I fucking love this video. It is all that was right about F1 in the 80's and 90's. They all had mutual respect and a bit of friendship for each other. I love the bit when the marshall tries to get Senna of Mansells car andSenna kick him away. It also shows Mansell wasn't as boring as he is often portrayed. TV gold!!
Well , if you think that is an iconic moment you must see the video Senna helps a driver . Maybe in the race was very competitive but was a great as a person too . Senna #1 . You still live in our hearts .
Real Sportsmen , Real Gentlemen . Senna was the greatest (my opinion) also Prost,Mansell,Patrese,Alesi,Berger,Shumi,Herbert,Hill was really good drivers and with the point system (1st-10, 2nd–6, 3rd–4, 4th–3, 5th–2, 6th–1) was the most spectacular sport on the planet . Now days F1 is sterilized and neutral , the cars goes automatically and there is no competition .
@TheGiorgioSol I agree whole-heartedly mate, see my comment above. Now there is absolutely no respect or personality at all. Berger and Senna were great friends, Alesi was a true gent (so gutted he didnt win more) and yes Herbert and Hill as well. Great days sadly missed. I hate how they now piss about with the rules/points every year to make it more competative?? WTF! Its just a watered down version of F1, pathetic. You dont get other sports altering the rules to do that.
One of the most iconic moments in Formula One history. Twenty years later, new artists' impressions and die-cast models of this moment are STILL being created! :-)
eu lembro disso bem menino.. como diz o jargao, os idolos se vao cedo.. e esse foi o meu, pena de quem tem idolos como ronaldo traveco e neymar piriquito
Man, I wish I had seen this live, but I didnt start watching F1 until 1997 and from 1998 I've watched almost all races live....but really what a gentleman Mansell was and I really wish I had seen these races live, when it was era of Mansell, Prost and Senna.
@tinySHINEY1 You're alright mate, you're entitled to an opinion just like anyone else on here. This is your era just as mine was the 80s 90s so you are bound to have a different perspective , you clearly have a lot of knowledge bout the cars . If you wanna watch a couple of good you tube clips check out Senna Pole Lap spa--its awesome. And 'Senna pole inseperada', a clip where he gets the pole lap without intending to; just brilliant !! Happy watching . Nice chatting with you ; >
@tinySHINEY1 Oh and just to say you are most definitely right when it comes to aerodynamics. Way more superior today . In fact is arguably THE most important element of F1 car design and development.
@tinySHINEY1 Yeah!! They all hated each other. Fall outs all the time . Mansell had Senna by the throat, Senna punched Eddie Irvine etc, etc and lots more besides. Loads of controversy and fierce competition. And then the rise of Schumacher !!
@tinySHINEY1 Probably black and yellow, Senna's JPS lotus . There was never a black and white Maclaren . You can download Senna racing his JPS lotus. There is cracking footage of him poling laps at Brands, Adelaide and his Maclaren at Spa. Check it all out if you haven't already. Also, if you want a really good sense of what it was like back then , check out the film SENNA. It is on DVD now . You may have seen the film at the cinema. It is absolutely fantastic and a must see if you love F1 .
@tinySHINEY1 I think the racing back was more raw , razors edge and as a consequence way more exciting. You are right that that was primarily because it was MUCH less safe than today But the drivers were much more cut-throat and were much their own men .It was superb to watch, it had everything. Of course over- taking is over-taking but there was massive rivalries and they had big balls to race those cars. It was great ! I'm guessing you weren't born or were too little to see it ?
@tinySHINEY1 Trust me compared to the 80s and early 90s F1 HAS lost it's buzz. Call it nostalgia if you like but it is considered as one of the best eras of motor-racing since the sport began and it was way more exciting than today's competition. I say that as someone who still watches and likes Formula 1.
I had forgotten about this. you wouldnt get away with it now, drivers would be docked points and banned from races due to F1 health & safety bullshit. Mansell was the King for me but Senna, you are truly missed...Those were the bloody days !!
This moment in F1 history was amazing and epic. Drivers of the same caliber as Senna, Mansell, Prost, Berger, Piquet, etc. are so rare and practically non-existent in present-day F1.
1:41 - 1:47 ... Sir Murray Walker's commentary...hilarious.
Senna would rather pay tribute to Mansell's victory on home ground than complete the race. That's just bloody fantastic. Don't see this kind of humility in Formula 1 nowadays...lots more egos flying around.
@constanzocira So true they were the best and had so much respect for each other. Truly the greatest time of motor racing, glad to spend my sundays watching them competing, memory's that will stay and never fade away, bless those years.
Mansell was an avid pilot and a showman! Whenever I think of courage, and why not crazy, I remember Mansell! Pilots today's ride as fearful old. Drivers such as Mansell are missing.
The best of this scene, without excluding the victory, was given a ride by Senna Mansell.
Why was this moment not apart for that Senna documentary movie? Great sportsmanship from both legends but Senna, you will always be my hero of the motorsport world.
@danGTman Because the film makers had to edit 5 hours of footage down to an hour and forty minutes. There are loads of clips/footage of Senna in archive and even here on you tube. The makers of the documentary said it was extremely difficult to edit. I think thye had access to 700 hours of footage to make their film and of course the emphasis was always going to be the Senna/Prost rivalry .
Great video. Nigel and Ayrton were great rivals but they had respect for one another. They raced hard but clean and only had one coming together (Belgium 1987) that I can think of.
Loved how Senna kicked the marshall or fan away. It would have been poetic justice if Hamilton was the one who gave Alonso a ride back given their bitter history.
I'm a brazilian. Now that I'm 24 years old it's still in my memory. I'm so proud to think that maybe there will never be a MAN like Ayrton Senna again. The facts are: The greatest F1 driver of all time, a simple MAN with his heart open to the world and fighting against the political war in F1 (Ballestre), and off course, the way he lived - working out to prove what he was made for and just compete as it was in his short but very intense life.
Thanks , Senna. You were a very good person for us.

@lotwyo Dangerous? Get a grip. They weren't racing, and if you actually listen to the engine note it's more or less minimum revs all the way round. Sure it's not strictly safe, but we're talking here about a guy who ultimately was hilled when his car hit a concrete wall at 150mph.

@lotwyo Yes! without adequate risk assessments and method statements in place, along with adequate notifications to the relevant bodies in place this was a childish and irresponsible act that put both drivers and spectator's life at needleess risk!.*yawn*...Now seriously...gimme a break and just enjoy it! F1 in it's prime!
