it's hard to imagine that a hardened killer ever got so depressed that he let himself be killed. but then in many cases professional killers have had families as if they could protect them. the only motivation jesse could have had, was protecting his family. Instead of a DEA style raid with a machinegun in your family's face, after they hit the wrong house 10 times looking for you.
He pretty much got assassinated cause' the kid that shot him was a little bitch that's why the movie is called "the assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford' this kid was obsessed with him & pretty much wanted to be the one that got to say "I shot Jesse James" he made plays about him afterward then someone shot him. WATCH THE MOVIE (:
No it is called that because the book was. The kid was obsessed with him but grew to hate him more and more and most of the stuff he knew about was fake. Jesse was going to kill him one way or the other and with the midnight ride coming which is how one of their friends died by a shot in the back by Jesse. He did make plays because he thought everyone would think he was a hero for killing an evil man like Jesse, but no one did and he regretted killing him. The coward part was ironic.
@cloud28740@cloud28740 I would say, check Wikipedia for Gods sake. He was a criminal around 1882, who stole from the rich. Really, read Wikipedia -> Jesse James!
It tells everything about him. And watch the movie too!
From when Jesse turns around, and the music kicks in is fanstastic cinematography, one of my fav films, Brad excelled in portraying the ruthless cold hearted but every childerens hero Jesse James Brilliantly, a great watch from a great film!
What a powerful film. I think Jesse was tired of running, tired of being lied to by his friends and didn't want to be caught by the law. He knew he was a living legend and would have rather died by the hands of someone he knew while he was still a free man then rot away in a cell. The fact that he stands up on a chair is interesting, kind of playing off of his lofty ego, standing above Ford as he kills him. Or maybe it was symbolic of his long fall from the top.
Do you think that when leading up to Fords own death, Ford thought he had it comin', or that he believed there was no one who would waste the energy on a nobody like him?
@Friedstuffsable He had to know it was coming. He carried a gun on him at all times. And before O' Kelley killed him, a man tried to assasinate him but failed.
@MrForrest1991 Oh yeah, Jesse knew it, but he let Bob to do it because he wanted to die. He had many medical and psychic problems and was depressed because of betrayal of people that he believed in. But hero like Jesse can´t commit suicide so he let Bob to kill him.
oh...and wood was shot in the kitchen....not in the bedroom.... and it wasnt for "tampering" with his daddy.... it was because he (most likely lieing as martha wasnt interested in him sexualy) accused Dick of stealing money from the gang....when dick asked for proof and wood couldnt provide, Dick became angry and pulled his gun on wood.... it is only speculated that Rob Ford had become involved, but he sor his chance to turn a allie into a enemy for jesse and losing him a partner (wood)
FANTASTIC MOVIE. though sadly pretty inaccurent to the actual events....also dosnt mention that Jesse was shot 4 times, 2 in the chest, one in the hip and one in the nee.... his final bullet gets lodged just behind his left eye....she also was sporting a rather large bierd by this point as well....
and if anyone is wondering if it was abit harsh that he shot ed miller, they were actually having a over heated arguement over a bag of tobacco when ed pulled a gun on jesse, jesse hit him in chest.
Incredible movie. While this is a fantastic scene, it always falls second in emotional impact ***SPOILER IF YOU'RE REALLY DUMB*** to the scene of James' wife viewing her husband's dead body on ice with the curious crowd of paying onlookers. That single shot is absolutely devastating and never ceases to reduce me to tears for the rest (20+ minutes) of the movie.
Fantastic. The sympathies of the audience are continuously swung between the rejected and desperate Robert Ford, to the charming swagger of Jesse James. Yet the former is a greasy, whiny wannabe, the latter is a cold blooded, mentally disturbed killer. Eastwood and Wayne were loved alternatively, yet these two characters shall stand as the ultimate paradox of theatrical western masculinity.
@alixwaldononato A number of reasons. True they wanted fame, money, infamy etc. Also because Bob Ford shot and killed Jessie's cousin defending a man named Wood when the two fell out over Wood sleeping with his Step mother. The Ford's knew that Jessie would find out and probably kill the both of them for it. Another reason was Bob Ford was humiliated by Jessie for being so eager to please. The fact Jessie's paranoia was becoming worse and mistrust of everyone didn't help either.
Jesse James and billy the kid best outlaws that ever lived this movie with Jesse James and young guns 1 and 2 with billy the kid are really well Made movies and really talk about their lives as outlaws
you people don't get it, if Robert would not shot him, then Jesse would kill him later. he did the right move...you can't call him coward for shooting him from the back, In that case that makes Jesse a coward for shooting Ed in the back too.
Ed knew that Jesse would kill him, though, just as Jesse knew that Bob would him. The main difference was that Bob was living with Jesse, and killed Jesse inside his own house, with his wife and kids just a few yards away. Also, Jesse was disarmed. Ed wasn't, IIRC. I mean, it's still essentially the same situation, though.
@WingerNu1 That's true but Jesse would kill him later if Robert didn't shoot him right there. He had no choice, and Jesse was a scumbag, seriously. That man robbed banks and killed innocent people. I mean, what's your opinion?
@Alpito123 I've read that it was never determined exactly what happened to Ed. It was assumed JJ shot him because it was assumed JJ was in the area and the movie took this assumption and used it. Some feel Ed may have quit the gang and left for Kentucky or Texas. Jim Cummins spread the word JJ killed Ed but it was known there was bad blood between JJ and Cummins who some feel fabricated the murder to get others to turn on JJ.
Seriously, this is one of the greatest films I have ever seen. I'm not just being biased because the film in question is on this page. I truly mean it. It's quite depressing really, I mean that in the best way, in the most realistic way, almost that no hero anti hero can live for too long, they will have there end, ultimately.Life can be depressing, realistically. This film taught me a lot about life.
Yes, this film is very sad, but... did anyone else laugh out loud when they saw Casey Affleck's makeup in the first theatrical reconstruction of the killing, towards the end of the film?
