  • The show must go on!

  • Okay, something makes me get the feeling that the lift always causes a problem for each Elphaba

  • @supersonicgirl15 i know right?? if it's not that elphaba nearly falls off the lift, then it's that the lift doesnt go up, or else!! hahaha

  • goddamn, idina gives me chills when she sings<3

  • I seriously Love Idina and Kristen together performing Wicked. They both brought their all to the table. I know Idina has Asthma, but another reason for shortness of breath is how much power she puts into her voice. I mean if you tried doing that too you'd have shortness of breath too

  • I love how she like, yells "EVERY ONE DESERVES A CHANCE TO FLY! Right is she starts to go up! :)

  • @yvanelicia123 Haha ikr! :D

  • The camera goes up and he moves it around like 'where the hell did she go!?' Lol

  • The Show must go on!

  • The glory of the stage, you get to do it all over again the next night. I'm just disappointed they cut her "me" short. Idina is amazing -3

  • Kristens wig looks like she is homeless.....just sayin'

  • i saw this musical in october with my cousin i cryed at this song because its my theme song

  • @Claryonlyme eu também. Apesar de eu amar o original, esse tbm ficou ótimo!!!

  • O bom é que deu um suspense... tipo, "oh meu Deus, o que será que ela vai fazer??"

  • I like her a lot.

  • Who cares if it came up late. She did the professional thing which was to keep on going. It would of been bad if she would of stopped the whole show.

  • with her taking deep breaths, why don't people think of the fact of how much she's wonderfully belting out the notes because that drains your breath in about 5 seconds if you're going full blast. She's obviously a professional and can sing longer than that, but she's human too

  • It actually kind of worked because it began to lift right as she said "everyone deserves a chance to FLY!"

    =P

  • i love how she makes up for it by belting the shit out of the song even more. lov eher

  • it didnt go up that late. you cant even really tell when it actually went up. because the video is too zoomed in. but we can see that it did not go up when it should have. wow super cool video...

  • @imaplate1 No, it definatley went up late, you could tell at 0:53

  • live theatre is fantastic u never know what will happen with efffects etc, been doing it for years and something always goes wrong, Idnia does what we all do, keep going unless it goes horribly wrong!!! like the house in sunset blvd, now thta was a nightmare to work with!!!

  • love her the most because her voice fits the character

  • Wow she really was late in lifting! Have to say that the first and only time I saw this play I loved it! When this song was sung I felt my spirit soar along with Elphaba and I wanted to sing it with her!

  • umm guys.. you try singing this without breathing funny. Its bloody hard!

  • I just love the way she just carries on. I know a lot of performers who would stop and go 'can someone sort out the lift?' Haha!

  • @MATTY0MOO if they stopped in a show like that they would probably be fired... they are professionals. No matter what happens just keep going.

  • @elphbwckd They wouldn't get fired! Patti LuPone stopped Gypsy!

  • @macrent2 well... shes Patti LuPone... and she stopped it because someone was taking illegal pictures not because of a set malfunction. Very different scenarios. If the set malfunctions you carry on like its normal so not to ruin the experience for the audience who in most cases wouldn't notice the difference.

  • @elphbwckd Yeah and also Patti LuPone is such a big star. And it was like the last or second to last day before closing the show. (My friend was at that performacne lol!)

  • You know what, it almost doesn't even need the lift, her voice is just that powerful

  • see, regardless of the lift going up late, Iidna's performance is epic, and that's all there is to it. She's awesome, Kristin's awesome, and these things happen ^.^

  • @ForeverWicked01 *Idina -.- really should spell her beautiful name right >.<

  • yu people are ridiculous. Sure she probably does have asthma but Alot of people have asthma! its not rare! You people act like shes the first one to have it! Wlel not literally but still.

  • pretty damn good performance for a malfunction xD

  • Poor Idina. :)

  • She stays in character so well! She's amazing!

  • Comment removed

  • when was it supposed to go up?

  • @TheBlueberries96 As she's saying "It's meeeeee" I believe at like 0:43 ish

  • i thought the breaths added drama to what she was saying

  • she has asthma?!? i just figured the breaths were litteral ones that anybody would need, she could've been exausted for all we know, but that explains some stuff...nevertheless, Idina is still an AMAZING Elphaba!!!! <3

  • @ValtronW - I completely agree. If the lift is going to go up late, this is a PERFECT place for it to start to take flight. It almost makes me think they should do it like this all the time...because throughout the whole show everyone, including Elphaba, is second guessing her powers....

