  • I don't get it. When you tweak the movies people throw a party, but when Lucasfilm does it, such as something as subtle as making Ewoks blink, they throw a fit and burn down a city.

  • I think the old Yoda puppet looks better in the OT; it makes him look older than the CGI.

  • @adywanuk Wow..you do a better job than George Lucas

  • i like the puppet the best, but not the phantom menace one....thats creepy! thank god they replaced that with CG! I like CG yoda too, just in a diff way. the both have pluses and minuses, its nice to see yoda jumping around, but the puppet looks more real somehow

  • The quality is amazing

  • I think Lucas shouldn't just make the mouth look like its actually speaking, I think the Yoda puppet from The Phantom Menace, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi should be replaced with the CGI Yoda from Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. That way if you watch them all the films together it looks much better

  • @BrightFilms117 the puppet from ESB & ROTJ you can tell it's real where the one from AOTC & ROTS looks totally fake. They just can't get CG to look or move realistic enough. Hopefully George would never replace the original puppet.

  • @adywanuk Well the ESB and ROTJ puppet may look real, I'll agree on that with you; but the TPM puppet is awful and looks nothing like the original puppet or the CGI Yoda, that should be replaced!

  • @BrightFilms117 yes, i agree that the TPM puppet is terrible, but that has already been replaced with the CG version for the new releases of TPM

  • @adywanuk Yeah i was never fond of CGI replacements. The lighting doesn't match up, actual actors never look in the right place when speaking to the CGI. It's like watching a game sequence FMV rather than watching an epic masterpiece.

  • @Simwillb That is the actors fault though. CGI technology is rapidly getting better. I didn't even know they had done Clu entirely in CGI for TRON: Legacy until I was told.

  • @adywanuk Are you joking? The puppet in the original trilogy is terrible! It's no better than the one in The Phantom Menace. They're all puppets, they look bad. People just hop on the bandwagon of hating on Phantom Menace Yoda just like they hop on the bandwagon of hating the movie itself, because some others do. The CGI in the prequels is incredible. It only needed touching up in a few scenes in AOTC. The puppet is outdated, CGI is the way to go.

  • @EdwardNygma1 the CGI in the prequels already looks dated. Yoda in AOTC looks fake with the ROTS version only marginally better. CGI even to this day isn't 100% good enough to make convincing living characters. Sure its good enough now for spaceships and things like Transformers etc, but it is still obvious when a creature is CG. It has nothing to do with "hopping on the bandwagon" as you call it, but the fact that they just didn't get Yoda right in the prequels.

  • @adywanuk Yoda in the prequels looks bloody fantastic, I don't know what you're on about. He looks extremely real. Especially in Revenge Of The Sith and The Phantom Menace Blu-ray. He great in Attack Of The Clones as well, with only a few scenes looking a bit unpolished. They could be touched up in a future home video release. CGI today is really believable. I saw Tron Legacy and the Jeff Bridges CGI face was one of the most incredible things in CGI I'd ever seen done.

  • @adywanuk And it has everything to do with hopping on the bandwagon. Whether you want to admit it, you have a sentimental attachment to the Original Trilogy and that is why you are trying to say that a puppet is better than a CGI model....

When you say Yoda to someone on the street they will probably think of the CGI model.

  • @adywanuk Another thing that is bad about the puppet is that the mouth does not match the words, even with your edits.

  • @EdwardNygma1 even in the prequels Yoda's mouth does not sync up correctly with the words because, if you check one of the prequel behind the scenes doc, they deliberately didn't give him a natural mouth movement and sync so it would resemble the original puppet.

  • @adywanuk And yes, in the prequels Yoda's lip synching is not perfect either, and I know it was deliberate, but it's a damn lot better than the puppet, and looks more like it's because he is an odd creature than because he is a faulty puppet or in this case, faulty CGI.

  • @BrightFilms117 I remember reading somewhere that they had replaced the TPM puppet with the CGI AOTC model way back when AOTC was released (2004 I think) and only now on Blu Ray have they released that version. The one in ROTS is also the same model as the AOTC one and although it is very good, it still isnt as good as the original puppet which shouldnt be replaced.

  • @BrightFilms117 I don't think it's necessary to replace him. The Yoda puppet from the OT fits well because it gives the impression of an aged Yoda, you know, the movements, everything.

  • the improvement in the eyes made them feel alive.

  • Dude! Excellent Job!!! i am a huge fan of the original tril. and this tweak was so subtle but added so much more realism! only other thing i would fix would be his eyes. his eyes seem puppetlike.. i wonder if you made him blink on one ocassion. If that was you DAMN! good job!

  • now i get it! good work buddy!

  • Thats all we ever wanted Adywanuk, Just the right amount without showing off, thats where Lucas fails every time.

