OK, let me rephrase my critique. Chris Botti's talent is better represented by other works out there - other songs, some of them plain ol' covers nonetheless.
I have tried to make my critiques of Chris work specific to this song and what it represents (type-wise.) Jamming is OK, so is paying one's bills as long as one knows where one's muse is, the one that moves hearts and minds in the realm of critical acclaim. You are a musician, you can appreciate that.
TRUTH # 1: The enthusiasm displayed in this video is in inverse proportion to the musicianship or musical quotient woefully lacking in this tune.
TRUTH # 2: "Streets Ahead " is an irredeemably crappy tune - the kind that more savvy musicians jam on without committing to tape or recording it. Musical landfills are already bursting with this kind of mindless pap without Mr. Botti adding to them.
@gangstercorleone Nice try sounding smart, 'gangster'. FYI, YOUR type of music is clogging up mainstream media with mindless and ludicrous garbage that contributes to society's moral deterioration. And it shows too. Don't believe me? Look what happened to Lil' Wayne. Arrested for illegally possessing marijuana and guns. Isn't it true for all of your "brothers" in prison? You don't even have a f****** video!! Well, good luck in life :)
@anonymous1461 YOU don't know what my type of music is. Au contraire I know what this type of music the above video represents: mind numbing fusion pap, irreducibly retrograde and unoriginal. If you think this music is great, then follow the Pied Piper and see where that leads you.

@gangstercorleone Oh, and I almost forgot: how ironic when you call Kenny G (and in this case, Botti too) a dilettante, for you probably made your account just to rip on less-mainstream music in the safety and comfort of your basement. In public all of our 101 people who are in favor of jazz would tie you up and burn you at the stake, just like all of your "brothers" who are, in reality, demoralized martyrs with no intellectual pretensions whatsoever. So have a nice day.
@anonymous1461 You aren't for real. "Streets Ahead" is an up-tempo "Easy Listening/Soft Jazz" tune. What's "less mainstream" about that? And while on the subject, your characterization of this mindless pap as jazz without any qualifiers lumps you in with the other jazz dilettantes around here.
And last but by no means least, your insinuated affection with burning dissenters "at the stake" hints at how far from the tree branches you have come as a primate.
@gangstercorleone For the record, you never talked about what type of music YOU like, so you can't be given any credibility for your opinions (i.e. no proof). But, it is, and ONLY, your opinion, so it can't be seen as true anyway (so why should I care?). Plus, I don't think your even allowed to hate on this because you don't appreciate how much work this requires. Developing skills on the trumpet takes years, while making "insinuated affections" takes only minutes. Thus, GTFO.
@anonymous1461 Stop pussy-footin' around the subject now that your cant and sophistry has been exposed. Against all odds focus, please focus. In that connection here is a TASK that does not involve multi-step instructions ......
TASK: Explain to the peanut gallery here why this song and or video represents the apogee of horn playing, let alone compositional or improvisational artistry.
@gangstercorleone Are you really that stubborn? Fine: I might be contradicting myself, but this video does not explicitly represent the "apogee" of horn playing, but rather it is a work that intends to evoke a certain feeling in audiences: relaxation. Do you even know what "improvisational artistry" is? And are you saying that you alone can do better music than him? You never insinuated about your own musical abilities in the first place! You are being fallacious...why?
1. This song is to relaxation what a root canal with no anesthesia is to modern dentistry. The pairing of the bassline, sophomoric in the extreme, with the paint-by-numbers horn lines is a poor fit.
2. If I have to explain to you what "improvisational artistry" is then we started this whole thing backwards. Read up on what the soul of jazz is. (The be-boppers took it to its dizzying extreme.)
@gangstercorleone It's your opinion, and I'm fine with that. Although I must say that you have a big vocabulary, rather than having the characteristics that are paramount so as to labeling yourself as a "savant" in music. Honestly, I would prefer to finish this conversation on this note: I honor your opinion, but please be careful how you word it. You'll never know who's feelings you'll hurt...

@anonymous1461 - Again, please focus. My musical abilities or lack thereof have little to nothing do with this. I no more have to be a musical savant than I have to be Shakespeare to judge a general work of literature.
@TheLeoOfCostaRica Hate to break it to you Memsahib. Your horn-blowing hero who is pushing 50 right now is about to end up like Kenny G - the "jazz" dilettante poster boy whose 50-cent CD's are now clogging every jazz aisle because nobody wants to buy 'em. Why, because his so-called smooth jazz gives people the runs on short order.
You want plastic? Kenny's got plastic. So does your hero (Mr. Chris Botti) here.
Horn-blowing hero? You're such an asshole that it's becoming cartoonish.
There's a big difference between a comment praising a jazz musician and a comment meant to call a douchebag like you on his pretentious bullshit.

I guess I have to put it to you all like this, imagine some really good bass players playing "Portrait Of Tracy" or "Continuum." Victor Bailey does an amazing version of the latter, but it's still not as good as Jaco's version. Hope that makes sense.
@DragonSyndicate1 The bridge, I'm just not feeling it. Sorry fellas, but to ME, it just doesn't have that same groove that Jimmy Johnson has on the original. Hey, it's a matter of opinion that's all. Now, I understand that "live" is generally different from studio, but this is lacking, again to me. We all hear differently. And that's OK!