@TheToeBrand He was hit in the head and the mass of his head pivots on his neck and down the rest of his body. The force of the bullet is largely dispersed through the body of the shooter (say 160lbs of mass for the shooter). The target's head on the other hand has substantially has less mass so more of the energy is imparted to the head pivoting on the neck. Simple experiment: shoot a cinder block on a rope. It will move a lot more then the shooter.
i don't get why all this "love" for Jesse James i mean i get why people would pay for a photo of his dead body but pay to see his house, to see a scene about the last moments? he was a criminal, he killed people for their money and belongs, Robert Ford is the "bad guy"? i don't get it what did i miss?
and why they didn't simply "arrested" Jesse or simply do w/e they would do at that time?
if anyone care to explain me a thing or 2 i would appreciate i would like to understand.
@Picobeat the only people he killed and robbed were people like government officals and ex-union army officers who were corrupt and treated those who supported the confederatcy unfair and stole their land. also after the civil war an ex-union officer killed his father and burned down their home.
They didn't arrest Jesse because they didn't know it was him. He was going under a false name. Robert Ford was seen as 'the bad guy' because he betrayed the trust Jesse had put in him. He ate Jesse's food, he slept in Jesse's bed, he lived in Jesse's house, yet he still killed Jesse for a reward. However it is likely that if he hadn't have killed Jesse, he himself would have been murdered, but no one really thought about that.
@MrTimeControl There was also a political factor. Jesse James was an ex-Confederate who had targeted Union friendly banks. In the economic panic that followed Reconstruction, he was seen by some elements of society, namely the poor Redeemers as an underground hero, rather than a bank robber, murderer and terrorist.
amazing movie, loved the cast and the acting, amazing soundtrack and offcourse great scene .. but i dissagree .. its far from being "the best photography of the history"
I wonder if Jesse really saw Bob in the reflection of the picture in real life... would be interesting to know the thoughts of all the people in the room that day.
why does he just offer himself up? He clearly knew what he was doing when he took of his guns (for perhaps the first time in his life). Why martyr himself? He knew he would be killed, but did it anyways. Was he proving a point? that he was and always would be braver than Bob, that even in death he couldn't be defeated because he had chosen that path? I still don't quite get it.
@kungfuchicken98 I think alot of things were going on for Jessie in these moments. His fatigue from always being on the run and concern for his family certainly come into it. I also think that he cared about Bob. He could see how the situation was developing and didnt want to be put in a position where he might have to kill Ford - probably didnt trust his own nature if that should happen. He also would probably rather have Bob bring him down anyways rather than hang on a lawman's noose.
@Hubris73 It's possible reading about Liddel's confession in the paper had a lot to do with it too. I think he saw right through Bob's attempt to try and act like he knew nothing about it, confirmed his distrust of the kid, so he took his guns off to see if he was right.
@jmj540 Ikr, A lot of people called this movie slow (not ppl on YT), but I don't see how they could have ignored the tension buildup throughout the entire movie.
I never really did understand the true meaning to this clip. Did Jesse know he was going to be assassinated or not? Was he in so much pain from his disease that he wanted to die, maybe? Or did the guy just happened to catch Jesse off guard?
@DJSexLeopard well the scene before this jesse is at the table reading the paper when he comes across 'the arrest and confession of Dick Liddel' and begins to read it and he knew Bob was their during the confession so Jesse i believe let himself get killed because of the pain and just plain was tired of running he knew his end was coming either death or prison.
@DJSexLeopard I doubt it had anything to do with catching Jesse off guard which is something no one could ever do. Throughout the movie as the plot gradually develops, it is made clear that he is physically, emotionally, and psychologically sick. I think in the end he just wanted it all to be over.
I hate to seem obnoxious by doing this, but I made a Robert Ford-dedicated video from this film, and am trying to bump up the views on it to get it going... If anyone is interested, just go to my page and you'll find it. I thank you in advance.
Anyway, I love this movie so much. This scene is a prime example of why. The music, the art direction, the acting, the emotion that just pulses through the screen...so, so underrated. It's disappointing.
@DaveDinnerDude yeah man its the original soundtrack, don't know the exact name of the song but the artists are nick cave & warren ellis, just type it in at the itunes store
Throughout the film you're reminded of how aware jessie is, like when they're asleep, bob slightly moves and jessies got his gun ready. In this scene its almost as if jessie knows as soon as he gets up he'll get shot, the sad music comes on as he walks towards the picture, then its like he's waiting for the bullet, to lay him to rest from the constant running and paranoia. R.I.P jessie james, awesome performnce from Pitt and Affleck, shame about no awards for it, good music tracks too.
@MrConrad1993 Oh I KNOW, right? It was like Jesse just KNEW Robert was going to shoot him! I just wrote a response to the Jesse James biography by T.J. Stiles for one of my classes and I talked about this movie in that paper as well. And I mentioned how it was odd that Jesse removed the belt with his pistols because he never really trusted Robert. But yeah! I think Jesse knew what was happening. Sorry for the rant. But this movie is just SO good.
Notice that "BRAD PITT" in "all his movies" has "A MARK ON HIS HAIR" that looks
obviously like a "WIG" because he is all the time elaborating his "hair and body" to do a "LITERAL JESUSCHRIST" but "PRETENDING HE IS SIMPLY SEXY". He is nothing more than a "prostitute with an erectile vagina" serving "PASTA PUTTANESCA"!
@topdawg732 Yeah, and I bet he knew that Bob would kill him and vice versa, but it just seems like he went out too easy, like he just gave up, even had everyone right where he wanted them, crazy:/
it's hard to imagine that a hardened killer ever got so depressed that he let himself be killed. but then in many cases professional killers have had families as if they could protect them. the only motivation jesse could have had, was protecting his family. Instead of a DEA style raid with a machinegun in your family's face, after they hit the wrong house 10 times looking for you.

