  • It's funny to see Joe singing up there about as well as I could right now. Joe became a much more accomplished vocalist, later on and he did it through sheer determination.

We can't actually time travel, but we can see snap shots of the past through awesome videos like this.

  • Look:

Viv cambell is a great guitarist, Steve Clark died before his time, Rick Allen lost his arm after pyro, Rick Sav wanted peace and Joe wanted to keep DEF LEPPARD going no matter what. Just take it for what it is and listen to the Fu%^iN# music. I've been shredding Def Leppard tunes since I was 12 and I'm 31 to this day. R.I.P Steve M. Clark and R.I.P Dimebag while I'm at it... luv u youtubers.

  • couldnt replace steve lol

  • Damn Joe my have a cold lol, why are the solo's weird on this tour?

  • joe sounds funny here

  • its sort of ironic..all drum machines used on this album. then live drums used live.

then rick's accident...he plays the drum parts in the studio and on pads and live. Actually helping their sound.

live drums for pyromania material didnt work..because on record they werent real.

I wonder if rick had not had the accident..would they have stayed all the time on real drums?

  • @TheSleathable . they were on the downhill b4 he lost his arm. first pete left or was kicked out, then clarkie died and the replacements were shit and contributed nuthin

  • @DublinMetalhead Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell are amazing guitarists. Rick Allen is a great drummer even with one arm, and Joe still sounds just as good as he did in the 80's. get over it. Steve Clark was great, but not irriplaceble. And Pete was kicked out because he was drunk constantly and it was holding them back.

  • @xHLGxkillermonkey

Steve Clark was definitely not replaceable, watch him he was def leppard, the reason they havent made a good album since 1991?

  • @tommy81296 personally I thought euphoria was a great album. either way, it's unfortunate that he's gone. He was an amazing guitarists. Def Leppard changed a bit. but they're still awsome.

  • @xHLGxkillermonkey

I gues there still ok but I don't like them much since steves death, but he's like ny hero haha

  • @tommy81296 exact you are true

  • @TheSleathable i wonder the same....that electric sound really boosted the sound into the 80s sound that i think of. now he stays acoustic. but do you hear rock bands with that 80s drum sound? no and if u find one...i was wrong.....white snake had that rick allen pyro hysteria drum sound

  • @TheSleathable Pyromania's drums are done on an electronic drum kit, it was first made for drummers that needed more control over the volume. however, Allen liked the sound of it, so He began using it in place of his old drum set. He also keeps real symbols on his, because the electronic ones sound to unnatural. He's still perfectly capable of using a "real" drum kit.

  • @xHLGxkillermonkey Yes he is a great drummer..I was just interested to know weather the electronic drums were at first an artistic choice or no choice. If he like electronic so much why didnt he use them on stage with Pyromania?

  • @TheSleathable and pyromania's drums were completely computer generated.. it was around the time that Rick was recovering from his accident that it was being recorded, so they just used a drum machine for the album

  • @jimihendrixtribute I thought he had his accident just before hysteria?

  • @TheSleathable yeah but his kit had to be developed, and he had to get good at it, and that took a good deal of time.

  • @TheSleathable , he did. jimihendrixtribute is blowing smoke out of his ass.

  • @jimihendrixtribute You are right about Pyromania's drums being sampled. But it was not because of Rick's accident. It's because Mutt had wanted it that way. He was really into the drums on Human League's album that he wanted it precise as such. It wasn't until pre-Production got underway for Hysteria that Rick had his accident.

  • @jimihendrixtribute dude you are totally wrong! Allen played the drums on Pyromania. How the fuck can Rick Allen be recovering from his accident while recording pyromania and still have both arms in the videos released from pyromania?? dude, he used his electronic kit after the accident which was before recording Hysteria, on the hysteria album Allen used a specially designed simmons kit for recording and live shows. get your facts straight.

  • @jemhadarsoldier dude sorry i got the albums mixed up god damn flip out about it why dont you

  • normal drum???

  • very good for the video recording in them days like. LEPPARD WILL LIVE AND ROCK THROUGH GENERATIONS UPON GENERATIONS

  • How FUN to see a vintage and very raw vid. It's a riot. Anyway, I enjoyed seeing/listening to it. I've been a DL fan since High 'n Dry, but I've never seen them like this. Thanks for the post!

  • phil collen rocks

  • Def Leppard on the way to the top;)

  • crap!

  • Oh man I love Def Leppard but this performance is a bit far from what I'd expect vocally : O

  • They sound great in studio...

  • Axel puts this boy to bed after he cries himself to sleep over his pitiful vocals.

  • @russg2415 dude this was wat 83? did u hear him in 88?? he sounded perfect!

so shut the fuck up, i love guns n roses. but axls a fucking fat prick

  • Thanks, for loading this! Damn., this is the type of thing one would never see without youtube.

