oh yes. Ive ridden many R46s and there was one with a really high pitched ding dong and another with a really low pitched ding dong. Then there are those that ding dong really fast or really slow. Its crazy
That new yawk for ya. I am a native new yorker. if you just moved here the first thing you do is learn the subways and the 5 boroughs landmarks if not you will get lost.
Nope. Although the tune was first used in 1971 on R44 cars in New York (ones on the A line), the sound was then used in 1976 on WMATA (Washington Metro) Rohr trains.
UPDATE: Washington Metro has replaced all their door chimes with a marimba sound and a commentary to step back. So NOW this sound is unique to NYC Subways.
LOL

I've ridden on a South Ferry bound (1) train, the doorchime was exactly the same! We got off @ Rector st. Station near Battery Park :D

The chime used for the closing doors sounds exactly like a doorbell.
Is it unique to NYC Transit's subway cars?

Uh-huh.
Is the marimba chime on the NYC Transit Smart Cars (R142, R142A, R143, R160A, R160B)?

hey, I used to go to that station every weekend! It's awesome to walk up the stairs and see the 2 A trains.
