The best "Mild und Leise" I have ever heard was in a scene from the film "Shinning through" with Melanie Griffith and Micahel Douglas. Does anyone know who was singing? I have tried to find wothout success.
I heard the great Johanna Meier in the house so many times I've lost count. One of the finest voices I ever heard. What a crime this is her only commercial recording. Ponelle wanted her to sing the Liebestod from the orchestra pit. Ever the most cooperative of artists, that was just too much. She threatened to quit the production, and Ponnelle acquiesced. By the way, you should have heard her Ariadne and Marschallin - fabulous.
I like more the voice of Waltraud Meier and the excellent direction of Patrice Chereau (7/12/2007). Ponnelle has changed the story and that's of course the baddest thing he could do. I don't like to see this production ever more. In february 12th again Barenboim, Waltraud Meier, Matti Salminen and Ian Storey in Teatro alla Scala (Milano). The best production EVER. And there are still tickets. I'll be there.....
Good Lord he did make her hold back! While I do love his much slower tempo (some conductors take it too swiftly, namely Levine), he is not letting her give this what it needs. However, she sounds beautiful at any rate. I love her voice.
The Liebestod is much softer. I read up on this production...at this point, Isolde was to be much softer because Ponnelle who directed it wanted Isolde to appear as though from the a dream rather than present at the end with Tristan. Ponnelle took a different direction with this than as is typically done with Tristan. I've heard Ms. Meier live, and I know she has much more power than what she gets to represent here. She still sings so beautifully though.

I think she holds back a bit when she sings...
might just be me though.
At least she's terrific at it...
it's just a bit distracting when she starts each note softly...but, loud enough to hear her grow louder..y'know?
it's a GREAT scene though
I own the video.