  • Very nice. I actually like that better than all-digital Yoda. CGI just hasn't evolved enough to make me believe a digital character is there. Combining puppetry with manipulation like this, though, is great and should be done more often IMHO. Great work!

  • Ben being trained by Yoda isn't special anymore. Everyone was trained by Yoda.

  • That scene looks pretty good. And when Yoda says, "You will be" as he stares at Luke, it always makes me nervous! yaaa-aaaaauuuggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

  • VERY WELL DONE...HUGE STAR WARS FAN HERE AND AND BELIEVE YOU DID GREAT

  • OMG he looks so real! Actually this is the best way to animate non-existing creatues. Make a puppet and tweak it with CGI. Looks much, much better than CGI only.

  • @SpyengoEen - I was going to leave that exact same comment. Yoda looks far more realistic in the OT. They should've just used a puppet and then CGI him ONLY when they had to.

  • @thx291 they did that in Phantom Menance. Yoda in that was entirely a Puppet.

  • @CassDaMan1138 - Yes but that puppet in TPM was rather phony looking. Too bad the original puppet from ESB was degraded and unusable.

  • very nicely done, very subtle, i like it a lot, well done

  • nicely done!

  • Looks awesome! Maybe add a few subtle quick blinks on Yoda? Hope you get hired by Lucas to release the bluray of these films.

  • Yoda is so addorable at 1:12 - 1:17 <3

  • Huh? And this was tweaked how? Slight color correction perhaps? Other than that pretty much the same great scene. Not sure what you have to do with it or why other fanboy's are raving?

  • @jayce79 Well all the information is up there ^^. But i have manipulated Yodas mouth and some facial expressions so he looks a little less like a puppet and more like he would actually be speaking those words.

Actually if you can't see any difference then the new tweaks i have added are working perfectly as they don't stand out as not originally being performed by the puppet

  • @adywanuk

im asuming you are making this and are the same guy who made the first revisited? (great work btw everything you did made sense to me for a SE)

i do have to say that nothing really needed to be added to Yoda, im still impressed how they made him work after all these years, he doesnt even look like a puppet to me. that well done.

however i have the '80s version so i can watch it any day. a SE is a SE, so im open for it. i look forward to watch the final version, out this year?

  • @adywanuk did you improve the eyes?

  • @jayce79 Oooh knocked down :P. I could tell just by looking that there were differences. This guy has done a crapload more than Lucas has for remastering.

  • Blimey. Awesome.

  • Great Work! maybe you can tweak the entire "new" trilogy into actually good films ... i would like that! :)

  • @joeylodes LOL. Not sure if he has that much time

  • This is brilliant. I hated the idea of any change to the Yoda puppet (since I knew Luca$ would do it one day) but this is so subtle, yet powerful and by an unpaid amateur! Just compare this to the crap job ILM did "enhancing" the E.T. puppet for the SE. I'm speechless.

  • LucasArts needs to take a poll about whose special edition is better liked. Seriously, you should apply to work for them.

  • You mean Lucasfilm, if you're talking about the movies division.

  • @AragornIsStrider

    Oh, right. Thanks.

  • I think it's okay but I still like the original yoda better.

  • Good God! That was Perfect!

  • Dear Adywan: you should be very proud of yourself. I watched this video not realizing what your tweaks were; after watching it, I thought to myself: "man, that puppet was really well handled by OZ"...only to discover that's what you tweaked. Like everyone else, I am in complete awe of the perfect balance you manage to achieve between the tweaks and the original footage. Mr. Lucas: fire whoever supervised the remastered DVD versions of the OT, or at least FORCE THEM TO WATCH ADYWAN'S WORK!!

  • One question, Adywan. Are you still going to keep the DVD edition change of Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor?

  • This clip has been out since Jan and only 8 responds!?! Man this is awesome! This is like the perfect blend of leaving the puppet alone but making Yoda more realistic! Tweaking the mouth is all it needs!

  • Can this proper remastered version and the others you made be released on DVD?

  • ETA on this? I can't wait.

  • Subtle but effective enough to show a remarkable difference :)

  • Seriously, this is brilliant! I hope you are doing this work with a high definition copy!

  • wow this yoda is almost as good as the one from episode 3! congratulation adywan!!

  • Much better, if you ask me.

  • Looking awesome! I've finally tracked down a decent quality of ANH Revisited...looking forward to watching that and this as well! :)

  • Awesome work, Ady! It can be so tempting and so easy to go overboard with the tweaks, but I think it's just about perfect! He just needs a little work with the 'F' and 'V' sounds (where the bottom lip touches the teeth when we talk), but I don't know how hard that would be.

Keep up the good work, Ady! We're rooting for you, mate!

  • Subtle but brilliant!