He knew he would be killed, but did it anyways. Was he proving a point? that he was and always would be braver than Bob, that even in death he couldn't be defeated because he had chosen that path? I still don't quite get it.
kungfuchicken98 8 months ago
@kungfuchicken98 he was sick of running and he realised what it was doing to his family
babadababoi777 8 months ago
@kungfuchicken98 Probably got tired of looking over his shoulder all the time.
SabbraCadabra 7 months ago
@kungfuchicken98 I think alot of things were going on for Jessie in these moments. His fatigue from always being on the run and concern for his family certainly come into it. I also think that he cared about Bob. He could see how the situation was developing and didnt want to be put in a position where he might have to kill Ford - probably didnt trust his own nature if that should happen. He also would probably rather have Bob bring him down anyways rather than hang on a lawman's noose.
Hubris73 7 months ago 5
@Hubris73 It's possible reading about Liddel's confession in the paper had a lot to do with it too. I think he saw right through Bob's attempt to try and act like he knew nothing about it, confirmed his distrust of the kid, so he took his guns off to see if he was right.

@kungfuchicken98 Some people just get tired of running I suppose.

Sam Rockwell has yet to disappoint me.

I never really did understand the true meaning to this clip. Did Jesse know he was going to be assassinated or not? Was he in so much pain from his disease that he wanted to die, maybe? Or did the guy just happened to catch Jesse off guard?
DJSexLeopard 9 months ago
@DJSexLeopard well the scene before this jesse is at the table reading the paper when he comes across 'the arrest and confession of Dick Liddel' and begins to read it and he knew Bob was their during the confession so Jesse i believe let himself get killed because of the pain and just plain was tired of running he knew his end was coming either death or prison.
ChristMelee 8 months ago
@DJSexLeopard he knew he was going to die. just read that guy's comment above
ReptarTheUgly 8 months ago

MrConrad1993 10 months ago 3
