Well, the Titans got their just deserts for this one. Just as the New England Patriots got their justice in '07 for taping the other sideline in week 1, the Tennessee Titans did not get the Super Bowl title.
@JakeNyg25 really? i'm a diehard NFL fan, can never get enough of it, and yet I never knew that you needed 2 knees down in the CFL. that's interesting.
to anyone with a brain and a set of working eyes, this was a FORWARD LATERAL. The music city screwjob. Glad that weak ass team lost in the superbowl. RIP Titans.
Wasa clean Lateral. You can tell the ball was thrown in front of the white line and was got a inch before or if not on the white line. So That was indeed a GREAT CALL. Go titans woot!
@BaconFrisbee "It's where the ball is to where the ball goes".
He extends his arm across the 25 (by a decent amount, maybe just under 1/2 a yard), and throws, and the ball is caught quite close to the 25 yard line (maybe 1/4 of a yard).
It doesn't matter where the players are. It's all about the ball.
@JakeNyg25 Uhm... are you serious? One knee IS DOWN in any league. One elbow, or anything above your ankle is also down. Not to mention, that's all irrelevant. On that superbowl play his WHOLE DAMN BODY was down before he stretched the ball into the endzone.
I think what you are referring to is what constitue a complete pass when a player is falling/going out of bounds. In college a player only needs to get one foot down in bounds, an NFL player needs to get both feet down.
@chriserwalk4386 there are 3 shots ... if you mean 0:59 the perspective is not the best to evaluate football's position ... but 1:13 shot the camera is almost in the same line of 25 yard line and it is clear the ball is OVER the line. You are blind men.
Is anyone taking that computer animation seriously? It's completely fabricated, and there's no way to verify any part of it. I'll stand by my original thought: it was a forward pass.
For all you people trying to review the play on a youtube video and "reverse" the call: Im pretty sure the refs at the game reviewed it more carefully and with better angels. Quit trying to be smart. The Titans won.
@faceurhell well you're right. that could make or break your franchise. But with Steve McNair and the Titans being ranked #1 in 2-Point conversions, I thought they could pull it off.
@SDChargerFan16 Why would you attempt a 2 point conversion and put your Super Bowl hopes on one random play? This ain't no dinky red neck high school football game, this is the Super Bowl! This could make or break a franchise. That one yard turned the Rams from a team that had left it longtime home-to a team that probably will stay in St. Louis forever.
All this time I thought it was a forward pass. After watching this I have to say it was a legal play, unfortunately the miracles ran out in the Superbowl.
I originally said that Frank Wycheck was at the 25 yard line and Kevin Dyson's left foot and the football were beyond the 25 yard line. I looked at the play again & realized that he was actually behind the 25 yard line when he threw it. Stop the video at 0:20 and you will see that I am right. By stopping the video at 0:22 you will see Kevin Dyson's left foot and the football were clearly beyond the 25 yard line. This makes it an illegal forward pass. There is no need for name calling here.
@thirdchild1111 Look at the position of the ball, not the players. Stop at 1:14, you can clearly see the ball beyond 25yd line, then stop again at 1:17. The ball has moved towards the 25yd line, not the 26. It's just a couple of inches, but it counts. The footage at 0:20 makes it look like it's a little bit forwards, but the footage at 1:14 from a better angle proves it was the right call. The ball leaves Wychek's arm at 25 and 1/2 and lands in Dyson's hands a few inches from 25.
@thirdchild1111 It's not about where his foot is, it is where the ball is. That's football 101 that you learn in middle school.
You don't see quarterbacks getting penalties for throwing the ball behind the line of scrimmage while most of their body is past it. It's all about BALL LOCATION!
If you look carefully enough you will clearly see that Frank Wycheck was at the 25 yard line and Kevin Dyson's left foot and the football were beyond the 25 yard line. This makes it a forward lateral. This will go down as one of the most controversial calls in NFL playoff history. The officials botched this call. I thought it was a forward lateral then. I am still still convinced more than ever that it was a blown call by the officials. The Tennessee Titans did not deserve to win that game.