  • A PURE CLASSIC!!!!!!!!

  • Love seein them young like this. It really takes me back to my younger days. Steve is great. I miss him much!!!

  • Aargh... this is not a bad song as the studio version but this performance is making my brain bleed...

  • awesome great

  • Def Leppard is my favorite band, but Joes vocals in this preformance are kinda lame...

  • @JNblok61newprofil2 They are awesome, to me atleast.

  • @JNblok61newprofil2... Masz rację, coś nie tak z jego vocalem, nie można tego słuchać!

  • This is classic metal at its best! These we're the days!

  • def leppard is my life!!!

  • DEF LEPPARD 4LIFE !

  • WOO JOE ELLIOT! hes so bloody awsome!!!

  • i can sing similar to this guy.

if you do this exact same voice and just force it more it sounds exactly like the 1988 the in the round voice he did.

i'm guessing he probably didn't hear himself clear enough through the instruments in the monitors, which is usually only common with bands that aren't used to play live though.

  • this is interesting b/c on the other live clips on YT of Def Leppard in 83, Joe Elliott sounds great (check out Billy's Got a Gun), but this sounds really bad...

  • in the song wasted too

is a great live version of the 83

in my opinion the best live version of wasted

    check out too

  • Comment removed

  • wow sorry (I know this song from a cover of my fav band) nd wanted to know if the original is good too (well music video/recorded it is really cool I think)

and i wanted to get the idea of how the original sound live, but to be honest you HAVE to admit that this is a joke... I mean the voice (atleast in this performance, will watch others too) is really crappy and there is no thing you can tell me that this is wrong. wasnt his best day here I guess

music is really good but singing here.ugh

  • he was dealing with laryangitis(sp) and lesions on his throat

  • Clark was Def Leppard, without him Def Lep is just a novelty act. RIP Clark.

  • joes voice sounds hoarse here

  • Craaaaaappy version... =/

  • Horrid version of the song. RIP SC

  • a new one... a long time ago... thanks for sharing...

  • def leppard always has good music. doesent matter if pete willis left, sreve clark died, or rick allen lost his arm... they have always ben awsome.

  • Joe's voice is definitely off on this one, but so are the back-ups. Really got to go with the studio version for this song.

  • Joe sounds good here, but I think his live voice was at it's peak between 87 and 95.

  • and besides, every guitarist has their own sound whether they use les pauls with marshall amplification or jacksons with randall amplification!!! being a guitarist is all about finding the right tone with whatever effect you use and sticking with it ! steve found his and thats what gave the signature Def Leppard sound in the 80s

  • for people who say Def Leppard sucked after Steve died, get the fuck over it. Def Leppards music started changing during Pyromania and Steve was alive so what's your response to that? and besides, if they wanted Vivian to sound like Steve, they would have told him to. Def Leppard is amazing no matter which album of theirs you listen to

  • Amen :)

  • vivian could never take the place of "steamin STEVE CLARK" and yes they totally changed the style of music! so fuck you! apparently you did not grow up in the era of this song and album!

  • oh get over it. who cares if I didn't grow up with this song. what, I'm supposed to apologize for being 17?

  • yes...!!! stick with jonas brothers son

  • you know what, I'm tired of arguing with you stupid fucking losers. I can say whatever the fuck I want and if you don't like, don't read it!!!!

  • this is so cool. even though things might have been a little off, it was still great

  • yea and have you noticed joe is wearing that same british logo shirt also?

  • Man, they took the recording right off the board.

  • Awesome vid! It's cool to see them in their early days.

  • i love this song!

  • shit, they sound so diff here. They were very young there.....they still rock.

  • Comment removed

  • so ur saying when you sing you are never off key?

it happens..im sorry but it does when its live in front of a ton of people. he sings awesome

  • You suck carmel coated camel cock.

  • anybody know what guitar phil is playing here?

  • i think it is a ibanez destroyer look it up on wikipedia, search Phil Collen

  • its a kramer but i dont know the model

  • Man Phil Collen Steve Clarke Mick Mars and John Sykes Kick Ass.

  • THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!!!!!!!!!! wowsers!!

  • duz any1 else notice that mutt lange their producer bak then inc his def leppard soudns on shanias albums or is this my imagination?

  • Holy shit this is amazing!

  • 2 arms

  • Dude its an amazing song and its cool to hear them introduce it for one of the first times its changed a bit but still it rocks!

  • i think that phil has more skill though

  • Skill as a technitian on guitar or a creative guitar player? He is both of these things of course, but i mean kurt cobain was very sloppy but he did more to change rock guitar than almost anyone, so you can't judge a guitar player by how fast they can play.

