  • @stlouisgoalkeeping

great great video, Im coach myself(kids 6-12) and kids at this age are very enthused n excited by what they are doing. Loved how u handle his enthusiasm in 6:00 u probably telling him learning n proper execution of technique is more important at this time. Great job man n ill keep watching your videos for more tips

  • hello im 11 and im only 4,6 feet and i wonder if you think that i can be a goalkeeper or am i too short?

  • Thanks for the awesome video as it helped me alot , im going to watch more of the videos

  • How many people got injured doing this? You should never jump like that unless you are going to fall.

  • @ddrosler

funny! seriously, nobody has ever gotten injured doing this. In fact this movement is doen by elite level athletes from a number of different sports for the sole purpose of both developing strength, as well as isolation of a particular movement. thanks for your concern, but no need to worry.

  • its funny how the boy tries to say something and then the coach tells him off.

  • thanks for this video..i am a new goalkeeper at our university..im quite fast because i am a badminton player as well...and i want to learn more about diving..and again..thanks for your videos..=D

  • I have a tendency to close my eyes when making a save. Especially during long/high dives. Any tips for ways to keep them open?

  • Bot

  • Bor

  • what club's shirt is the kid wearing?

  • That kid doesn't even take goalkeeping seriously. I'm a junior in high school and I play keeper but I wish I could join an academy so I could get better at it

  • Im 11 and i play in goal.

About the thing where some golies dive to sides which there bad on i have the same promblem how do you get better a both sides?

  • The kid is saying "hi mom". That shows his lack of seriousness for goalkeeping. Honestly I wish I could join an academy. I'm a high school goal keeper in grade 11 and I train myself with my friends by watching a few videos here and there because it's hard at the moment for me to join an academy for personal reasons. Your goalkeeping training videos are going to help me quite a lot. Really thankful to you for posting it up on youtube!

  • he obviously isn't taking goal keeping seriously...2:50

  • great vid

  • How would u save a shot that is hit low with alot of pace roughly a metre away from u i have tried getting down fast and protecting the ball with mybody and trying to catch it but the ball keeps slipping under my body or i end up dropping the ball also what would be the best position to have your hands in order to make a clean catchi have been conceding alot of goals like this lately and its starting to have an impact on my confidence andim playing very bad lately pls reply love your vids thanks

  • Very helpful thanks for the video but that kid rushed things to much try getting an older assistant :)

  • @Elit3xKiilz

it's funny because we have a lot of very good goalkeepers at this young age and we wanted to use one of them, but this kid begged and begged me to let him do it. Probably a bad choice.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping yea this decision was bad u shouldnt pick him if he would have an attatiute in a mach just like he had on the vid welll hes not gonna make it far

    i wish i could train with u ...

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping your training is awesome!!! i m gonna download this video to my laptop and take it with me to my personal training to do these things!!! you re fine! greetings from greece

  • Thank you for your training. I am a high school coach and your video is helping me a lot.

  • @jbraga23

Thank you and all the best to you.

  • 5:59 ahhaha xD

  • Hey, I've watched many of your videos and I have a question

I have been a goalkeeper for 1 year when I was 13-14, than I had to stop because of my Achilles tendon ( if thats how you say it, I'm Dutch ).Now I'm 16 and I'm gonna start playing soccer again, although I can't dive to my left, my right side is perfect I can get almost any ball shot at the right side, it's just I never learned to dive to the left, I just can't get it the right way.

    Do you have any tips?

    Thanks in advance!

  • And, of course: To not do leaps to the ground shoots... you have to dive and stretch.

That means: Go down and next stretch long slight above the ground to long distance shoots.

    Do not leap....

  • @SteffenReichel

yes, I agree again. The goalkeeper has a very difficult time learning to bend at his knees in order to lower his center of gravity towards the ground, thus forcing to leap through the air for a ball that is on the ground. He was never able to break the habit.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping

Why not going a step back?

Why doing from the upright ready position?

Look my newst video, I made it for you in english!

