If anything could be offered as proof that the debate is simply between reasonable people and unreasonable people it is the title of this debate. Any reasonable person could not seriously be for the motion that atheism is a fundamentalist movement. Just because religious people are trying to rebrand their god as some sort of human consciousness does not change the fact that religion is a force that dumbs down people's intellect and suffocates rationality.
I'm probably gonna get flamed but, I'm christian. I believe god and jesus. But I also believe that people can be jewish, muslim, athiest, whatever. Nobody knows, but we all believe.
Oh please, people should thinking that religion answer "why" questions. Religion answers no questions, it does not seek the truth. Rather, it is philosophy that might be accountable for that, but not religion.
I am an atheist, but I'm sad that the discussion in the comments is still between two fundamentalist sides - yes, also the atheists. It is very easy to point at creationism and therefore say religion is wrong. I understand you may feel cornered by religious fundamentalists throwing scripture at you, but as long as you don't rise above that, you're not doing a better job at the debate than they are.
Hey you abandon Gods laws, don't expect to benefit from his morals of his laws. The times of the past of HISTORY of the bible warned us against this and its going to come to pass again, mankind slaughtered mankind for any reason back then. You have given your authority to the devil by default by denying God, this sucks for you now, but atheist asked for it now youre getting it. No God means now reason to be good to each other, look at the monster you have created now.
@Lavere2009 You said "Hey you abandon Gods laws, don't expect to benefit from his morals of his laws."
You must be referring to stoning your unruly children to death, or possibly murdering anyone who works on the sabbath. Of course, we can't forget that the Bible clearly indicates that you should utilize discretion when beating your slaves. If you do beat them so severely that they die....make sure they last "a day or two" so that you have done nothing wrong. God prefers a lingering death.
What are the strong points of faith in a god, "the grand perhaps?" Really, is that an argument? He suggest that "perhaps" should count for, or against, an argument. Frankly, I've heard enough.
This is drivle ultimately. "Kind"? THe "kind" excuse is used all too often. When Skeptics refute a particular claim, they are responding to the madness with soberity, not foundamentalism. It's not "foundamentalist" to NOT be convinced of a certain claim, it is rational. The God this ass hat is discribing here is the pretended image God of true righteousnous, rather than the ilteral God that has been duely refuted.
Holy fuck! I actually liked the priest!!! I am so sick of this new atheism bullshit. Sorry, but as long as fundies exist, I will be a quote new atheist/fundamentalist atheist/any other name based on a false comparison.
I say I liked the priest because he didnt come off as a total idiot or asshole. Iv seen this point made, but we always address this. It may not be a deity you believe in, but it sure is a deity fundies believe in, and that is what we are addressing.
As for art and stuff. No one denies that stuff. But so what, disbelief has been inspiration for a lot of bands, and art, and films. What do fundies do? ITS EVIL! The children! What we do at your art? Its art, its beautiful. Beliefs are irrational.
Fundies speak out against art work done by atheism, or just plain fantasy. Calling it godless secularism. As if its a bad word. Do I do that? Does Dawkins, or Myers do that? NO! They say your fundamentalist beliefs can be dangerous.
Its a total false comparison. Criticizing and mocking beliefs is not the same as rejecting factual evidence, trying to take away rights, etc.
What we fundie atheist do is stand against divisiveness, and support secularism, and since fundies are so divisive they see secularism as a bad immoral thing. Fundies want to enforce their morality onto us, and since secularism is FAIR to everyone no matter what, they hate secularism, yet we fundie atheist seem to support fairness and having everyone protected from divisiveness. The atheist fundie accusation is absurd. Completely absurd. Blows my mind.
This priest is so ignorant, this is why Dawkins wont debate some people
About 6mn in, hes saying atheism needs theism
In a sense it does. But only in the sense that we wouldnt have an atheist movement if not for religions hold on our daily lives
Atheism is simply a lack of belief in a god. A person is born an atheist in the sense that you dont believe in something until your told about it or through experience, come to a conclusion
If we didnt have theism, we wouldnt put thought to the issue
Well, OF COURSE. This guy, this priest, he's trying to argue for the kind of god which cannot be argued against, and he's basically strawmanning the atheist side here.
If the theists cannot produce a god which one can verify exists, one for which empirical evidence can be presented, then their side fails even before it begins. It really is that simple, and this guy doesn't even address that, instead making an argument from beauty.
He seems to be making the claim that they wouldnt have been able to do what they do without god, but that doesnt account for the talents of atheist artists of all kinds.
Atheist philosophers.
Discounts all of asia, much of which had varying philosophy and religion, which were nothing like the western theism.
Oh...so poets have a special insight into what 'god' means or is? Really?! Atheists do not attack weaker arguments, there has been no strong argument put forward for god, period.
Problem is, everything that criticises christianity is fundamentalism or militarism.
The bible says none must question it.
You go to hell if you blaspheme.
Your a fool if you deny god.
With all that, to a christian, how can anybody that criticises it not be a militant, or fundamentalist.
The atheist is ignoring so much evidence, blinded by something. Such strong hatred (if you critique the word of god, you must hate him) makes a person by definition fundamental
What about 1 Thessalonians 5:21 where it says "Test everything. Hold on to the good."?
We are supposed to question things, even the existence of God.
Many atheists I know are good people, better than a lot of people that claim to be Christian. Some even wish there was a God but don't think there is. Where is the hate in that?
The ironic thing though is that your lack of willingness to question things is, by definition, fundamentalism. How can you ever learn without questioning?
@HerrSchnabeltier Actually, you couldn't be more wrong. Fundamentalism, or more specifically, fundamentalist religion, is about adhering to the fundamental tenets of a belief system, usually in opposition to more liberal interpretations of your religion. Atheism, by definition, is the rejection of a claim and NOT a belief system. There are NO fundamental tenets to hold to.
Atheism in itself is just one belief/lack of belief but a person can certainly be an atheist and have a fundamentalist attitude about their belief system. Anyone can be dogmatic.
@HerrSchnabeltier I will admit the term "militant atheists" or even "irrational atheists", but "fundamental atheists"? I was under the impression fundamentalism has to do with total adherence to a certain set of ideas, but since these ideas are not concentrated in any single text I have problems welcoming the term. I mean, atheist is quite hard to define plainly much less a fundamental branch. I don't say we cannot be irrational, or even rude douchebags, but fundamentalists? Explain, please.

He acts as if atheists only criticise christian gods.
Its absurd.
The most popular atheists do tend to focus on christianity because its dominant in the english speaking world, and the famous ones are english.
But muslim is covered by some of them, judaism on occasion.
They discuss skepticism over the gods of the past, scientologies god, etc...

at about 4 minutes he calls on the names of alot of famous people to make the case for the validity of christianity.
The list is meaningless because those people were most likely raised in christian societies and had no reason to go against their beliefs.
Its not like they had an apiphany and found the answer to life.
No, they just always believes in it, and went about their usual growth with that heavily incorporated.
Its not easy to break free of theism when your indoctrinated at birth.

I think it is pretty dumb to say that a worldview is fundamentalism when fundamentalism is an attitude, not a specific set of beliefs.
There are some irrational fundamental atheists and some irrational fundamental theists.
There are also plenty who honestly disagree though, although apparently some people don't see that.
