I'm just saying that it doesn't matter what's in the book, followers are more influenced by other followers than they are by religious texts.

If you read Mark 10:17-29 you will see that is not what Jesus is saying. In fact, Jesus says repeatedly throughout the scriptures that worldly wealth directly hurts your chance of salvation, because all that stuff in your life keeps you from giving your whole heart to god. I find no comfort in it, but it is true: If you call yourself a Christian and have lots of possessions and wealth, you don't know your scripture. Sorry. Crack the book if you're gonna live your life by it.

Whenever you make that citation, which you probably got off the internet, you should drop verses 28 and 29 from it, the whole part about through the father all things are possible bit throws your entire point out the window. Not to mention that if this was the standard, any Israeli who prospered during the days before King Saul would be burning in hell, something which no one who properly understands scripture would assert.

You are right that I got it off the internet, but out of an online copy of the Bible, not by copy and pasting from another site. I actually went back and re-read the whole chapter just to make sure I wasn't crazy after what soakupthesunman said. And I have read most of the Bible. Still trying to get through the Old Testament, but I really dislike it so it's hard. Of course, I don't feel I HAVE to read the whole thing, since I don't claim it's true.

Indeed, it's kind of hard to justify supporting any system that charges more than 10% taxes to its citizens if you believed the Old Testament to be true, as this was considered a pretty steep tax by those crazy theistic Israelites in the Book of Judges.
I'm assuming you are coming from a secular socialistic viewpoint regarding scripture, because there's a juicy quote concerning private interpretation that would give you problems, granted this would include most modern Evangelicals as well.

The other quote is about sharing: If you have 2 coats, give one to a man who has none. That isn't about taking it with you, it is about sharing here and now.

He actually did say just that a couple of times. Again, it's a great idea to read the whole book. He says to sell everything, give your possessions to the poor, and to follow him. By cleansing yourself of earthly burdens and devoting your life to his service, you are earning yourself a great reward in Heaven he says. A simple Google search will confirm what I'm saying. It's hilarious how many hypochristians are rating me down because I'm referencing the Bible!

There are a few places, including the previously mentioned section of Mark 10. James 1:19-27 is another great section. There's a lot of debate over what exactly Mark 10 means, if Jesus is talking about just the one man, but he goes on to talk about the rich in general, how their commitment to god is clouded by their earthly ties. The real proof, though, is in how Jesus and his closest followers lived: they gave up everything and followed him. What better example than the man himself?

You should really take some of your own advice shamelessbookworm, in fact I'd recommend not only reading the bible in it's entirety, but also heeding the words in Acts 8:30-31
"Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. "Do you understand what you are reading?" Philip asked.
How can I," he said, "unless someone explains it to me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him."
Leave us not forget John 12:8 regarding the poor, my good Judas wannabe.

First, John 12:8 seems to be a bit of an exception, doesn't it? Judas raised a valid point, and Jesus replied that the perfume was meant for his burial, like it was worked out before hand. It doesn't really change anything, IMHO.
And second, if no one can understand the scripture on their own, how is anyone supposed to trust what ANYONE says or thinks about scripture? If it is incomprehensible to man then it is irrelevant, because no real truth can be gleaned from it.

Ah, but are you giving priority to one verse over another? I'll refer you back to 2 Peter 1:20. If we give priority to one over another, rather than heeding the warning of Paul in Romans 9-11 on seeking a moralist view of scripture, we fall into error.
Second, the function of the Holy Spirit, the 3rd part of the trinity, deals with this issue, along with a properly established church. The word is clear, but education is necessary to deal with all the nuances within it's proclaimed truth.

We have been messing in that region killing people and supporting dictators since WWII.
Before us it was the British.
Islam is not about freedom, but neither is Christianity. They are both about rules.
As for poverty - take a look at Central & South America.
Poverty is caused by corruption, greed & exploitation. These things are not tied to any one religion.
