tommy in the mirror, is that really part of the movie? What is he wearing in that scene?
@OoMASEoO Nevermind, I saw the movie. There is a section of the movie where he stares at the mirror for a while, but he's wearing regular clothes. And no glasses.
@OoMASEoO It's more likely it was the album she was referencing, since the album is really what most people are referring to when talking about "Tommy".
If you ever get a chance, check out the Tommy Demos. Very cool stuff. This song had additional lyrics that I suppose were too icky for mainstream, so didn't make it into the movie or the album: "I've kicked him, licked him, rubbed him, hit him, loved him. Everything in vain to let him know."
Aha! Thanks for that--those lyrics were in the "reggae Tommy" (with Avery Schreiber!!)(not as crap as it sounds actually, ha ha) and always wondered where they came from, thanks!
I am glad to see that I am not the only one who thinks this song is the best song on the album. My older sister gave this album to me for Christamas when I was in the 9th grade. I played it till the grooves wore out. It's still my favorite album of all time. Peace.
You are so right! I remember my brother giving me this cassette for a Christmas present I was only six years old and I actually wore out the cassette mostly because of this song.
dude...my favorite part has to be the "go to the mirror boy." i think they could've looped that part for a couple of minutes and i still would've loved it. lol

Severe necrosis of the face? "Go to the mirror, boy!"