It doesn't matter the Bills got screwed again. Typical Bills. Refs hate us. Always call bullcrap penalties on us. Screw the Titans. They deserved to lose the Super Bowl.
As a transplanted Nashvillian (livin up North, HATE IT), I will NEVER forget this play or the season. I think it was the first season they played as the newly renamed Titans. To those of you STILL disputing the call.........Every team, every season has a call that doesn't go their way. It's a game of inches and falliable humans. The fact is that YOU lost the game and WE won. Get over it!
I laugh that people still debate this. Fans will see what they wanna see. It was obviously a lateral. Regardless, I hope it stings like crazy. For me, this was revenge for the 1992 playoffs.
Wow, at first I thought it was a forward pass, but I think the guy that was talking in the video was right. It really does look like it went backwards ever so slightly.
The Titans were not one yard away from "winning" the Superbowl, but "tying" the Superbowl. They still would have had to get through the Rams for an overtime--no mean feat.
@pianomikey0 I didn't say they were 1 yard from winning, I said they *lost* by 1 yard, therefore meaning they were 1 yard away from tying it up, and *potentially* winning.
@1nfam0usEdits True, but let's face it, the Rams were absolutely exhausted on defense. The Titans crushed them in the second half. If it went to overtime the Titans would have won, no doubt. And I'm a Rams fan (although they're really makin it hard on me, lol)
@jeffrowd213 Maybe, unless the Rams got the ball first. It would have been sudden death over time, and Kurt Warner was playing one heck of a game. He may have been hurting (he got hit so much), but it wouldn't have surprised me if they marched down the field, if at least to score a Field Goal.
I've been catching it for not letting the 2009 NFC Championship game go, particularly the 4th and inches play in OT that was spotted wrong and get told to let it go but that play, like this 1 by this team's fans, will never be let go by Vikings fans.
the ball was thrown behind the 25 yd line yet caught in front of the 25 yd line. A difference of probably 1-2 ft. How is that NOT forward??? Computer analysis was a joke. The NFL screwed up the call & tried saving face w/computer coverup. Funny how after yrs of NFL opposing instant replay usage that the yr they decided to impliment it was after that game. Things that make you go Hmmm???
lol at guys saying "he threw it at . . . how can it be lateral?" obviously kids who don't know football typing there. it's where the ball is at kids, not where "he" is at. now go get some puberty. :D btw, not a titans fan either. Bills solid fan here. :P
Instant replay was shot down by the NFL for YEARS before they "decided" to initiate it following that season, oops, I meant to say following that game. Certain people would have you believe that call & the outcome of that game had "nothing" to do with their decision to initiate instant replay....
Frank Wycheck was appropriately named, though I'd have spelled it Whycheck. Because a ball thrown while standing @ the 25 yd line yet caught barely to the 26 yd line is not lateral, it's forward. How could he be standing @ the yd line & throw a ball that's caught just barely to the 26 yd line & there be any question it was FORWARD.
@thedereklee9 saying he caught it on the 26 is a little bit of a stretch; it was caught barely past the 25. it is a lateral because the first guy threw it sidearm, and his arm has length. watch 1:30 - 1:40
@gopackers9995 he threw it on the right side of the 25 and he caught in on the left side of the 25, lol thats forward. not backward or sideways, no lateral. and im a titans fan
I remember this like it was yesterday. Just like the announcers on ABC, i didnt flinch when I saw the touchdown because I said immediately "Forward pass. Comin back. Settle down Tennessee it wont count" then i saw some replays and I was like "You gotta be shittin me". I give credit to the Titans for pullin the play off, but damn it am I bitter as a Bills fan. FUCK
