  • Hingis' problem wasn't the power. It was her confidence, serve and movement. The problem with her serve was racquet head speed, and she could perhaps had a little more knee-bend. In many of her matches, it didn't look like she was trying - her serve just got the point started. Her next problem was the movement (which was also affected by ankle injuries). Had she been a little quicker and less lazy, the power wouldnt have been a problem. Then theres the confidence. The 99 RG final destroyed her.

  • Who would have thought Hingis wouldn't win one Slam after 1999?

  • @kljMN2, the 99 RG final destroyed her. It shattered her confidence and the rest of her game fell apart, which is evident in this match. She was no longer returning well, she wasnt moving well, and her serve was terrible - she was trying to get a high % of first serves but what good is that when your serving at 60-70mph? I dont think she cared anymore, at this point in her career.

  • 99 RG final! She lost her confidence and her game fell appart (evident in this match). She wasnt moving or returning well. Her ground strokes lacked the agression and the depth that they once had. She wasn't moving well either. That french open destroyed her mentaly and psychologically - she was no longer confident and she became a choker. She just didnt care and didnt want to deal with it. She folded. Had she won the RG and worked on her serve and movement, she would have won MUCH more.

  • Damn Serena, you scary

  • if only she played like that she would gets everyone lol

  • What did serena say to hingis at the end?????

  • It was these sorts of beatdowns that put Hingis out of the game and propelled Serena to win 12 more slams.

  • The way Serena whips her hair back on match point at 7:07 and the look on Martina's face just sums up this match perfectly.

  • @TheFever77 The look that Hingis had on her face said it all. She knew she was Serena's bitch. There was no way she would ever beat Serena again. Serena had too much power and Martina couldn't keep up.

  • what a great match! i loved this rivalry!!

  • The only regret that I have for the "00" era was that Hingis or Capriati couldn't be a foil to Serena for the entire decade. Some of Serena's best matches were against Hingis and Capriati because they would beat her and she knew that if she wanted to be no.1, she would have to go through Martina and Jennifer....and Venus too.

  • It is impossible for a human to beat a black wild animal in terms of strength.

    Nothing talented there!

  • @beavertown2006 What a sad comment - U r obviously 'simply'... twat!

  • @beavertown2006 what an ignorant fucking idiot

  • @beavertown2006 Look....don´t think she plays so good because of her race or physical strength. Else there would have been so many players today of african-american descendants who would do well. I don´t think you have any idea about tennis players in the teenage area. To win grand slams regardless of injury and to stay at the top of the game... she needed talent, hard work... most people don´t see her strategies. And have u seen how different strategy she applies year after year?

  • @shucham i agree with u, for years the media just puts out negative things about serena and her game and we all know u cannot win 13 slams based on just power alone, people only see her game as big ground strokes and her serve but serena does play the net well also and moves the ball around the court better than anyone on the women's game today.

  • @sexygreen2010 yes...it is people like you and me and many others here who really watch tennis and understand her qualities. Imagine if she had a good media publicity like others do, how much more popular she would have been. :-)

  • @beavertown2006 Did you even see the match? Serena had faster pace...to play at that pace consistently doesn´t require strength... She was the one who was attacking and charging and doing volleys to keep hingis guessing. As you know Hingis was a counter-puncher....Serena was keeping Hingis in the center of the court with fast balls at beginning of each point so Hingis couldn´t generate angles and then Serena will suddenly hit in the sides or create angles or hit volleys to finish off the point.

  • @beavertown2006 Haha. You're an idiot. But funny.

  • I attended this match. As you hear Dick Enberg say, Serena "pitched a perfect set"--she didn't miss a single first serve in the second set. I wish this clip had more of Serena serving in Set 2. As I recall, Hingis only won a couple of points on Serena's serve in that second set, and only got about 5 or 6 of the serves back over the net.

    Amazing.

  • how didn't Serena win this championship!?!?

  • @centralviva because she lost to venus in the final

  • @centralviva

It shocked me too but Venus was really on her game and at that time, Serena still was a little intimidated by Venus

  • Wow this is the best I've seen Serena play

  • Memories. Serena still rising. Maturing. Exciting times.

Meanwhile, this was the penultimate nail in the coffin for Hingis the Slam Contender (Steffi hit that 1st nail in June '99, Jennifer finished things off in Jan '02).

  • 2.25 is probably the hardest forehand I've ever seen Martina hit.

I remember watching this match, and Serena had a 100% first serve percentage in the second set...absolutely ridiculous! Martina's my favorite player of all time but Serena was just too good.

  • This is what drove Hingis into retirement.