  • @dlsheahan4 But they have to do it at the ITS MMMEEEEEEEE because thats when the guards are holding Glinda and trying to get Elphie

  • It actually kind of works. "Everyone deserves a chance to FLY!" *flies*

  • @ValtronW agreed!! It was late, but perfectly retimed. But on the bright side there's a sensor of some type that won't let the lift go up should Idina(or any other Elphaba) not be locked into it. It is unfortunate that stuff happens late, but in this scene, it's better late and safe than on time and accident.

  • Rachel seems better than her

  • they rule oz!!!

  • I haven't even seen the Wicked musical, and still I love Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth the best! Those two rock! :D

  • Rachel tucker way better and she is the first London elpheba x

  • @denk005 Eh, She wasn't the first london Elphaba, and no, she's not as good as Idina.

  • @denk005 Rachel wasn't the original. The original was idina menzel, then kerry ellis took over a few months later then kerry ellis and alexia khadime alternated. They took like a year each for like a period of 3 - 4 years x

  • @denk005 Actually Idina was the original London Elphaba, then Kerry Ellis took over then Alexia Khadime and then Rachel Tucker. So no, Rachel is not the original London Elphaba, she's the fourth.

  • OK. Idina doesnt have the best voice, BUT she is the best damn acting elphaba...you show me any other Elphaba that acts as good as she does! She is still the ORIZGINAL Elphaba. and in my opinion she will always be the ONLY elphaba!

  • @1018bandgeek racheal tucker tops her in everything!!!

  • @1018bandgeek go to see willemijn in the netherlands in december. she acts elphaba soooooo good *-* better than idina ;)

  • I feel really sorry for Idina it must have been embarrising but she carried on like a true professional and the lift eventually went up love you Idina <3333 and I love Wicked too <33333

  • At least she kept going with the show.

  • It doesn't sound like Kristin at all. Idina's voice was brighter before she did Wicked, the show damages your voice and most likely causes nodes, a lot of the women who play the show's voices change. The extreme is Eden Espinosa if you listen to her as Idina's standby compared to her last run.

  • @omglolwhatever and yet, there is a certain actress playing Elphaba mostly non-stop since 2007 :) And the production nearest to me (ok, there was/is one closer, but that was in another language) is very lucky in getting her, premiere this fall :) If they weren't so darn expensive and it wasn't several hours away where I rely on someone to take me or public transport, I'd have tickets for multiple shows booked already :)

  • It went up at a pretty good time lol

  • "as someone told me lately everyone fly" oh look she's flying!

  • As they say, "the show must go on" Love you, Idina!! :)

  • @pilchard96 because of all your speculation, innuendo, outuendo, (:D) let's settle this... for good: while yes, it IS plausible for a recording to be mixed into a live production the fact is: it's rarely ever used and most definitely does not exist in any production of Wicked - if you don't believe me check out one of the DG videos where her hat and mic falls off - you can't hear her for about 5 seconds until her backup mic is brought up :P

  • Personally, I think the difference in her singing was due to her asthma and I think she was trying not to laugh. It had to be kinda funny to sing about defying gravity while you're on the ground.

  • u could see her smiling as she finally lifted up......u NEVER fail us, idina!!! WE LOVE U!!!

  • HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD!!!! POOR IDINA!!!!!!! MADE ME ALMOST FALL OUT OF MY CHAIR!!! this is probably along the lines of what she wuz thinking-what the heck? why am i not giong up...?? i have to keep singing and act normal! oh, this thing must not be locked in....oh! ok! there it goes! nevermind! heres what kristen wuz thinking- ummmmm? hello? uhh, shes not giong up! ummmmm...anybody? oh uhhh ok! there it goes never mind!;) she sang beautifully though...and she hid it REALLY well!

  • @evilskunk12 haha agree

  • why is everyone slagging her off? she sings well here. I know on some occasions she doesn't but this is a REALLY difficult song. I applaud her :] anyway back to the real point of this video... how gutted would you be if Defying Gravity went wrong and you were watching it?! I'd be like NOOO! then I'd be like POOR ACTORS!!!!! It's a circle of no's.....

  • I like her anyway :D

  • @yoodlehoo She does not have asthma.... I'm part of her official fanclub, plus I've met her twice and have seen her live during her solo concerts twice....