i have nothing against the titans, but this is one of, if not the most overrated play in nfl history. people always talk about how crazy this play was but once dyson gets the ball, its a straight line touchdown with no broken tackles or anyone to be juked out. there was 1 bills defender being blocked by like 5 titans to create a wide open running lane that i couldve ran through
@RFFVNS can't say i would agree with that point. the titans all but put it away, but the bills put together an amazing drive to retake the lead. that then resulted in this play. with it being in such a meaningful situation, that alone makes it an incredible play. not to mention the fact that it was designed this way. most of the great plays you'll see in the nfl happen because of some accident or crazy bounce, but this was designed to do something that is not easily done in the nfl.
@RFFVNS Uhm... It doesn't matter if the Bills all layed on the ground and did nothing as Dyson ran past them. It's a one in a million chance. Which is what makes it so great.
@RFFVNS This is called a amazing play because when the Titans needed a amazing play it happened, and this was sweet revenge for the biggest blown lead when in the Wildcard game when the Titans were the Houston Oilers. If the NFL had something close to the Cal Stanford game this is it.
I think the fact that Dyson is positioned a little forward from Wychek down the line also makes it appear that it's a forward pass, but when you do look at the "down the line" replay, it does clearly show the ball have a backwards trajectory when Dyson receives it, proving it was a lateral after all.
I think in the original game footage from the broadcast, the camera is at a slight angle when it is focusing on the action itself, and because of the camera's angle it made it look like a forward pass on the broadcast.. However, I think the other camera angles and evidence shows that it was a legal play.
I hate loving the Bills, If that makes sense. They blow every game and the unluckiest team I've ever known. Get a 47 fielder set up, miss. Have a game wrapped up, let them lateral it and score with under a minute left or recently, fumble the ball and let them score. IT SUCKS.
@SuperLostFilms I don't hate loving the Cubs but they have the same problem of not winning games when the big games, but worse because they have not made it to the World Series since the last won it, and the losses are harrowing because of choking.
@MJBProductions2010 The fact that the Titans did the Stanford play from the Stanford Cal college football it is a miracle also because it was with 16 seconds left.
I would just like to know how its legal to throw it from the 24 yard line and catch it at the 26 yard line and have it NOT be a forward pass? In any other instance throughout the game, they spot it to where he caught the ball. If a QB threw that pass from the 24 yd line and Dyson was tackled at that spot. Would it not be a 2 yd pass?
@jcaudill6921 It's where the ball is to where the ball goes. It doesn't matter where the players' feet are when they catch it. If you look at the play, and you don't even have to look closely, you'll see that it was a clear backward pass.
@jcaudill6921 wrong....look, he does NOT throw the ball from the 24. Get your eyes checked, seriously. Pause at 1:14. The ball is about exactly between the 25 and 26. It's where the BALL is. Where his feet are mean absolutely ZERO. And pause again at about 1:17. AGAIN, it's where the ball is, it doesn't matter where ANYONES feet are. Notice it is again between the 25 and 26 but a little closer to the 25 this time. Play stands. And this is coming from a Bills fan so don't call me a homer LOL
@jcaudill6921 He didn't throw it from the 24. He extended his arm forward. That's what made the play a lateral. The computer animation shows it pretty well.
I can't find the actual rule in the NFL Rulebook that state the lateral pass is from the point of the pass and not the footing. Because if it's footing, it was a forward pass. And in all other cases of passing, it is footing.
when we put the play into madden 02 you can see this is a horrible comparison