Try do with him on knees first! Let him master the technic without ball, a placed ball.. roll the ball to him and ensure a good and smooth technic, and after: Do it with a shot.

Ensure, not to go stomic first, because were goalkeepers, not superman, who's preparing to take off

  • Pay more attention: The leap is done nearly stomic to the ground, so isn't ideal.

So he jumps, turns stomic to the ground and takes to ball, so landing will be improper, because: This will lead to a false diving technique. Body has to be sideways, and if landing without a roll, most important is not to turn stomic to the ground and roll legs first to the shoulders... So he will hit the ground maybe with the knee, what can hurt.

  • great trainer....so kind..

  • jake looks like he has attitude in the video

  • he cant even remember his own age

  • That kid needs to go to an acting school, because he sure is doing allot of that in this video.

  • this little poor guy isn't good for anything

  • thats a fat kid

  • anyway, what would be a good attire for goalkeeping?

a pair of trackpant or shorts?

a long sleve or a normal sports shirt?

  • just as a general principle, I would say a pair of track pants and a long sleeve jersey will do you nicely. If the surface that you are playing on is of a very high quality, then shorts and even a short sleeve shirt will do.

  • Wow, i can see that you train young goalkeepers nice and easy. you don go rough on them. cool :D

  • This is a good drill video. I tried them, the next day I had a clean sheet.

  • i wanna impress a teams coach thursday because i wanna join their team but i stink at goalie kicks any tips?

  • Esta chido el video yo como portero recomiendo este video

  • should you swing your arms when you dive??

  • i wouldn't say "swing" them....I would say "push" them when you dive.

  • Yes, it would be more correct to push them out from your position torwards the ball.

    Very good videos, mr. Instructor.

    Best regards from Norway.

  • thank you..all the best to you.

  • Thank you very much. I noticed I wrote "torwards", but it should be TOWARDS. :-) So now I have corrected that error.

By the way: I have watched quite few of your videos, and the theory is excellent.

All the best to you too, stlouisgoalkeeping. :-)

  • I will not need any shool.I'm self-taught.

  • GL getting better then, I was self taught too the age of 15 mate. I was a decent goal keeper, but when I started to get own keeper coachs my carrier had a kick off for sure.

  • You should represent your Country! Thanks for the videos! Got selected just because of you!

  • thank you. all the best.

  • This is just a great drill for young kids. My son aged 10 played on the left of midfield last year and because of a shortage this year in net he has volunteered for the keepers roll. The only problem with this is that he has a tendency to use his feet when a dive would be more appropriate. The drills should help no end. Many thanks..

  • hey try to show more videos you are such a great teacher.... congratulation from Venezuela

  • show more videos please

  • Hey this is antonio from venezuela, i have been waiting for more videos from you cause you are such a great instructor. congratulations

  • this coach dosnt letteh kid explain lol the kids like common man lol. hey i got a pair of t90 adias finger saves size 11 for 10 dollar beacause the store set prices by sales amount and noone really playes football in michigan so they were 10 instead of 70 lol.

  • i use to play midfield but i always liked being goile i didnt like train for it but i was pretty good but like a month ago i decided thet i coulld have something as a goalkeeper um..your videos really really help me so i wantted to thank u!!! and im looking for a good acadamy in houston tx

  • What gloves do he have

  • what kind of gloves wud u say i should buy because i am playing for a academy at bradford city girls centre of excellence

  • I found myself a pair of Umbro SX Premiere Fingersave gloves. Are these decent for someone who isn't playing at too high of a level?

  • those should be just fine.

  • Panathinaikos <3

  • hey, what gloves do you recomend for someone new to the position?

  • I would say a $40-50 pair of gloves,,,,Nike, Adidas, Reusch, Uhlsport, Puma...try them all and see what fits best for you and your hands.

  • for beginning goalkeepers, fingersaves would be useful, as an advanced goalkeeper, i say that without fingersaves the hand is more free and it's bit better

  • agreed..

  • I started off wid fingersaves now im using gloves without them and with extra grip.

