  • amazing!!! What all dressage should be like bitted or bitless - FEI should introduce a catagory for the minority who ride like this or add it as a sub section - most of the riders going for the 2012 would not be able to ride like this - compression free!

  • Wow!

  • Wow! Fabulous display of horsemanship.. and dressage done correctly with harmony.

  • It looks to me like she could ride the horse better than this. He isn't putting most of his weight to his hind legs like he should. But considering it's bitless riding, it's surprisingly well ridden.

And just wondering. Why is there no walk in this dressage? I would like have seen how the horse walks.

  • @shierrinflame Clearly this is more of an exhibition than a test...and I imagine the walk occured after the video shut off

  • Trop Génial :) Exceptionnelle :) ♥

  • waouh quel beau travail, bravo

  • c'est vraiment magnifique

  • Fabulous...loved every second of it.!

  • I agree. This horse already knew his job.

  • I wish I could reach such a person......Spirit Bridle creates 'Supreme Performance Through Supreme Freedom'.....if only the dressage world and FEI would wake up to the simple fact that the bit impedes the horse.

  • Dragonharte, if you'd ridden dressage for over 20 years, you should be better than you are.

If you HAVE improved, where are YOUR videos?

Doesn't matter if she's schooled the horse previously in a bit. She's doing a lovely job in a halter, although IMHO, she's look better and be more effective by correcting the behind-the-vertical posture in the upper body.

But, hey, it's Catherine Henriquet -- she doesn't care about (or need) my two cents.

  • ah ca fait plaisir a voir !! une belle reprise de dress sans un gros arnachement

  • Having ridden dressage for over twenty years bitless, I can state unequivially that this horse appears to have been previously schooled bitted.

That being said, FEI and USEF should 'immediately' change the rules to allow bitless v. bitted in the same competiton.

  • @dragonharte8

    > I can state unequivially that this horse appears to have been previously schooled bitted.

Yes of course. And that's what I explained in the video information and in some comments. Actually Catherine Henriquet trains her horse in rope halter on a regular basis (twice a week if I remember well) but the main training is done with a bit.

  • de plus il est en licol ce qui complique un peu les aides

  • Wow, love this! :D

  • THIS is what we should be seeing in Dressage.

Anky, EG and the rest go get some lessons from Catherine Henriquet !!!

    Superb !

  • Humm, Catherine Henriquet's work is exceptional, but, DON'T COMPARE! Totilas, Salinero, Parzival... good horses, no, the BEST horses, using a double bit briddle, what's the matter? For compare the different works, Catherine Henriquet has to ride a Totilas or a Salinero! , Michel, is , in my opinion, a good , but ordinary, horse.

  • Oh yes! I quite agree, let's not compare her or her horse to Totilas, Salinero etc... there is JUST no comparison !!!

This is DRESSAGE, the rest are just yanking and kicking their horses until they give in.

    Couldn't agree more !

  • I'm 100% in agreement with you and loved this vid too :)

  • @hipicalasentiu loool : Michel is the name of her husband ! not the name of the horse ! Catherine Durand (Olympic rider - fyi) married Michel Henriquet, former student of Nuno de Oliveira....

  • trés joli cheval, et joli représentation !

  • Not perfect, but he moves freely and isn't crammed between the bit and spur, so much more pleasant to watch than a horse trying to cope with bits and spurs. Now if she'd just lose the spurs and settle for what she can get without upping the pressure.

  • Awesome but it looks like she threw the barn halter on him. We need to get some beautiful halters to show in

  • Just downright amazing! Thank you for showing that dressage CAN be done without force, cruelty and abuse.

That horse is perfectly collected mentally, emotionally, and physically!

    Bravo!

  • Actually, it's not really that collected. It is a little lazy behind and you can clearly see that the back is hollow. Also, the horse jumps together behind in the canter work and he loses rhythm in the pirouette.

It is a lovely idea, yes, but not entirely correct dressage.

  • A horse has to be mentally, emotionally, and physically collected before they are collected.

Have you seen how the horse's look if they've been trained the high level moves with Rolkur? They are all strung out and that's not collection at all.