@pianomikey0 Had they gone for 2, they could have been 1 yard from winning the SB.

I've been catching it for not letting the 2009 NFC Championship game go, particularly the 4th and inches play in OT that was spotted wrong and get told to let it go but that play, like this 1 by this team's fans, will never be let go by Vikings fans.

that was such a forward lateral, look at the lines

not a fan of either but looks forward by about a half yard
golffreak68 6 months ago
wow the bills fan are trying to make excusses saying that it was a forward pass when they bill just suck yes they SUCK
TnTitan97 7 months ago
It's all about where the ball was. He let the ball go in front of the 25 yard line and the ball was caught a little in front of the yard line.
cool7794dude 7 months ago
forward pass that's some fucking bullshit i could see it on tv but the refs couldn't see it on replay over and over again

Unbelievable
dmoney2293 7 months ago
the ball was thrown behind the 25 yd line yet caught in front of the 25 yd line. A difference of probably 1-2 ft. How is that NOT forward??? Computer analysis was a joke. The NFL screwed up the call & tried saving face w/computer coverup. Funny how after yrs of NFL opposing instant replay usage that the yr they decided to impliment it was after that game. Things that make you go Hmmm???
billsfan4evah 7 months ago
i like the joey jordison bit at the end.. lol
guitarvirtuoduder 7 months ago
lol at guys saying "he threw it at . . . how can it be lateral?" obviously kids who don't know football typing there. it's where the ball is at kids, not where "he" is at. now go get some puberty. :D btw, not a titans fan either. Bills solid fan here. :P
pakantotmiss 7 months ago
Instant replay was shot down by the NFL for YEARS before they "decided" to initiate it following that season, oops, I meant to say following that game. Certain people would have you believe that call & the outcome of that game had "nothing" to do with their decision to initiate instant replay....
billsfan4evah 7 months ago
Frank Wycheck was appropriately named, though I'd have spelled it Whycheck. Because a ball thrown while standing @ the 25 yd line yet caught barely to the 26 yd line is not lateral, it's forward. How could he be standing @ the yd line & throw a ball that's caught just barely to the 26 yd line & there be any question it was FORWARD.
billsfan4evah 7 months ago
Now after seeing this a little closer, I see it was indeed just barely backwards, but still...
danrig12 7 months ago
they spared the bills from losing another super bowl
packerfan748 7 months ago
how is it a lateral when he threw it on the 25 and he caught it on the 26?
thedereklee9 7 months ago
@thedereklee9 saying he caught it on the 26 is a little bit of a stretch; it was caught barely past the 25. it is a lateral because the first guy threw it sidearm, and his arm has length. watch 1:30 - 1:40
gopackers9995 7 months ago
@gopackers9995 he threw it on the right side of the 25 and he caught in on the left side of the 25, lol thats forward. not backward or sideways, no lateral. and im a titans fan
thedereklee9 7 months ago
Karma: This is what you get for starting Rob Johnson ahead of Doug Flutie.
kulba21 7 months ago
I remember this like it was yesterday. Just like the announcers on ABC, i didnt flinch when I saw the touchdown because I said immediately "Forward pass. Comin back. Settle down Tennessee it wont count" then i saw some replays and I was like "You gotta be shittin me". I give credit to the Titans for pullin the play off, but damn it am I bitter as a Bills fan. FUCK

This is one of those plays you teach to your team, run it ONE TIME, and then shred it and never run it again.
336kgf 9 months ago
i have nothing against the titans, but this is one of, if not the most overrated play in nfl history. people always talk about how crazy this play was but once dyson gets the ball, its a straight line touchdown with no broken tackles or anyone to be juked out. there was 1 bills defender being blocked by like 5 titans to create a wide open running lane that i couldve ran through
RFFVNS 9 months ago
@RFFVNS can't say i would agree with that point. the titans all but put it away, but the bills put together an amazing drive to retake the lead. that then resulted in this play. with it being in such a meaningful situation, that alone makes it an incredible play. not to mention the fact that it was designed this way. most of the great plays you'll see in the nfl happen because of some accident or crazy bounce, but this was designed to do something that is not easily done in the nfl.
elhayden 9 months ago
@RFFVNS Uhm... It doesn't matter if the Bills all layed on the ground and did nothing as Dyson ran past them. It's a one in a million chance. Which is what makes it so great.
richig761 9 months ago
@RFFVNS This is called a amazing play because when the Titans needed a amazing play it happened, and this was sweet revenge for the biggest blown lead when in the Wildcard game when the Titans were the Houston Oilers. If the NFL had something close to the Cal Stanford game this is it.

