  • This is definitely worthy for the Vancouver International Film Festival, veerji. (This is Ramandeep.)

  • Love the film. Very Oscarworthy!

  • The way I see it, other than the things you listed there is no meaning.

A random viewer, or the audience doesn't give meaning to an artist's work...the artist does

If you didn't plan out anything else for this movie to stand for than it doesn't stand for anything.

  • There is an exact meaning for me, but for what it's worth i dont intend to put it out there lol. Also, i respectfully disagree with regard to what you said about a random viewer not being able to give meaning to an artists work. I routinely interpret movies, books, etc and some are more open ended then others but there is always an element of interpretation to any piece of artwork or else it would be pointless ? In my opinion, it wouldnt stand for anything then without the interpretation

  • too slow, quality is enjoyable.. you really need writers

  • excellent job. I really enjoying the angles and shots. can't wait to see more :)

  • Thnk You

  • guess i gotta step it up ;)

  • yea it was the narration for sure. but the acting aspect of short and independent filmmaking on this scale is definitely a take what you get scenario! unfortunately it can hurt projects though.

i'd really like to see more of your work though!

  • good cinematography. just found it kind of boring :|

just moved a little slow for a short film i guess?

but you definitely have good insight, as i've seen with your comments on some other vids - i'm sure the same can be applied!

what equipment do you use? i'm assuming final cut for colour corrector?

  • Yuh its the narration that we have to work on for future projects to not be so "boring" lol. But as far as color correction goes, we didnt have time to do anything drastic and our original footage wasnt shot on a camera able to white balance. So all we did was drop the saturation down a lot (which corrected the white balance issue) and up the contrast a bit.

  • This was really good. I liked the camera work and you really got a sense of the 'process' with the way it was edited. Also repeating the dialogue was a nice idea - gave the audience a sense of continuous repetition - which is what the creative process can be like.

I agree about the voice over though. I think it needs to be 'acted out' a bit better.

Good work though. I've started writing shorts recently. If I lived in Vancouver I'd love to collaborate. Really like your style of work.

  • the guy looks like a terrorist. prob thinking of a way to make a bomb

  • Comment removed

  • I like it, it's a novel concept, and I connected with the whole idea on how minds work. Yes, we are from B.C as well, good luck in your future projects!

P.S: Will you be competing in the B.C's? If so, we'll see you there!

  • will i be competing in the B.C's as in British Columbia or? I dont know wat u mean by that :P. If your talkin bout a film festival, then no, i wouldnt no wat the BC's are, but would love to get more info from you :P.

  • Well, I realized after how silly it was what I was asking.

By B.C's, I meant B.C Student Film Festival, however I'm not sure your age, so I doubt you meet the requirements :P

We are submitting one, just finished the footage today actually, now starting the editing process.

It's called "Pieces" and will be up on Youtube by the 31st if you are interested in watching.

  • WOW, I like how camera works, it was awesome.

  • I like the lighting and the edition. But I didn't like the voice and its pace. Did you try different versions of it? Why didn't you use background music?

The end is the best, has a lot of tension I think. Like he would be building a bomb.

The voice is the major figure of the film, but it doesn't come out as such I think.

Keep it up, I think there is a lot of potential.

  • While we spent a while editing and filming the story. The narration became almost an afterthough and it was completed in a short 2 hour span 3 hours before uploading due to time constraints. We tried 2 versions, one monotone and this one that has a kind of "cocky" tone. The monotone version sounded so bad that it made this one sound really great. We shoulda put more emphasis on the narration though. As for background music, that we decided to exclude to put more emphasis on the machine sounds.

  • We'll be making a new short film some time in the future, this was a great learning experience seeing as it was our first time. I wanna thank everyone who viewed and commented on our film.

  • some great shots, well done

  • Thank you so much for the support, awesome man of awesome land. Atherton film thanks you. We really like your short. Have they selected already? That's a little weird.

  • Well-shot/acted/edited, and nice voiceover. Great lighting. Thanks for commenting on "Don't Change a Thing". Keep making films.

  • Yeah what he said (im the guy in the film) better luck next year and stay tuned for we will continue to make short films as i hope the rest of you do... shits rigged.

  • Well, im pretty sure its official, the top 20 have been notified so unfortunatly we didnt make the cut. I wanna encourage everyone to watch these great films that didnt get nominated or got disqualified: Orpheus, American Haiku, Blueberry, Intersections, Icebreaker, Black Friday and Clifford. Take care you guys, best of luck in the future.

  • sweet. different. i likey. i don't believe in bad luck either- but something- that's not good luck- likes to follow me around... :) nice camera work too. good luck!

  • Great Work!!

  • This was good, but have you seen the film "Clifford"? That one has got to be the frontrunner ...