  • as a creative guitar player and yes you sort of can judge a guitar player by its speed

  • You cant Rate them

    Steve was better

He played from his heart and soul

which only few people could do

    THis sounds better

    and for there style

best thing ever so u cannot

  • there was nothing technical about steve, he was simple and his riffs vere very unique! not to mention his style of playing also

  • @ace586 Its how you 'define' technique.....Steve's stuff is very much more difficult too play compared too a lot of metallica stuff... Steve had this sleazy style but his riffs are very unique and different ... and often pretty hard too play

  • joe tears it up!..always has...but he was just a little off here..

  • Actually, check out "Foolin' live 83" for a better example of Joe's signing ability back then and the raw power of it all...better mix too.

  • Its the audio that sounds bad, in the mix you can't hear the drums, bass, or second guitar. Live they sounded much better, I saw them twice in 83, opening for Billy Squier and at the Sky Show in San Diego and they kicked butt. Joe did struggle a bit on this one, but with the full band kicking at concert volumes it actually sounded raw and in your face...I miss the High n Dry energy..the latter stuff was to processed to carry this much energy even live when they used harmonizers.

  • This is a great song. I saw them during the Adrenalize tour.

  • shit singer? check out their hysteria tour in 1988 "in the round". fool.

  • Don't forget though, this was just when Def Leppard was about to hit their stride... they hit the scene pretty fast and furious!

  • im a pro musisician with a platinum album. i saw them in 83. joe is aloooot better than you think he was live then. this video must have been a sore night with using too much falsetto to get by. trust me, the guy rocked then!

  • why is Phil playing the rideout solo, on the other live version Steve plays it and makes it sound great. Also, whats wrong with there voices they dont seem to have there harmony and Joes voice is different, is it just the audio or what.

  • Check out the Rockpalast videos from '83, much better.

  • It does NOT look like Phil is playing the rideout solo. If you look at his strumming, where he's fretting, and his rhythm (watch his elbow & feet) he is playing the main riff. In fact the rideout solo on the Hysteria tour sounds like it evolved from this one.

  • Lol. Steve does the solo at the end. Not Phil.

  • Yeah, I was replying to nwbrit's comment. How about on the album? Is that Steve too? It's sounds like him.

  • its a head set

  • i think its funny how he says "we gonna play a new one"

  • Est-ce que Rock Goddess jouait en première partie ??

  • Phil's hair is so short here!!

  • ahh classic tolerable def leppard

why did they go down hill after hysteria?

  • because Steve Clark died.

  • In my opinion they went downhill BEFORE Hysteria. The only song I can tolerate on that album is "Women". OTTN, H&D and Pyromania are still awesome to this day though!

  • Bullshit!! They rock and STILL rock today!!

  • (laughs) ok then, if you say so.

  • Thank you for coming to your senses! :)

  • Thank you for being a true wanker.

  • Your welcome I was just returning your being a pompous prick ;)

  • haw haw haw........that was so funny I forgot to laugh.

  • What are you seven?

  • Oh ho ho ho.......another lame attempt at being a comedian.

Can't you come up with anything original?

  • they started going downhill...wait they NEVER went downhill...so shut up!

  • well said

  • @rickallenthundergd best comment ever! i absolutely hate people that keep bitching about them "going downhill" and all that nonsense

  • @defleppard0717 we are allowed to have a fucking opinion just because you think they still rock doesn't mean the rest of us do does it. Just lkike we are sick of you assholes telling us how they still rock lie they used to. Everyone has a opinion and we are entitled to them don't like keep your mouth shut and move on fuck what is it with this shitty fans today like onlt their fucking opinion counts.

  • @TrueSMCfan yes... they were the best...

  • @defleppard0717 by the way been a fan since 80 and stopped in 91 and DL SUCKS Compared to what they used to be.

  • @TrueSMCfan dude i can tell just by ur screename that u are an early leps fan... and it's cool to have ur own opinion, lol..just like i have mine(: take care! (asshole)

  • @defleppard0717 btw not dude dick

  • @TrueSMCfan i love how u just picked an argument w/me JUST to simply pick an argument...u have no reasoning for being an asshole, unless u are just a natural (thats my guess).. so please, do us all a favor...shut the fuck up, and just enjoy the music, daaaaaammnn, stop bein a bitch.

  • Comment removed

  • @TrueSMCfan hahahahahahaha!

  • @defleppard0717 actually after seeing you play yeah my sentiments exactly.

  • @TrueSMCfan or should I say fake play HILARIOUS!!!

  • @rickallenthundergd This. Plus Joe's voice sounds a lot better in the In the Round Live version of Photograph during the Hysteria tour.

