@Yanitsaros Hm.... perhaps he's not a god. However, he might play with a goddess ;D lol // and perhaps they are more warm and loving then some folks protray them as. *smiles innocently* ^^ *giggles*
@Yanitsaros Yeah, people do tend to exaggerate far too much. Because we as a speices tend to be highly more simulated rather then rational. A lot of the time. Not to long ago on the History Channel they did say something similair about the Minitor. That he was protrayed as more for a racial profile rather then a true monster from folklore. But no one can still explain why there was even a mazed built for possiable execution. Turning people mad, etc.
This was well made and a little sad. I can relate to these experinces myself. Because I have done it. But I'm not a mean person, but these are very tough obstacles to over come. When its all about survival. An who you can possiably trust.
It is amazing how the Greek explanation about this from the ancient times is the same as from Buddhism, Sufism, New Age Spirituality, and so on, you ca read it in the books from the Masters of the Far East, you can hear it in courses, you can hear it in psychology, and it is absolutely true.
It helps to have personifications, as here is Pan. Personifications are also there in fairy tales, fairy tales are wise.
In Wisdom there is Nature and the natural act, and there is a Higher Nature (Metaphysics), with the Super natural.
We are all on our way to go through Nature, and being natural, to grow naturally in the Higher Nature, to be connected with the Higher Self, the Super Natural.
A development of evolutionary human processes, which bring being psychic, paranormal, trance states in several levels.
In that phase we experience that all life is ONE, HARMONY and LOVE.
Pan must have a lot of enemies in the meantime, and yes, I know him very very well, he hurted me a lot, deeply, and he broke my heart into pieces, but I will never bow for him in the way he bowed for the revenge, he is the God of Revenge and not of Love, as Zeus is. When I bow for him he really won and I don't offer him the victory.
I will meet him many times more, because I fall in love easily, not because of his influences, no, there are wonderful men on earth.
The only weapon against him is looking him into the eye, streight and calm, and tell him with the expression in it that it has been wonderful, that I thank him for all the beauty, and that it is obvious time to go on, because eternal love does not exist on earth, to find a new love, and yes, I know that he will find me again, but he cannot take my pleasure....
He is the one who lost and looses everything again and again, revenge is an act of fear itself, of weakness, of being in hatred, not even knowing what real Love is. I don't pity him, he may find out himself.
Hmmm, I am a follower of the school of thought that preaches the works of literature to be properly enjoyed in the language they were conceived. Would you rather read Conan Doyle in english or in french? As for the footnotes, they exist in greek publications as well, they make up about 1/5 of each book. If you are interested, I would suggest Kaktos publications, they have pretty much published every single work of ancient Greek and hellenist authors
Yes, you are right, modern historians offer us directly the fruits of their in depth study, analysis and cross examination.
BUT reading the actual works of the ancient authors offers a unique, a mystical feeling. Excerpts like the epilogue of Xenophon's Hellenica, Thoukidides' observations on the Corcyrean civil war or Philopoemen's quotes in Plutarch have been engraved in my memory from the first moment I read them many years ago! Most books of modern scholars I have read just feel desaturated
You are well-read too. But I have noticed that you put more emphasis on the works of modern academics than the ancient authors. Why is that? Are they friends of your father from the college?
I will take that as a compliment hahaha! Seriously now, Polyaenos from the Greeks and Frontinus from the Romans are the biggest names in their field, epitomy of ancient warfare, definitely not obscure.
Personally, I have always wondered where did the myth of the ancient (by the ancient's standards) greek campaign in India stem from.
Remember, even Alexander adhered to that myth and was quoted saying in Corinth he wished to see victorious Greeks dance in India again.
Was it a retroactive application of the romantisized hellenistic historiography's vivid imagination, or was there actually a factual core beneath all the hype?
Polyaenos delivers the following interesting verse:
"Dionysus' general was Pan. He was the first to come up with the battle formation he named phalanx and he gave shape to the left and the right wing[κέρας], hence they portray him as two horned[κερασφόρος]. He was also the first to instill fear in his enemies by means of cunning and trickery. Dionysus found himself into a deep forested gorge, when the scouts announced that a myriad strong enemy force had camped above them.
Dionysus was frightened, but Pan was not and when the night came, he ordered the troops to shout a war-cry as strong as they could. Indeed, the troops cried out aloud and as the rocks and the gorge echoed, they gave they impression to their enemies of being far larger in numbers, so they in turn retreated in terror. For the shake of Pan's strategem, Echo is titled friend of Pan in our hymns and we name the irrational night fears that strike armies Panics."
Did you know that Pan, as subordinate of Dionysus, campaigned in India and coined the term panic for the irrational fears striking armed camps by using a strategem against the surrounding massive Indian army? LOL
Even Polyaenos (a fellow Macedonian yeah!!!) believed that crap and included it in his work of Strategemata, hahaha