  • yes i did see clifford a few days ago, it was a great film. Great acting too. But as far as front runners go, theres a few in my mind. Atherton being one, if you havent checked that one out, chek it out.

  • "Atherton" was good, but never fulled convinced me. Not the acting, and especially not the wartime cutaways. Might strike a chord with the sentimental crowd, though. Looking beyond story concept, I think "Clifford" has the strongest filmmaking behind it. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention.

  • Atherton is one of my favorites, too

  • good work, fellas. i liked the cinematography. :) filmcritic, were you born in 1988? i just so happen to have a brick wall handy, care to smash your head on film? i'd make it into a masterpiece....

  • Good work - My critique is too big for a comment, though...so I'm posting it on your profile.

  • Hey man, thanks for checking out my entry, yours is really good too. Best of luck to the both of us ;).

  • yuh, guess were all suppose to find out today if we place in the top 20... stresss lol

  • Really? Yikes, I had no idea.

  • based on the rating criteria this is my review: Lighting 6/6.25 Sound 4/6.25 Editing 5.5/6.25 Cinematography 5/6.25 Acting 9/12.5 Script 10/12.5 Originality 17/25 Overal Impression 15/25 Overall=71.5/100 Great style, nice use of the color scheme and the blacks for composition of the dimly light workbench. It delivers on your strentgh in visual appeal, and reaching out to a broader audience isn't always a bad thing at this level when looking for votes. Hope i was helpful.
  • thnx fo the review. I appreciate it :P

  • Great film guys! Great acting, directing, editing, and all around a job well done! Good luck!

  • Excellent editing here. The shots are pretty much seemless and flow from one to the other. My mind didn't break once while following. Great job!

  • lol thnx for the compliment man. Best of luck to you and your submission too. Tomorrow might be our lucky day. But looking around, competition seems pretty tough

  • Great color correction, lighting, and cinematography! Great story, i love your lighting, just fantastic. Awesome symbolism and concept. What camera did you film with?

  • lol if the camera was any good, id tell you. :P all i no is its a JVC HD consumer camera. Aside from having very little manual settings, it has very little apple mac support. JVC HD files are also converted an almost unusable .Mod file. Or maybe i havent figured out how to use it correctly in final cut. I Had to convert the files to .mov using an equally awful 3rd party app.but the color correction pretty much saved the day for us. Thnx for the comment though, tell me wen ur 11 min one is up.

  • Great job it came out great, yea i'll let you know when i put it up!

  • Just for you buddy. Ill put my interpretation up on the description lol. I didn't think anyone would ask but ight.

  • Thanks for the comment! I watched yours the other day but I don't remember if I commented already. I've kind of given up any hopes of getting into the top 20 after watching all of these great shorts, including yours, but the nice comments at least make it worthwhile!

  • Good stuff. Great composition and pacing. I'm not a big fan of the arthouse, "open to interpretation" type stuff personally. But you really pull it off. I would love to hear your opinion of my submission. It would mean alot. it's called Icebreaker. Best of luck.

  • that film was smoulderingly hot, young james dean up in this bitch

  • Solid film boys, loved the shot with the telephone smash. Dummied that telephone. Great hammer work on the actor's part. That aside, I loved the sound you put in. This is definitely a superior film.

  • Nicely shot... and you really kept my attention. I almost wanted music but it worked.

  • This is very well done, well edited, clean, amusing; best of luck. What kind of camera did you use? You have a good shot from what I have seen in the field.

  • I used an HD JVC consumar cam, but i wouldnt reccomend it. Reason being: JVC has lil to no Apple support and practically no final cut support. I had to take the HD files and downgrade them to quality slightly less then Mini DV by using a cumbersum 3rd part converter. So im kinda dissapointed with the shot quality but i guess it didnt turn out too bad.

  • Looks great! The effort hasn't gone unnoticed.

  • yeah I agree with the kirk eric guy below me you have some of the best shots I have seen. The cinematography was amazing

  • Thnx, appreciate the comment. Good luck to you and yours.

  • Good shots. There are a lot of good films that I've seen so far.

  • I've been viewing quite a lot of Project:Direct shorts for this year (reviewing the competition, yah?), and this is by far one of the most superior ones. Good job!

  • wow, thnks for the compliment. truly makes it worth not studying for my psych and bio finals lol.

  • Yeah, I had to procrastinate on school and heap on the extra stress for my entry, too, and so far it's been worth it. Whatever happens this year, I'm definitely going to do it if they do it again next year.

    --DiB

  • Really liked it! Pretty gritty. For some reason I didn't really like the narration/narrator. It sounded like he was reading from a script.

There were some really nice shots. Good luck, looks like you have a chance! :)

  • that guy is sexy

  • yo dude, i like what i see. very tough comp, but this has a chance! 5 stars

  • nice

  • thnx appreciate it
