The wedding scene was hilarious. The look on David's face after the marriage - as if he had just overcome an obstacle. I do feel sorry for Mariel's mum - the poor woman was continually isolated from everyone. I do feel for Rhonda - she felt abandoned by someone who was supposed to be her best mate. However Mariel has her own life and if she was being a bit selfish - Rhonda was being a tad selfish too.
@ContrastY That manager/store detective always has to prove a point. She's the same one who ruined her cousin's, the Tanya's husband, wedding because Muriel took that dress she wore to it.
I'm in tears right now...right after they're married and they're hugging muriels dad and his GIRLFRIEND not WIFE....and Muriel's mom in the back just looks heartbroken...
okay i keep commenting on these but the husband is a fucking bastard!! I feel so sorry for the mum, he just leaves her and she deserves so much better and he should help her!!!
the mother represents the "what if" part of Muriel's life - what would happen to Murial if she stayed in her room listening to Abba tapes. It makes sense, therefore that physically and symbolically she's not in attendance at the wedding.
I really HATE that floor-walker at 6:35. She must have a personal bone to pick with the Heslops. At the film's beginning, she had Muriel arrested at the wedding instead of nabbing her at the store. Then she nails Mrs Heslop for stealing a pair of cheap shoes. I have known women such as her. They never did anything useful with their lives, except maybe marry someone who could support them, and are now working at a job like this to try and prove themselves.
@jrcasselman Same with Mystery Shoppers, I believed they had a personal bone to pick with me. In the end I had to resign due to my disgust to that 'Mystery Shopper' program before my reputation is destroyed.
The part with the mom at the wedding made me cry like crazy AND when the husband told here that he wanted a divorce! That poor woman, she didn't deserve any of this! My mother just passed away recently and I will never be able to see her again or talk to her or have her at my wedding and Muriel has a mother and doesn't appreciate at all! And don't even get me started on that sham of a funeral either! I don't think I can ever watch this movie again because of what they did to the mother :( :(
can muriels dad rub it in anymore..... slap in the face number 1 "im not coming back" slap in the face number 2 "i want a divorce" and if that isnt enough "im marrying deidre!" twat!
@jrcasselman I know even as a teenager me and my brothers and sisters got jobs and gave the money to our mom, because there was 8 of us, you would'nt see that happening today
@MyJustified This scene should serve as a warning to all young women. Get an education and a career, so you can support yourself should you become single for any reason.
It's understandable so many people hae Muriel, but when you think of her situation carefully, you should be able to sympathise. Her father's a moron who blames her when anything goes wrong. Her mother sees her as a failure. Her sister thinks nothing of her. Her so called "friends" described her as ugly, fat and stupid. No boy has ever showed any interest in her...
The treatment of the mum in this film breaks my heart every time I see it, she travelled all that way to see her daughter's big day only to be invisible. I dont blame Muriel though, she was caught up in her own fantasy and just didn't realise. Love this film.
the mum deserved so much more, i feel really sorry for her, and the dad walking out on her, and being ignored at the wedding, then she gets hit :( cut her a break!!!
Poor Bryce... I also feel sorry for Muriel's mum - the way she was ignored at the Church - so sad.. There was a moment where Muriel had become a little selfish but im glad she changed back towards the end.
muriels mother is beautiful in every way. she tried so hard to stand it all to the end. i don't blame her at all - i blame all the others. i can't stand the abuse in this film, i never could - not even when i was a child and saw this movie for the first time. the cruelty and selfishness disgusts me. it killed her mother, and nobody fucking cared. disgusting.
@TheCarlScharnberg Yeah specially when the little girl is chatting and laughing on the phone talking about boys when her mum has just died!!! It really shocked me too when I watched it when I was little. It always makes me cry and breaks my heart :-(
I feel so sorry for the mum, but it makes me frustrated that she just kinda lies back and takes it. Why doesn't she do something, claim some sort of life and happiness.
@jehusaphets98 - she did not snub them, Mariel's dream ever since is to get married and she was in seven heaven that's why she doesn't notice anything not even her MOM !
its a good way how they look at muriels life is like, its all rich and fine but when you look at the poor mum, she lives a sad and worthless life =( i could never do that to my mum. I cry at he fact that they treat her like a peace of shit on the pavement
yeah muriel's brothers and sisters make her do everything i could NEVER do that i know what it's like to help alot my mom works full time and my dad has a really bad back so i help ALOT seeing ppl being like that knowing that there are ppl like that in real life makes me fkn angry
Seriously, the poor mom...her story in this movie is so simply told but so heartbreaking. And I love the way everything gets mirrored...how Muriel turns into someone who neglects people in the same way she herself was neglected.
Muriel's a fucking bitch...She didn't deserve to be happy at the end..The mom deserved more than what she got from that piece of shit husband and stupid fucking kids...
@saagalo02 I think you're kind of missing the point! Muriel is a sad loser who has nothing going for her so she turns into an unpleasant person to escape from herself. It's not supposed to be a case of 'she's a bitch' 'she's the nice one' It's about how the characters have all affected each other. Look at the father she has grown up with x
@JustinTimberlakeTV1 You practically want to die when she passes by her mother, and the look on her face. Betty Heslop is easily one of the saddest characters in all of cinema.

Would someone who is shoplifting spend all that money on merchandise and then steal a cheap pair of shoes?
the store detective could have allowed Mom to purchase the shoes but she wanted to prove a point.
the dt could have tapped mom on the shoulder and said you forgot to pay for these.
security guards and little shop attendants believe they have a greater insight on human nature than professional psychiatrists!
catching someone in the act is more important than protecting the store's assets.
