I completely agree with what those men are doing. Last time I was there, I simply couldn't believe how rude, disrespectful and just plain stupid most tourists were. Some were running after them, shoving their camera in the maiko's face. I think next I'll actually do the same with the tourists, see how they like it.
Those old bastards are necessary, because in some neighbourhoods, maiko and geiko have had their clothing tugged on to stop them so some jerk can take their picture.
the maikos appreciate what those old men are doing. As stated some tourists have no manner (in terms of traditional japanese manner) and act like Geishas are like Micky mouse from Disneyland...Those old men probably arent thinking of themselves as self important but rather trying to protect the japanese tradition...I personally went to kyoto and talked with some residence. I had the impression they respect Maikos and their tradition/manner.
Of course tourists should be respectful of the maiko and geiko, but that doesn't give CIVILIANS the right to impose themselves on tourists.
Here's a comparison: celebrities get hassled sometimes by people. HOWEVER, a citizen's brigade of celebrity protectors? not ok.
until celebs call the police or hire a security detail, too bad.
the same can be said of maiko. if some old man got in my business and tried to keep me from taking a picture, I would give him a piece of my damn mind.
yeah i understand ur point but the maikos did say it is disturbing and doesnt like it. Also I feel Geishas are quite different from celebrities. I'm sure these old guy probably talked to the geishas about the whole bodyguarding issue and its not so much that they are trying to get in ur way but rather to protect the tradition. Geishas in old days were not poked around or their obi pulled on by others. I just feel they like to keep it like the old days.
@chinpokomon661 actually in a lot of biography of geiko it mentions incedents of these sorts, including the tabacco thing which makes me think that this man is saying something that has not happened in a long while. It is just that now there is even more attention to maiko and by tourists. Of course many tourists are disgustingly rude, but it is also easy to single out foriegn tourists, when Japanese tourists and even jimoto japanese are doing disturbing things of equal proportion from old days.
@ewoodham Maikos are not celebrities. They have their own works at Ochaya that's why they're in hurry when they walk. But a lot of foreigners misunderstand their work and the existence of Maiko or Geiko. The Maiko said that some of them throw a cigarette into Maiko's neck and it was really scared her. Those men are not just civilians, but they are owners of traditional Ochaya where Maiko works at.

Those tourist are a pain, was trying to get out of the theatre after the last Miyako Odori of the day. You just could not get around them.
I think way the old guys are doing is good at least the maiko and geiko are not get swamped by snappers.

I'm so glad I never had to deal with pushy tourists OR the old bastards that call themselves their bodyguards.

those men are more pushy than the tourists themselves. they are self important and have no right to blockade anyone.