  • In comparison to Hingis, Serena looks like she's hitting the ball ridiculously hard in this match.

  • serena was so good in this match. Martina made some wrong tactical choices in my opinion, playing the ball long in the middle with little angle was unefficient against serena who hits winners from virtually anywhere.

  • beat down

  • Serena got all of her first serve in, that's just really amazing. Ps. love that volly at 0.54 and Ps. that's was a massacre from Serena

  • @snortincoke... lmao yes i totally agree... dinara lacks personality in her game, if u ask me shes the epitome of ball bashing not the williams sisters.

  • Thanks for this!

  • serena serves better now than she did then... but holy crap... look at her move in this video. and look at her face, such concentration. she looked like a tiger in that ensemble. i wonder how long it'll be before another woman comes along with serena's physical gifts...

  • @bjorncerovsek TigeRena!

  • @bjorncerovsek i think serenas body now is starting to look like this, supreme athlete... expect her to dominate at this years US open for sure.

  • @bjorncerovsek

You know in the 2nd set serena hit 100% first serves

  • @lacheyrulez that's just crazy. omg

  • It's too bad Serena and Hingis never faced off when Hingis made her comeback... they had some great matches!

  • @joreyes88 the reason serena was injured at tihs time and this is the reason why they never faced other

  • serena looks just amazing here!! wow!

if she was a little bit more humble i will love her 100%...for that reason i love venus :)

  • Kaash83: Of course you will never own up to it but the only real reason you think that the william sisters are ugly is because of their dark complexion and hair type. It is nothing wrong with you preferring lighter skinned women but just be hones about it. It is very hypocritical and rude to call someone ugly just because of her complexion! Venus has the same body type as Sharapova, and Laila Ali is way bigger than Serena. Laila's biceps make Serena's arms look like spaghettie noodles.

  • Venus ahs a better body type than Sharapova. Sharapova weighs 130 and Venus weighs 160. Venus has butt and thighs and more breast than Sharapova. Sharapova is shaped like Michael Phelps without the abs.

  • TOO FUNNY!! LOL For some strange reason, a lot of white men would strongly disagree with you. They probably need to get their eyes checked.

  • dayuum. what when Serena was SERENA!

  • I just noticed something that Mary Carillo said in this clip, that she wants the Williams sisters to come in to the net a lot more and play S&V tennis.... ummmm.... OK, I thought that it was the player's (and coach's) choice and not the commentator's? ;)

  • Who would have thought that Hingis would win only five Slams singles titles? Don't get me wrong, five Slams are an incredible acheivement, but Hingis, I think, is an underachiever. I had expected her to win at least a few more Slams.

  • Yup, she should have won more slams. 97 FO lost to Majoli, WTF? She also had the 99 FO and 02 AO in her hands and we all know what happened in those matches.

  • I love seeing Serena play like this! Invincible!

  • any chance of the other semi ????

  • I know right that was excellent

  • what a beat down!

  • both of em beat down their opponents, cause venus killed capriati too...lol

  • Even though Venus beat her in the finals that year, this was the beginning of Serena's rise to dominance in 02 and 03!

  • wtf what does beauty have to with this video

  • @sexyguy757 or with Serena anyway

  • I'm glad that they aren't fighting anymore.

  • What did this clip have to do with beauty??? But since we're on the subject, Serena has been listed as one of Maxim's hottest female athletes since 2002, but as you said, its a matter of opinion.

If she was blonde and blued-eyed, this wouldn't even be a discussion

  • It didn't have anything to do with beauty but I noticed in the comments there were so many people not giving the Williams sisters the credit they truly deserve. Making up excuses about flaws in their games and how their opponent was past their peaks and blah blah blah. However, the truth behind their animosity for the Williams sisters has nothing to do with their game, but more to do with their looks. Boo-hoo, stop resorting to the blonde and blue-eyed beauty card now.

  • lol, if Serena and Venus were white, they'd be celebrated as the greatest tennis players ever. How is it that Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova make more money off court than the Williamses though they don't nearly have as many accomplishments??? No one is playing the race card, but its obvious that it is a huge factor whether or not you can admit it

  • No, if Serena and Venus were good looking, they'd be celebrated as the greatest tennis players ever. Sharapova and Kournikova make more money simply because they look hotter and sexier. It has little to do with the color of the skin, but more with how attractive they are. When it comes to sports, the race card barely comes in play in the states. Tiger Woods, Ali, Jordan, and etc are all black and still considered the greatest.

  • lol so this is about attractiveness. White guys, and those that follow the typical Euro-typed beauty wouldn't find them attractive, so that's no surprise. But in my subculture, Serena's name always comes up when talking about sexy women, but I'm black so I am biased. MaSha and Anna are not seen as attractive in my neck of the woods.

