Well, that really depends on the band. There are bands which are considered to play Melodic Death Metal however they're heavier than some general Death Metal bands. Anyways, in my opinion the rule is that MDM is not that heavy at all. Maybe as "heavy" as other Metal genres but in most cases it cannot compete with the brutality of the Death Metal majority.