At least I don't believe she does....

  • ok. look people..

NO ONE IS PERFECT. we make mistakes. Why are some poeple being so harsh on her. She's allowed to make one or two mistakes. She's human.

  • The lift she was on, if she's not safely in the lift it will not move. It's a safety precaution that was taken when designing it.

  • She's an amazing performer! I DON'T have asthma and I am a pretty good (or so I've been told) singer and I struggle to get to some of the notes in this song! It's really embarrassing as a performer when something goes wrong on stage though and she did well to just carry on as she did!

  • Ok, I'm sick of people saying "Plus, she has asthma" or words to that effect, so here you go:

Idina has asthma. She is an actress. She is performing live. There's smoke all around her. Mistakes were made in the operation of the lift. She carried on with the show. She did an amazing job.

    The end.

  • U never fail 2 wow us, Idina!

  • @yoodlehoo Umm ... how was I 'criticising peoples of youtube' ... ?

  • It was elphabas fault. Because the lift wont go up unless she has her back pressed against the machine enough.

  • people need to realize that theyre rushing around, not really taking any breaks while they dance around and sing.when i saw wicked, the actress who played galinda took big breaths during popular because she was tired and jumping around.these people are so amazing at what they do.

  • to those complaining about her singing i remind you she is a 2-time nominee for best actress in a musical, nominated in 1996 for rent and then winning for wicked. why don't you whinners try out for a touring company if you can do it better.

  • Funny thing is, I've watched this video several times and I can't even notice when she goes up. I had to look at the comments to see exactly when she does. I guess it's the way it was filmed so close to her face that I can't see her "rising."

  • for anyone complaing about her taking breaths while singing this song... seriously you try singing this song the right way then tell me how easy it is... Idina does a wonderful job!

  • @instantstar21 I agree, it's so difficult to sing ... not to mention the amount of smoke and stuff floating around her. Idina's amazing!!

  • she was probably thinking- "what the heck? dude, im not flying! i swear, sometimes this is just not worth the money! oh, hi kristen! well, gotta keep goin! oh! okey! there it goes! weee! well, im gonna kill that guy.

  • "Everyone deserves a chance to fly"

    Lift goes up

Pretty good timing even though it came up late.

  • @TheJazluvsu Haha, yeah, it worked out pretty well, didn't it? Lovely.

  • Comment removed

  • Her voice problem (though I don't think she has a prblem) was probably along the lines of "holy crap...I'm supposed to be going up...why aren't I flying?...just keep singing, go with it...OH! there it goes! wow...so gonna kill the lift guy when I get down..."

  • @Bremen25 It's all computer controlled. If she's not locked in, she doesn't go up.

  • ooooooops xD hahahahaha!!! (Y)

  • It was late because the thing that lifts her up was not safe, as in she was not secured and LOCKED safely in. not a big deal

  • Is it me or do the lines 'so if you care to find me/look to the western sky' sound like they were sang by Kristin and not Idina?

  • I love how she riffed on 'everyone deserves the chance to fly' just as it was going up!

  • To all those commenting about the breathing:

This is a stag show. This is not a song on a CD, this is a musical. Part of the heavy breathing is because she has to hit the high notes, yes, but I would imagine a good deal of it is acting. She's distressed and out of breath in this scene. It fits.

  • @InsertNameHere803 plus she has asthma

  • Idina is just amazing! She got up there in the end. If you hadn't seen the show before then you wouldn't have known any different.

  • After seeing how they make elphaba defy gravity then I can safely say she probally was't in securely so it didnt let the lift go up.

  • @newe6000 *the computer that controlls the lift.

  • She did an amazing job by continuing even though the lift was late

  • Chills chills chills, she's phenomenal!

  • she has some awsome powerful lungs for someone with asthma! Wow, hats (and brooms =]) off to the woman! Bravo!!

  • u should hav marked when she did go up because i can't really tell.

  • @Red41658 she goes up when she says everyone deserves the chance to fly" on the word "fly" the lift started going up. :)

  • @misterlajay oh thanx.

  • Nothing like the orginal :) Idina,Rachel, and Vicki are my favorites. Lovely women all.

  • you in her mind see was laughing about that

  • idina menzel is amazing. fuck you. cunt.

  • And that's why the tech crew has to really be on their toes. But that just shows how professional an actor is. A huge screw up and she never broke character.