Whether or not it's considered true physical collection in your book, the horse is at least mentally and emotionally collected, and that's the two hardest stage to achieve and alot of normal dressage riders do not achieve that.

  • 'Mental' and 'emotional' collection does not exist. How can a horse be 'mentally' or 'emotionally' carrying weight on the hind leg??

What you are describing is covered in the term 'losgelassenheit', known as suppleness in English. Suppleness not only relates to physical relaxation and flexability, but also the calm and focused mental state you are trying to describe.

Although, this horse does appear tense in some moments, but this is from the (rather scary) environment, not the training.

  • Also, many correct dressage riders can achieve not only 'losgelassenheit', but true collection (versammlung) as well.

Considering that one must first achieve rhythm, suppleness, contact, impulsion and straightness before they can achieve collection, ANY truely collected horse is relaxed.

And it doesn't matter if a horse is not correct because of hyperflexion or by some other means; the horse is STILL not correct.

  • Hi,

just to say that the horse is young in Dressage, he has just started Piaffer and Passage for example, the movements are still shy and not perfect. C. Henriquet thinks she can now go to perform a "St George". It's not yet the "Grand Prix". Patience... :)

  • He is a lovely horse. I hope he continues to improve as he gets older and stronger and more confident with all the 'tricks'.

  • true, but i would much rather see relaxed free movement at this stage of training than using the bit to force him.

this can evolve better and better over time.... forced riding never results in beauty, as some very famous people have shown us over and over.... :P

  • Yes, but relaxed and free only gets one so far. I would rather see relaxed, free, expressive, straight, forward, cadenced AND collected.

Any rider can have a horse relaxed and free, all they have to do is give them the buckle. To ride with TRUE collection, now that is an art. And one can ride like this regardless of the horse's age, breed, height or experience.

However, it seems that everyone only wants to ride on the buckle for the rest of their lives?

  • He's not really lazy behind, he is more than active enough, and far more so than almost anything else you see that passes for dressage these days...he's actually carrying himself. He looks llovely, if a little bit spooky.

  • Totally superb to watch. Wow! :O

  • and you want to know what's sad? If this was shown in a test, she would probably be told by the judges "not round enough", "horse coming above the bit"

  • WOW! Thank you for showing what it's supposed to look like!

Rollkurites, take note! this is a natural head position! Slightly in front of the vertical is the NATURAL position and the the posture that the horse chooses!

  • FEI and Judges TAKE NOTE, this is correct dressage ...can you please stick to the rules of dressage and award tests such as this one.

Now is the time to Ban Rollkur from Competition venues !!

  • genial! einfach wunderschön:)

  • She is a real breath of fresh air!!!!

  • And such lovely, active steps in the trot, still with all the expression of many of the top combinations while using his hind end. And I just love that he he so nicely before the vertical yet the neck is still arched because his head is there through self carrige. Not held there. Be nice if I could do this ;)

  • wow... this is amazing, i'm officially a bit jealous :)

  • WOW! :D

  • Superb! this is what Anky, Kittel and Gal need to look at to see TRUE dressage !!!

Nobody can ever say that this is cruel ???

  • speechless!!! i'm mailing to every single person that looks baffled at me when i say i ride this or that horse on a halter...

  • Up, open, and joyful. Brilliant! :-)

  • The idea was to proove that working with a bridle doesn't mean using strength but precision as the bridle brings a clearer signal to the horse ; plus the hands are not the only part in communication: seat, balance and legs too.

If the rider did a good job, the horse can be ridden in bridle as in hlater...as bridleless.

  • @faenix73

=that's called lightness... All the secret is here!

    I like your comments!

  • To let people know about dressage in rope halter here : Catherine Henriquet usually trains her horses in bridle. She just demonstrated in rope halter during this annual event in France (former "Savvy days" related to PNH, now called "Rencontres éthologiques").

  • Previously, I'd only seen Karen Rolf, "Dressage Naturally" instructor and author, perform brilliant dressage routines with only a rope halter or neck string. Note the relaxation of the horse in this video and his quiet tail. This is what dressage is supposed to look like!

  • Mon petit PiouPiou... Comme il est devenu grand et fort :-)

  • How lovely..... And what a happy, relaxed looking horse. Bravo!
