Not really. Phantasia through Eternia, the hero could wield an axe if he wanted to, as well as spears. Hell, in Phantasia, Cless' first "Magic weapon of immense power etc." was a spear.
They probably just stuck it there to show you that Skill Changes are permanently learned rather than performed circumstantially. Most of the artes that were given in the demo were just there for show and aren't likely to be learned that early without the use of the GRADE shop.
All these Tales games coming to the US makes me HAPPY!

Yeah i guess so! I figured it out that Nightingale is the skill change to Nurse. But why would they put Nightingale in the Demo first and not Nurse?

The way Yuri fights (with all the spinning) is awesome with a sword, but it doesn't look right with an axe.
