  • French horn and oboe ( french too ) are both new in jazz and both tricky to play !

Both instruments provide a marvellous sound ...

So this is a performance !

    Jazz is moving .

  • Simply sweet,man.

  • I go to an arts high school in las vegas, and I'm the jazz horn player there. I am so thankful for having an open minded director when it comes to having non-traditional instruments incorporated into the jazz world...Jazz is my first love over classical, and because of those close minded people out there, I'm going to have to major strictly in classical for college next year because jazz is MUCH more risky for a horn player. :( I'm double majoring in jazz compos. to revolutionize the jazz world.

  • @Universlmusician good for you! Wille Ruff once told me to play as many different kinds of music, as much of the time, as I could. Just keep at it and do a LOT of listening! Good luck!

  • @mtaylorjazz Thanks! I Will! Oh and I meant to say this, but I didn't have enough room in my previous comment. You played beautifully, and I am inspired, as a jazz horn player, by your performance. :)

  • @Universlmusician Thank you!

  • @Universlmusician the point of jazz is "defy all preconceptions," show em something original. sadly, i've never had an open minded director, but i love the idea of something cool and different like that. be sure and give me a taste of your first album haha

and i'm not being sarcastic either, jazz=risks

  • while I can appreciate this song, I didn't personally like it, the tone seemed to switch between rough around the edges and sweet tone, and the solo between long blues tones and just slightly dissonant chords. It seemed as if mr. taylor couldn't decided if he wanted to do blues or bebop, and what came out I didn't care for. decent playing however, I can tell he is an excellent horn player.

  • Thanks for all the great comments, everyone! I agree that school jazz bands should let the Horns play - when I was in school I played trombone parts and was lucky enough to have a director that was open to the idea...

  • @mtaylorjazz, I remember, back in the day, after I took on a solo on I-don't-remember-what, a young girl saying to me, "I didn't think horns could play jazz." My response was something like, "It's the person who plays jazz, not the horn."! Libby Schwartz, horn player.

  • @njlizful Great answer, Libby!

  • This makes me wish in our jazz band in school they allowed French horns...

  • sounds in a similar way to dave brubecks fujiyama! i love it

  • Yes! Jazz french horn is great stuff :D

  • i've never heard jazz horn before. unique, but very tasteful!

  • I really enjoyed your music. You made it look so easy.....loved your expression and phrasing, man....Thanks 4 sharing!

  • @skuzme Thank you for checking us out. We had a great time at this concert and are looking forward to doing lots more!

  • @psuggmog: Thanks for your beautiful comment and for taking the time to give us a listen!

  • some good stuff!

hey can you give me the name to the intro jazz song in the beginning of this?

  • @woterx: HI! The track that's playing under the opening visuals is called, "A Risk I Take" and it's from my upcoming CD to be released in the spring.

  • Mark, great stuff! What mouthpiece are you using now?

  • @gwhorn007: In this video I'm playing a custom mouthpiece made for me by Greg Black many years ago. It seemed best suited to this particular horn.

  • Man, the horn panned more to the right is really irratating when watching this video when he is on the left lol...

  • @GamingPrower : LOL, I agree. Everytime I hear a bit of these it takes some time to get used to all over again. I'm very proud of the performances, though!

  • @GamingPrower you are right, it is. lol

  • @mmmusicmmDallas Thanks!!

  • Mark! How fantastic!!! xoxo

  • @kiku333 Thank you very much, Ms. Kiku! Hopefully there'll be lots more to come.
