Each time I heard this opera's end I convince myself more and more that leitmotivs have existed since Mozart. Just pay attention on how he repeated the melody of the ficticious doctor and the "turkies". It is very clear for me that those themes identify the characters.
I watched this awful hippyness of "Cosi" to the end just to see the denouement. In some productions of "Cosi" there isn`t one, the outcome being left open to the imagination of the audience. This production is best listened to as audio. I`ve tried it. It takes away the pain of seeing such dire costumes and props, and so concentration can be given to the performers, who deserve much better than this farce. Get a copy of the Glyndebourne 2006 production instead.
Finally a director got the Don Alfonso/Despina deal right! I think this is how every Cosi should end - the two couples uncertain and Don Alfonso and Despinetta together. In the middle you'd see them conspiring and suddenly they realized their faces were close and then pull away. The insecurity on Don Alfonso's face, like he was afraid of falling in love with her but couldn't help it was so evident. His facial expressions alone deserved an oscar. Roman Trekel rules! All the singers were amazing!
I'm usually really wary about modernizing classical operas: either it works or it doesn't. This production works really well. I really like the ambiguous ending that was thrown in too.
The amibiguity is quite intended in da Ponte's libretto. For one thing, in 1780-something, there's no such thing as a "pretend wedding." Those guys married the WRONG partners; where do they go from here? The final stanza tells us... in accepting people simply as they ARE ("Cosi fan tutte") they find peace.
WOW!!! I just saw the whole thing. What a treat!!! The singing was wonderful. The sets and the direction were exceptional. Thank you RincoRican for letting me see this jewel.
WTF? Despina and Don Alfonso? That's interesting, to say the least, but other than that the ending is pretty realistic...unlike a lot of other productions.
Yes I love the Cosi productions where the ending has an air of uncertainty about it. The productions where they are all smiling friends together again at the end are just so unrealistic. Mozart and daPonte I'm sure wanted there to be these question marks!

Dearest RincoRican,
thank you for loading this piece.
I loved the whole; the singers, the stageing, the conducting.
It is a very interesting and exciting conception, I would like to see more from this type of directings.