  • FUCK YES AWSOME AWSOME LAST GOOD ERA(83) FROM ONE OF THE BEST HEAVY METAL/ROCK BANDS EVER, R.I.P. DEF LEPPARD! (Hysteria is only listenable drunk haha.)

  • Amen to that.

  • THAT WAS GREAT, THANK YOU! WTF do you expect demonhoopa, that wasnt some huge production it was someone that was priviledged to film it and get maybe one mono RCA jack off the main board for sound. Its a raw, hungry def lep on the cusp of their year or two of being the #1 metal act on the planet. After Rick lost the arm and the band lost Mutt Lange, I slowly lost interestct. I now have much more appreciation for Joes vocals.

  • AMAZING lyrics.

  • About 7 or 8 years ago Joe Elliot said this was one of the most difficult songs for anyone to sing live. The lyrics come fast and quick and you can't take deep breaths between each line. Joe was even thinking of not singing it anymore but said it would cause the DL fans to revolt if he quit singing it live. Vince Neil of Motley Crue actually said the same thing about singing "Shout at The Devil". I have heard Joe sing this song much better and I've heard the band play it better.

  • I agree, saw them several times on stage Reading Fetival (1980), Paris and in Rouen in 83?(my friends from Anoxie did hte first part)- on stage the singer was alwys too "short" and far away from the studio. Personnaly I never thought he was a good singer.

  • Vocally a far cry from the records. Elliot is out of his range and trying to do a power falsetto. Tom Keifer did it much better.

  • who's tom keifer?

  • singer of the american rock/glam band Cinderella. Cool band lol...why do you ask?

  • Oh i just did'nt know.Cinderella is a great band.They did this song?

  • nah Def Leppard and this song were around before Cinderella debuted in 1986.

  • really,i thought cinderella was around longer than that.i knew photograph was an 83' release,it was on pyromania.the lepp's been around since 1977.

  • dude have you heard rock of ages in 83/it sounds like there all racin' to finish the song before the other band memeber.i luv these guys soooooo much but they really didn't get good LIVE until hysteria.

  • This is so farkin great.Proof that Def Lep could do it live.Go Joe!

  • ok def leppard were better as they went on but every 1 of there albums was awesome and they never ever ever ever ever ever ever sucked. they were always awesome.

  • Hell yes they've ALWAYS had great albums from the get go.if your replying about my comment about them sucking it was directted strictly to there OLD performances. They're amazing live now.

  • This really isn't that bad a performance (a little pitchy here and there, no biggie). What you're hearing is a HIDEOUS recording and mix. This is a prefect example of why bootleg recordings were a crime back in the day.

  • Hey,if this was in any way aimed at my comment above,I TOTALLY LOVE EVERY ONE OF THE LEPP ALBUMS!i said that i didn't like them "LIVE" until about 87 or 88.really they were the best band you could imagine until steve passed in my opinion.I totally agree that they've always rocked!but it took them awhile to get the hang of live performances and i'm sure as they're wealth increased i know the equipment got better wich lead to an even better live sound.I hate when people twist my words!

  • Think of the amount of money the band had for their live setup at this time. After the success of Pyro, they could afford a better sound setup....that's why the Hysteria tour sounded so good. They sound great on the Adrenalize tour as well because of the money used for the sound setup. They sounded very raw on the Pyro tour and earlier tours.

    ROCK ON!!!

  • sucked until 88' are you crazy..pyro was last good rec..you are an idiot

  • thats just your opinion. your entitled to it. but how do you explain the sales of their albums after pyro, and the sold out shows they do now?

  • They reallly sucked until like 1987 or 88'.my mom saw them in 83' and left the concert it was sooooo bad.theyr friken awesome now though.seing this song live this year was awesome it was perfect.rock on lepp!

  • Most people think if they ever sucked, which they didn't, it was after '87.

High n Dry and Pyromania are classic Rock albumsm Hysteria nad adrenalize are Pop Rock.

  • i'm not saying the band's music sucked, god the albums were great.for christ's sake i've got the e.p.,but otherwise i just think def leppard live until about 87' sucked.you can't tell me this video actually sounds good!give pyromania;track 2 a listen.big difference huh.then listen to photograph on historia/in the round.i'd say that's a big improvement.

  • part of it's the video. imagine it live, in on a stage, in an auditorium. I bet it sounded better than this in real life.

  • well that is a true fact, but still my mom saw them and LEFT the concert.and you can hear all the squeaking the p.a. systems doing. They are truely an amazing live band though now, trust me iv'e seen them live.def leppard are my hero's!

  • Gear and soundmen are better nowadays. This was new music back then. Plus, all new bands suck in their early shows. That's what makes this stuff cool as shit.

  • yes