I think the fact that Dyson is positioned a little forward from Wychek down the line also makes it appear that it's a forward pass, but when you do look at the "down the line" replay, it does clearly show the ball have a backwards trajectory when Dyson receives it, proving it was a lateral after all.
wizeman5974 10 months ago
The titans need to pull the old uniforms back out. The new road uniforms aren't that cool. The navy blue pants look tougher than the powder blue.
jneil2007 10 months ago
This was definitely a tricky play to call. I am glad they have a computer model to demonstrate that the officials made the right call.
ObamaIsPathetic 10 months ago
The refs absolutely have to be commended for making the correct call.
jrsub3 10 months ago
@jrsub3 yes but the way they officiated the game in the first was a travesty to the NFL.
dolphinsneu 9 months ago
I think in the original game footage from the broadcast, the camera is at a slight angle when it is focusing on the action itself, and because of the camera's angle it made it look like a forward pass on the broadcast.. However, I think the other camera angles and evidence shows that it was a legal play.
TheHighwayMan394 10 months ago
IM GLAD WERE RELYING ON MADDEN 98 FOR VIDEO EVIDENCE FOR THIS BEING A FORWARD PASS. FAIL
kevbo548 10 months ago
I hate loving the Bills, If that makes sense. They blow every game and the unluckiest team I've ever known. Get a 47 fielder set up, miss. Have a game wrapped up, let them lateral it and score with under a minute left or recently, fumble the ball and let them score. IT SUCKS.
SuperLostFilms 11 months ago
@SuperLostFilms I don't hate loving the Cubs but they have the same problem of not winning games when the big games, but worse because they have not made it to the World Series since the last won it, and the losses are harrowing because of choking.

@MJBProductions2010 The fact that the Titans did the Stanford play from the Stanford Cal college football it is a miracle also because it was with 16 seconds left.
Nightavenger2 11 months ago
@Nightavenger2 Actually, the inspiration for the play came from a 1982 game between SMU and Texas Tech.
dolphinsneu 10 months ago
@dolphinsneu They should put this on Mythbusters again to prove this was a legal lateral.

animations don't prove anything, you have to look at the actual video because anyone can make an animation do whatever
jjfriedberg 1 year ago
I would just like to know how its legal to throw it from the 24 yard line and catch it at the 26 yard line and have it NOT be a forward pass? In any other instance throughout the game, they spot it to where he caught the ball. If a QB threw that pass from the 24 yd line and Dyson was tackled at that spot. Would it not be a 2 yd pass?
jcaudill6921 1 year ago
@jcaudill6921 It's where the ball is to where the ball goes. It doesn't matter where the players' feet are when they catch it. If you look at the play, and you don't even have to look closely, you'll see that it was a clear backward pass.
Phenomiracle 1 year ago
@jcaudill6921 wrong....look, he does NOT throw the ball from the 24. Get your eyes checked, seriously. Pause at 1:14. The ball is about exactly between the 25 and 26. It's where the BALL is. Where his feet are mean absolutely ZERO. And pause again at about 1:17. AGAIN, it's where the ball is, it doesn't matter where ANYONES feet are. Notice it is again between the 25 and 26 but a little closer to the 25 this time. Play stands. And this is coming from a Bills fan so don't call me a homer LOL
jpmatrixfan88 1 year ago
@jcaudill6921 He didn't throw it from the 24. He extended his arm forward. That's what made the play a lateral. The computer animation shows it pretty well.
dolphinsneu 10 months ago
I feel sorry for the Bills players Thurman Thomas, Jim Kelly and Bruce Smith. Great players that never managed to win a ring.
Midas6489 1 year ago
u can tell it wasnt a foward pass for the simple fact that dyson had to run back to catch the ball...and the ball traveled along the line
reliablethreat23 1 year ago
I can't find the actual rule in the NFL Rulebook that state the lateral pass is from the point of the pass and not the footing. Because if it's footing, it was a forward pass. And in all other cases of passing, it is footing.