Beauty comes in all different forms and its sad most of the world only finds attractiveness in through that perspective.

  • Ofcourse it's about looks. Any popular female athletes in the world. The better looking they are, the more fan following they have and more money they make. Serena got a nice ass, I'll give you that. However, I just don't see that sex appeal in her other features. I am from Brooklyn and have a thing for the thick juicy mamis too, but there's a difference in being thick and being muscular. Laila Ali is big but damn fine, and same can be said for Queen Latifah. Difference of opinion I suppose.

  • i agree with the difference in opinion thing

  • First off, this discussion ended months ago with the conclusion that opinions of beauty differs from person to person. I prefer Serena over the others, blah blah blah. Regardless of their looks and what you may think of them, history to made on the court not off.

  • Serena and Venus are still winning slams while all of their nemisis are retired..lmbao

  • True but too bad they're still ugly. Don't get me wrong, I think they are a great talent and certain hall of famers, but they lack the feminine beauty. Skills is something one acquires through hard work, while beauty, though god given, comes also from working on your looks. The Williams sisters chose this lifestyle and hence sacrificed what it's like to be a sexy woman. Sad indeed, because they have so many grandslams yet not nearly as many fans as Ivanovic,Kournikova,Sharapova and etc.

  • "...because they have so many grandslams yet not nearly as many fans."

Agreed ! They be mad ugly yo. They should have been named Shaikiki or Lafawndah or Boomquesha or something.

  • lol wtf

  • no fuking ass beauty is something created by man. white man that is. they being the then dominant culture determined what is considered beauty. serena and venus are beautiful by the new aesthetic the black one. you think your dog or parakeet can tell a beautiful human from then next? no

  • We are not discriminatin' dawgg, homie g. Tyra Banks is beautiful and so is Oprah. But Serena and Venus are just like manly and should have been named Lafonquiqui or Shanaynay or something like that.

  • Exactly. I'm not saying all black women are ugly. Hell, I would love to tap Beyonce or Halle Berry any day, but the Williams sisters are just plain ugly. Sure, women can be athletic and still be pretty, such as Laila Ali or Gina Carano, who are quite big and muscular but have that feminine quality to them. These sisters lack that. It's harsh but true.

  • Yo homie g true that. They are exemplary tennis players who lack in beauty but excel in tennis. Yaa homie g, but they should have been named something like Shaniqua, or Zoninquiqui or Shabomquiqui or Shabomtifa

  • YOU JUST PREFER LIGHT-SKINNED WOMEN. U are entitled to your opinion but not all men find Beyonce & Halle Berry attractive. You probably think that all dark-skin women are ugly- so just be honest about it.

  • @rendesvouz21 oprah beautiful?????LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  • i love that statement cause everybody gave them a hard time and thought they wouldnt be around that long...but there the only 1's left and still winning grand slams...

  • I never quite got the fascination with Martina Hingis. She did have great feel and imagination. My serve, which can be very shaky, is better than her's. There was no way that she could have stayed at the top for a prolonged period of time. Henin was just as small but had a wider variety of shots, with a much better serve.

  • Totally agree with the Henin statement. Hingis was so good at a young age and her career was over just as fast as it begun. Anyways, grateful Clijsters is coming back!! Sharapova, Clijsters, and the Williamses will be on top again before year's end.

  • I checked Hingis' head to head and it is pretty good, except against Davenport and Graf.

Anyway, I would be careful in your hopes for Clijsters. Davenport flopped after having a kid. There have been very few successes. I have to go back to Evonne Goolagong who had success after having kids. Dara Torres could be an inspiration for Kim as well.

  • actually davenport didn't really flop, she made it to a few round of 16's and besides, clijsters had a whole year after she gave birth, while davenport just a few monhts

  • I agree, Davenport did pretty well after the baby, just not as good as she had been.

I think Clijsters will do well, but not as well as before, and will never be a threat to actually win a major again (she was only 1-4 in major finals in her prime).

  • And what?As to be a white blondie is an advantage too, looks people like sharapova, kournikova, all the sponsors came juste because they blonds caucasians ariens that's all!Why she didn't mentionned that!

  • I remember this match, before that, hingis was criticised the williams sais that the williams sisters have so many sponsors because people have pitty on her because they're blacks

  • Get your facts right, zaireanboy. Hingis never said people have "pity" on the Williams Sisters. She said being black is an advantage; they get sponsors because of it and she's right. They're both dynamic, interesting women who were so different than the typical player at the time. Part of that difference is the fact they yes, they are black, and that's not racism. They definitely had hardships getting to where they are because they're black, but now it's an advantage. ANYWAY, I like all three!