    Adidas fingersave> Lotto glove

  • haha ure videos are really helpful to me man im a beginner goalie lol... but im also pretty experienced in videography. and theres something called editing lmao sry i had to say that wen the kid tried to talk...

  • kids are so unpredictable...but I thought it was kind of funny as well, so I left it in.

  • haha what did you say in the conversation at 6:00

and the videos are fantastic thanks so much

  • thank you....and I told him that this was a professional setting and he needed to behave accordingly, like a young professional...kids at 10 can sometimes lose their concentration from time to time.

  • Your an absolutely brilliant coach and a real inspiration. Wish i could do what you do when im older.

  • thank you very much. I'm sure if it's something that you want to do and you immerse yourself in the position over the course of 20-30 years, you will know everything you need to know, to train goalkeepers when you are older. all the best to you in the future.

  • Hi Brian. You seemed not so tall standing next to the kid. Did they often compare you with Danny Verlinden when you were in Belgium?

  • YES!!! that's great that you mention that...I didn't think many people still rememberd Verlinden....that was many years ago..also, the kid in the video is pretty tall for his age...but, I am kind of short for my age :D

  • i got same keeper gloves

  • I was taught to bring my upper leg up to my chest and then to drive it hard to pop up from the ground quickly, and ideally without having to use my hands. I've noticed college-aged players on your videos not driving with their leg to get up, they just push up with both or their arms and hands — thereby making these important ball-stopping parts of the body unavailable to make a save — for at least long enough to make a potential difference on a quick rebound shot. What's up with this?

  • we teach the technique in a similiar way here, although it's a slightly different motion with the top leg, but the idea is the same. As for what they are doing in the videos, can you give me the time frame on the video so we can discuss the exact moment you are looking at... would be more than happy to discuss.

  • I've noticed that you don't seem to teach a proper technique for getting up from a dive. You are allowing Jake to roll over backward onto his stomach repeatedly and thereby potentially over the line with the ball when he "recovers" from a dive.

  • yes, he does that once or twice, but the purpose of this particular video is to show drills that can be done to help master the beginning diving technique. Had this been a training session in which Jake was involved, then we would have had the opportunity to stop the excercise, correct the technique and then give him the opportunity to reinforce the proper habits. but this video wasn't really for Jake, it was more for others to see what kinds of drills could be done for this issue.

  • You are not only a good trainer, but a true professional. If I was training Jake he would have been doing push ups until his arms feel off . I am sure there were better keepers, in his age group, available to help you with the video. Jake should have felt lucky to be chosen and been on his best behavior.

  • you are a great trainer, I wish I had this kind of practice when I was that age. And you really know how to work with kids, I'd love to know what you said to him when he was like "come on man..." at 6:05.

  • thank you very much....I had to remind him that we were working in a professional environment and he needed to present himself accordingly. all the best to you.

  • um thats why they say its for beginners?

  • exactly....he's been playing for about a year or so consistantly....let's see how good we can get him over the next two years or so....

  • imp: the drills were very good. but the poor kid sucked. lol.

he didnt even shuffle in the last part. he just got up and jumped on the ball. sigh.

but thanks for the drills! those should come in handy.

  • no problem...and we didn't select our best kids on purpose, because we want to see how good we can make an average player for that age in 2-3 years time...we'll keep using him for basic drills videos on different topics and let's see how well he progresses over time.

  • lol , hi mom

    but he is good :)

    very good imo

  • that was funny...he's a character.

  • nice vid! btw, where did you get those gloves? (the trainer's one)

    i'd really appreciate it

  • they are Reusch Bundesliga gloves....they are being discontinued for 09, but I know they still have some at the warehouse....we have a contract with Reusch, so we get whatever we need in terms of equipment and prodduct.

  • its good that the trainer says well done, that makes a goalkeeper feel good. i know it from my own experience :)

  • yes, it is very important to encourage the player when the player executes a movement technically correct....not only for motivation to continue working hard, but also to let them know that the motion was correct and that is the physical feeling they should be striving for with their body.

  • lmao that kid must be smart kid trying to remember his own age lol jkz