  • she has asthma? i swear i never knew tht!!!

wow, doesnt matter, SHES AMAZING!!!! SHES THE BEST ELPHABA THERE EVER WAS

I LOVE WICKED SOOOO MUCH I CRIED WEN I GOT THE TICKETS.. :P

  • she has asthma? i swear i never knew tht!!!

wow, doesnt matter, SHES AMAZING!!!! SHES THE BEST ELPHA THERE EVER WAS

I LOVE WICKED SOOOO MUCH I CRIED WEN I GOT THE TICKETS.. :P

  • love wikid :D feel reli sorry 4 idina must av been 'ard havin ashtma

  • lol

  • Guys, who gives a fuck if she's breathing heavily or why? Just enjoy the music.

  • Jeez, how can anyone watch and/or listen to this and throw in a lame comment about her breathing? She's amazing in every aspect. Just wow!

  • She is taking deep breaths because those are huge notes she has to be able to hit well...it takes a lot of oxygen to be able to hold out those notes..thats kinda the purpose why singers take deep breaths before their biggest note.

  • Idina is taking deep breaths because she has asthma...

  • For everyone complaining that she takes deep breaths or whatever, I'd like to see you do a show eight times a week, belting your ass off in every number you sing and still have plenty of air left. You act like it's such a horrible thing that an actress is out of breath! She's phenomenal and that's that.

  • btw Idina is supposed to be taking deep fast breaths because she's scared and trembling

  • Idina also had to hold "It's meeeeeee" very long, so that could be the cause of her "big breaths". She probly didnt know why the lift didnt go up.... poor dee!

  • and for those saying that they use backing tracks in a live production: SO untrue, and impossible! The orchestra can't change from the live tempo to that of the recording, and actors can't keep identical tempo for every show. Also, they couldn't have every word recorded 'in case of emergency' and to the person who said they do, the stage manager would call it, not the crew - and its up to the actors to keep the show going, not the backstage crew (even though they are just as important)

  • @nextowicked THANK YOU! I've gotten into so many SILLY arguments on here over this kind of stuff. THANK YOU!!!!

  • @nextowicked _IF_ this part is recorded, then it would only be those lines, in case of an accident like this.

And on the tempo change subject, lines in Wicked are pre-recorded - the melting scream and Boq's speech after transformation in WWOTE, but most importantly in NOMTW. The Wizard isn't actually on stage dancing, it's the male dance captain, the Wizards voice is pre-recorded and can be matched tempo wise, although I do understand the MD tries to stick to the tempo. With all the modern...

  • @pilchard96 ...technology in theatre nowadays, I wouldn't be suprised if "so if you.." is prerecorded just for emergencies, like this, giving time for the actress to clip herself into the lift, without the break in vocals pushing on the lock switch inside the lift would cause. Idina probably did sing those lines, but the mixing desk turned her mic down and mixed in the pre-recorded line. There does seem to be a difference in the timbre.

BUT this is only my speculation!

  • I'm so sorry for not being able to restrain myself, but after reading most of the comments here:

It IS Idina singing, listen to her other DG's on youtube, it is high, but you can tell it's her.

@Imapirate16 Most sound designers, and it's safe to assume in WICKED as well incorporate Foldback speakers, aimed at the stage, so the actors can hear themselves, others and the pit

  • she did a great job adjusting for the late lift!

  • lol that sucks

  • Comment removed

  • When did it finally go up?

  • @Simplysims001 around 1:00 i think

  • You can't not love her ♥

  • @ATHINAmeow yes you can.

  • im not partcuarly a fan of idina in wicked (i loved her in rent). But i loved her "everyone deserves a chance to fly" :)

  • @SingJiya. Oh and there's no need for you to post your mic handling lecture on EVERY Wicked YouTube video.

  • Thanks. I was hoping someone else would agree and back me up. You'd think if you're a true fan of a celebrity, you'd know how to spell his or her name.

  • I love how she puts an emphasis on the word "fly". haha. fly lift, fly!!!!

  • at least they timed the lift at a good time

  • Ugh. People please stop getting her name wrong. It is not India, Indina, or Inida. Duh!!!

  • @Holychickendinner actually it is indina

  • @AugustaJane It's Idina, you retard.

  • @AugustaJane No it's Idina.