  • Wow, they both played so well here! Really good quality, especially Hingis.

Sad that serena doesnt play this well anymore. Shes not nearly as fast these days, and she could never stay in a rally this long without making an error.

    Sad really.

  • i disagree with the second part of your assessment of the present serena. true, i think she doesn't move as well now as she did 7 or 8 years ago, but i think she's more patient now. she's more willing to develop a point with well-placed set-up shots, and she actually puts more spin on her shots to give them a better margin of error. she doesn't go for broke as often as she did in the past. in my mind, serena's has matured immensely, and that's why she's the best in the world right now. :)

  • I don't think people give enough credit to Martina Hingis. Women's tennis was pretty much at its all time low before she hit the scene and with all those records she set at an early age who can blame her so called arrogant personality. To be in the spotlight at that young age come on people. The media does a lot to distort images and what not. I think she is a great champion and she brought women's tennis back to headlines when it was down.

  • I remember watching this.. This seems like forever ago, this was when venus was dominating women's tennis

  • hingis should have never beat serena at the australian open or this would have never happend.. it would have been a little closer..lol

  • serena destroyed hingis, who is always so arrogant!

  • YAHWHOUS Venus did not beat Mauresmo in the us open 2001, it wa in 2002

    that year she beat capriati

  • Oh, thanks-- I mixed them up. Anyway, Serena's performance here against Hingis was astonishing.

By the way, when I searched it, I saw that Capriati played Venus four times, and was 0-4. That US Open semi in 2001 was the last time.

  • I attended this match (Venus beat Mauresmo in a the other semifinal that day).

As you hear the Enberg say near the end of the clip, Serena did not miss a first serve in the entire second set. I recall that Hingis only won a couple of points on Serena's serve in that entire set--it was and amazing serving performance.

I admired Hingis' game, but not her sour, arrogant personality. And she could never hit a bigger serve--Justine Henin did, and she was shorter and slighter than Hingis.

  • #10 seeded player beat the #1 seed. It must have made headlines back then.

  • the name williams is ranked higher than #1

  • AUSSIESYD20 you are right about the fact that hingis had a very intelligent game, but with all your loyalty, look at the sats: she has less grand slams than both venus and serena, that's what counts in the hall of fame and the history of tennis

we all know that only diehard tennis fans will remember novotna even if she had a beautiful serve-and-volley game.

What's more, like i acknowledge what hingis has done (instead of the fact that she took drugs), you have to do the same with the Ws

  • This was a great match. I think this was the 1st match i'd watched in my life froom beginning to end.

  • serena was so young, she hit the ball so hard

no one could win this serena williams

  • good match,, eventough hingis is my favorite

  • the us open definetly gets best crowds

    go serena

  • Are you serious Aus Open just broke a WR the other day/night with 67,000 plus people going to Aus Open. Sorry I don't think the US Open attendance can get anywhere near that WR set this year :)

  • dahahahahahahaha SERENA IS THE BEST!

  • what did serena said to martina after she won this match; when they were shaking hands?

  • I think she said "you played well".

  • When are ya'll just going to admit..Venus and Serena are the greatest women tennis players of all time! LOL!!!! Their athleticism off the ricter scale and they continue to be the measuring stick of womens tennis.

  • lmao only in wonderland serena and venus are the best! im glad navratilova, graff,,seles,,federer always talk about the style and the intelligence of hingis to play the game..thats ppl that know what tennis is

  • the same graff that said that williams sisters have no weakness in their game.....who is seles? the one that never beat them...or roger bcos of the same nationality...we all know navratilova is a lesbian racist who never liked the williams

  • "Lesbian Racist" is right on! That fugly woman has dogged them from day one. That fugly woman had the audacity to say that "The only thing the Williams sisters have is power".

Hey Martina Navratilova, don't forget to pay your KKK dues this month!!!

  • CRUSHED!

  • Serena played this flawlessly!

    Nothing went wrong!

Except when it went from 5-1 to 5-3 first set

  • anyone have venus s semi

  • backhand on fire!!!!!

  • Both final games were perfects!!

  • OMG! Serena was so marvelous she had a lot of power, now she is more matura but she still being the number one, i love this match!

  • I loved that volley from S. at 0:55!

  • Serena wuz so focused and strong, i luv to see her win she plays like that!!!!!1

  • I really feel that if Seles hadn't played so badly and lost in the 4R she would have been playing Serena.

  • Awesome she was steamrolling 10aces luv this match great quality thanx for posting :)

  • Thanx

  • amazing!!Thanks!!