  • @Holychickendinner Yes thank you for saying that. I mean, honestly? Her name isn't friggin "India". And I don't have anything against India or Indians, it's just that people should get her name right.

  • Ohhh poor India.... oh god. What an amazing actress to keep her self in character. :)

  • You know I love that song and I don't think that she did a bad job at singing, and in the theatere what she did we call improv. acting so who ever didn't like her prefomance how about you get the guts to go on that lift and almost fall out!

  • So well covered idina! :)

Aha anyone else think kristins little "uh" when she tries to get away from the guards sounds really cute :') ah I love chenooo :)

  • Wow she did so many riffs! She used 3!

  • Hahahaha "How I'm Going to Eventually Defy Gravity" - epic name!!!!!!!!!

  • That's hilarious! I wonder if she was trying to keep herself from puking or from giggling.

  • Should have renamed the song at this point "How I'm going to eventually defy gravity" lol

  • @charmingone25 LOL i love that!! and i agree with ya on the renaming it. XD

  • mistake with the lift.. but one of her best vocal performances of defying gravity :)

  • @UnleashTheVoice I've discovered that the mistakes made onstage tend to bring out the best in the actors performing. You should listen to the audio of Kerry Ellis' lift accident. Probably her best DG performance ever. It must the the adrenaline rush they get when they think to themselves, "Oh, I really hope the audience didn't notice that!" or, "Well, now I've got to make up for SOMETHING!"

  • if you had never seen wicked before you probably wouldnt really notice anything...

indina was probably going wtf hurry up and go up you stupid thing :P

  • @thekimmydoo idina wasnt actually in the lift yet when it was suppose to go up. you can see at 0:42 she is waiting to get into it. dont know what was going on but something was preventing her from getting into the lift when suppose to. Its amazing that she was still able to sing her cues when trying to get into the the lift and make it rise.

  • @thekimmydoo I thought she looked like she was turning around, like she was waiting for it to go

  • Show must go on...

  • i was there at that show! dude... i dont care what anyone she was amazing. and i didnt even notice the late lift until i went and saw i again xD

  • wow, even tho the lift being late stinks, her performance is unbelievable <3 one of her best

  • Asthma shouldn't affect you're singing if you keep it under control. I have asthma but my singing is fine. I agree with SMSProductions1. Her resonance is fine but its a big song and the context for the character is supposed to be intense which is where the breathing is coming from. If her asthma was that bad she wouldn't be singing like that, so I highly doubt it has anything to do with it.

  • @sammiclaire88 Yeah, that may be true but have you ever even tried to sing this song? It is hard. And I see why she is having to breath so hard, and asthma could have an effect on it. And she is singing like that because she is epic and again, it is a REALLY hard song to sing.

  • @EmilyaChild singing this song isnt difficult. whats difficult is being able to project your voice to fill the big ass theater. even with the microphone, im sure in the studio and other small places she had no problem because she didnt have to make sure someone 100ft away from her could hear her singing. but she's still amazing :)

  • @VampireB1tch101 This song actually is quite difficult to sing, let alone singing it 8 times a week. And from doing lots of musical theatre I found out you don't project any more than normal. That's what the sound techs are there for. Especially in a big theatre where the sound is absorbed by everyone. That's just asking to blow out your voice. But yes she is still quite good no matter what :P

  • @EmilyaChild Yes, I can sing this song, even with asthma. Like I said, if it's kept under control, it shouldn't be an issue.

  • Comment removed

  • "To those who ground me" learn to lift me on cue >:T

    lmao XD

  • I love how the late lift hardly phazed her at all... Though yes she did seem a little rushed afterward...

  • i love how kristen helps her!

  • @LMorrisonOfficial what did she do? its hard to tell cus the screen goes black

  • @LMorrisonOfficial its not actually Kristin, its the backing track they always have ready incase of an accident. for example, for this, she does not get into the lift in time, the backstage crew realise, and put the backing track on for "and so if you care to find me, look to the western sky". this is because to get into the lift, the actress has to push her back onto a lever, so she is secure, and the lift can go up. this would create a crack in her voice, so they put on the backing track :)

  • @pilchard96 HAHAHAH SO NOT TRUE ...... HAHAHAHAHAH You apparently are not familiar with the wicked trading world.. NO RECORDINGS are made in wicked for "back tracking" in case ANYTHING!!! I guarantee none of this show was PRERECORDED! Your stupid!
